To say that I have finally experienced the dreaded arse daggers?!

You tried to warn me, MN, but in all my nearly 40 years, I have never felt anything like it. To quote Supt. Hastings "Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey!"

Was trying to supervise 20 children and thought I would scream or fall down and actually writhe on the floor. I did feel like I was being stabbed, so at least the name is right.

Honestly, I almost asked a coworker to cover for me, but I thought she would laugh if I said I was dying and my bum hurt.

Then, 10 of the longest minutes of my life later and they just stopped. What the hell?! Will they come back every time I have a period? Why now at almost 40?

I have so many questions and the internet is not helping.

Give me your worst arse dagger stories...

My DH has had it a couple of times and said “ I reckon I had that barge pole arse thing you get.” GrinGrinGrin

Is this the medical term?

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 08/06/2021 21:55

Literally thought l was the only person in the world that had this excruciating pain until l joined MN!!
Thankfully have gone through menopause now so these are a distant memory.

diamondpony80 · 08/06/2021 21:57

Never heard of the term but I’ve had the experience. For me it’s endometriosis. I don’t get the symptoms very often though as take the pill back to back so that I don’t get a period. Probably not the best thing to do but it works.

tttigress · 08/06/2021 21:58

It doesn't really feel like stabbing to me more of a spasm.

I have also heard magnesium is a cure/preventative.

whatsthecraic91 · 08/06/2021 22:00

I get javelin arse every god damn month. 😩

Meaty226 · 08/06/2021 22:01

@VestaTilley

YANBU, OP. I’ve not had it but it sounds horrific; you have my sympathy. Like so many women’s conditions it’s just so overlooked by doctors.

I’ve seen threads on here on “javelin arse”, that may give you more info/support! Good luck.

Yes, when some women become GPs maybe the medical profession will understand...............

Thinking about it, all my GPs for the last 20 years have been women. I think some MAY have entered the profession - more than a few. Mine have listened when I have been to them over the years. None have told me that I'm a stupid woman making things up and should go back to my kitchen.

So I'm not sure what point you are trying to make about sexism. Other than trying to make something up for clicks and lolz - which I understand is a huge industry these days

StarCourt · 08/06/2021 22:02

I used to get this every time I had sit period. DD12 also gets it

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 08/06/2021 22:02

In men, anyway, it usually seems to go along with constipation, so treating that is what I usually try first.

I only ever get it at night when it wakes me up. I always assumed it was trapped wind caused by slight constipation caused by slight dehydration because farting or drinking water helped!

MissDollyMix · 08/06/2021 22:02

Omg! I thought it was just me! I’m slightly relieved to know that other people have this too! It’s so painful! I have to stop whatever I’m doing and take deep breaths until it passes. Much like labour pains. But actually worse. So much worse!

ghostyslovesheets · 08/06/2021 22:04

I see your anal cramps and raise you Levator ani syndrome - I have this and a laugh at your javelin arses !

Seriously though - bum daggers do hurt

eekbumbler · 08/06/2021 22:05

Ah... I've had it for years - since a teen! I always called it broom handle arse of javelin bum... Not just me then.

Well ridden out OP!

99redspottedducks · 08/06/2021 22:07

Finding this thread is the strangest thing. Yesterday I was 10 days post c section recovery amazing and then...this pain! Oh my god
Being cut open was a breeze compared. I thought it was trapped wind, I was pretty much screaming in pain yesterday. It's eased now
It's nice to know I'm not alone
Absolutely horrific

Phoenix76 · 08/06/2021 22:14

Blimey, another one who thought it was just me! During an episode (always at night, wakes me up with a start) I think “right that’s it, something is seriously wrong here, I need to speak with my gp” but as soon as it’s gone (about 20 minutes of sheer hell) I change my mind.

I had lightning crotch when I was pregnant so thought maybe it was a weird after shock thing that my body thought would be great to try out for old time’s sake. I understand now that it’s just “one of those things” but I’d love to know why our bodies do this, it really is an unbelievable pain and when it gets you it really does feel like something is seriously wrong.

TIVI · 08/06/2021 22:14

i think you mean cramp in your anus? it has an actual name but can't remember it .

Summerfun54321 · 08/06/2021 22:14

I assumed everyone gets it 😂 my mum’s a midwife and said it’s because the nerves are connected so ovulation pain can result in arse pain. She said it was totally normal to me as a teenager but I’ve never thought to ask around to see if others get it! If it happens at work I just say I have intense heartburn to explain the eye watering and body clenching. God it’s painful! Hilarious people have named the phenomenon, I’ve just called it period pain, how boring 😂

TatianaBis · 08/06/2021 22:15

What in the world are people talking about?

ittakes2 · 08/06/2021 22:17

Thank you for sharing - I also thought it was just me.

FuckyouCovid21 · 08/06/2021 22:17

@TatianaBis

What in the world are people talking about?
Erm, maybe read the thread?
Grassynoel · 08/06/2021 22:19

It's not just me! Relief! Been happening to me a couple of years now. Wakes me up at night. Horrendous. I haven't linked it to hormones or my cycle (peri now), must keep track.

Interesting to read Buscopan works for some, gonna get some and keep it on the bedside locker.

TatianaBis · 08/06/2021 22:21

@FuckyouCovid21

Genius. That never occurred to me.

Still don’t get it.

eekbumbler · 08/06/2021 22:21

@TIVI

I'm not sure it's just a cramp in your anus.

As I teen I labelled it broom handle arse because that to me was what it felt like - someone sticking a broom handle up my arse. At that age I'd had no experience of messing around sexually.

It renders you immobile and if in public the pain can only be seen in your eyes.

RightOnTheEdge · 08/06/2021 22:22

I always thought arse daggers were trapped wind because going to the toilet always helped me.
Mine seem pretty random and there's ages in between so I will have completely forgotten about them and then suddenly out of the blue one day BAM! Daggers up my bum!
It's so hard when people are there and your trying to act normal! I have never talked about this to anyone or heard anyone talk about them so it was a big eye opener to find out on MN that they were "a thing"

paisley256 · 08/06/2021 22:23

I've had it about 5 times and find Buscopan for IBS is a godsend. Mine often happens as sex ends....?? Like if I've come too hard my bum goes into spasm. Great fun.

Whyemseeaye · 08/06/2021 22:24

I hate them!!! I experienced a sudden attack while driving on the A1, I thought I would crash the car. Honestly longest 10 minutes of my life Confused
