To ask you to tell me what's good in lidl?

For the first time in about 2ish years (mostly due to the pandemic and shielding) I am going to be near a lidl tomorrow for an appointment and I'm already looking forward to a cookie and a warm cheese straw from the bakery 🤤

As its been so long I am wondering if there are any special secret items that I should get to try? Open to food, cleaning and other items as its been so long since I was there. I remenber the wash liquid was always a decent price and the butter ring biscuits were always melt in the mouth as they were my dad's faves.

I'm disappointed with our local supermarket deliveries (Asda and Sainsbury's, haven't been able to book a Tesco slot since feb) and paying more for less and less (and increasingly poor quality /poor dates) so ready for a change.

Thank you

The croissants are nice and cheap. The sort of mini pizza are nice in a dirty, doughy way. Both from self serve bakery. Crusti Croc sour cream and onion snacks. Cavolo Nero.

@queenMab99

The ground coffee, columbian 500g bag £3.29, is the nicest coffee ever! Jam, nuts, half side of salmon, and the low GI bread from the bakery, to list a few.
Those low GI bread rolls are amazing too.
PawsQueen · 07/06/2021 22:39

@Inthesameboatatmo all of it? I mean I can't say I've ever had the tinned tomatoes, cheese, crisps, peanut butter, biscuits, yoghurts... ALL go off the next day Hmm
That's like saying all of Waitrose food is incredible and lasts months

Inthesameboatatmo · 07/06/2021 23:01

@PawsQueen.
The fresh stuff is absolute shit , so no I wouldn't try the rest of it . Why waste money on shit tasting food

PawsQueen · 07/06/2021 23:03

Can't say I agree. The only thing I don't really like is the bags of salad but apples, bananas, cheese, meat etc all really good quality
The Aldi locally to me is awful so maybe it depends on the store? My local Lidl is brand new

SpamIAm · 07/06/2021 23:07

In British week a lot of the stuff was inedible

It's never occurred to me that Lidl in other countries has a British week. What do they stock??

Rubyrecka · 07/06/2021 23:08

@HoldingTheDoor

The brownies they sell in the bakery are amazing.
This. I'm sure they line them with crack they are so good!!

From memory from the last one I think it was in March: Cheddar (although last time it was Irish cheddar laced with whiskey, grim!) Fish and chips Blackcurrant cordial Cheese flavoured crackers Cheddar and Guinness bites (never again, just why?) Roast beef Lemon curd A pudding, I think it was supposed to be treacle tart Toffees

I’m sure there were sweets, biscuits and jams too. Alas no marmalade though.

warmandtoasty2day · 07/06/2021 23:28

i bloody love lidls Wink it seems the vast majority on here are lidl fans, i've met my tribe, sigh.

catfunk · 07/06/2021 23:35

Their berocca rip off in green and red tube is great!!

Newestname001 · 08/06/2021 00:16

Their fresh baked all butter plain croissants taste amazing - flaky and buttery and very slightly sweet. So much better than the ones in some other supermarkets - including M&S, which often just taste greasy. Pretty much anything on the fresh bake counter actually.

Also their Cien SOS concentrated hand cream is a saviour for my super dry hands (made worse by sanitizer) is excellent and cheaper than, for example, Norwegian formula in Superdrug. I'm sure there's loads - and I'm saving this thread for my next visit. 🌹

OldTinHat · 08/06/2021 08:52

I bought a fab shower curtain from the middle of Lidl last week - £4.99!

BigusBumus · 08/06/2021 09:09

Word of warning though, the fajita box kits are nothing like Old El Paso and taste grim.

Sometimesonly · 08/06/2021 09:36

Alas no marmalade though.
We had marmalade! It was quite nice.

Sometimesonly · 08/06/2021 09:41

New one half a mile from me due to open very soon 😀

Most of Lidl's goods are either great quality, well-priced, or - usually - both. But the far bigger problem is actually trying to shop there. My local branch (NW England, near Manchester) frequently has rows of empty shelves, and the weekly "Middle of Lidl" stuff is often not delivered at all. See the pic for what greeted shoppers on Friday morning last week. It really isn't possible to shop there sometimes.

When you complain you either get lots of platitudes or an earful of abuse from the floor staff who've had enough of it themselves, but ultimately no fucker at Lidl actually does anything. That includes you, Christian Härtnagel, supposedly in charge of this shower.

To ask you to tell me what's good in lidl?
Cottonheadedninymuggins · 08/06/2021 14:44

Fabulous thank you! My appointment has been moved to tomorrow now but at an even earlier time so even better for getting into lidl after clutching my extended shopping list 🤣Craving the cheese straw so much, you watch there not be any out 🤣

Gah not good at all 😞 have you emailed customer service? I notice there's a few pages on the website saying things are either delayed or may or may not be in dependant on store locality for the middle of lidl bits

Personally I much prefer Aldi, but Lidl is good for:

Brie
Bread
Potato Salad
Wine
Shower gel and toiletries
Pasta - real Italian stuff

I don't rate their fruit and veg.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 08/06/2021 14:57

Their Lupak dupe is better than Lurpak

HareofEasttown · 08/06/2021 19:59

I live in between two, both new, Lidl stores. Although both are clean as they're brand new, I've really noticed how different they are.

One branch never has spreadable butter, while the other branch never has toddler wipes.

It's shown me how much discrepancy there must be between stores. So those saying they hate Lidl must have crappy stores, and those who love it have good ones.

After reading this thread I'm going to one of my local Lidls tomorrow to buy a brownie!

SweetLidlLies · 08/06/2021 20:53

@Cottonheadedninymuggins

Those fucking useless people up in Scotland? I have been phoning them two or three times a month for about two years. I get told things like "When it's gone it's gone" - Lidl's strapline for the weekly promotions - and "they must have sold out by the time you got there." It's lies and bullshit: items have not sold out within five minutes of a store's opening on the very first day of a week-long promotion. Especially not when the shop staff openly tell me that the advertised stuff simply has not been sent from the warehouse.

I've also had staff in-store tell me that it's "because of the Suez Canal - because Lidl buy things in Euros it comes from abroad which is why we have lower prices".

Fucking milk does not come through the Suez Canal. It's out of stock in your brand new giant supermarket on the Wigan/Bolton/Salford border because you do not know what you're doing or because you don't care. Same with bread, and ketchup, and baked beans, which have been out of stock for weeks at a time since you opened in mid-February. Stop treating intelligent people like idiots.

The shop floor staff have had enough. They talk about quitting in front of customers. Customer Services is just a line of defence in the denial strategy. Härtnagel doesn't give a shit or is also in denial, or both. The RD doesn't want to know, actively bends over backwards to avoid having to deal with the customers who pay his (enormous) salary. The Area Manager is utterly impotent.

I listed a few things upthread but forgot to mention, they do a copy of the Aussie shampoo & conditioner. Works wonders for my hair and its £1 a bottle!

Crazycatlady007 · 08/06/2021 21:01

Wasabi ice-cream! Smile
