To ask you to tell me what's good in lidl?

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 07/06/2021 16:28

For the first time in about 2ish years (mostly due to the pandemic and shielding) I am going to be near a lidl tomorrow for an appointment and I'm already looking forward to a cookie and a warm cheese straw from the bakery 🤤

As its been so long I am wondering if there are any special secret items that I should get to try? Open to food, cleaning and other items as its been so long since I was there. I remenber the wash liquid was always a decent price and the butter ring biscuits were always melt in the mouth as they were my dad's faves.

I'm disappointed with our local supermarket deliveries (Asda and Sainsbury's, haven't been able to book a Tesco slot since feb) and paying more for less and less (and increasingly poor quality /poor dates) so ready for a change.

Thank you

The lemon drizzle cake it’s to die for!

My son walked in on my doing it once and blackmailed me into giving him a lift into town or he would tell!

Love Lidl!

inmyslippers · 07/06/2021 19:05

The indoor plants are a bargain. Children's and adults gummy vitamins are great value compared to brand names ones.

Thomasina79 · 07/06/2021 19:15

The tiger bread and the chocolate brownies are lovely. The fish is good and cheaper than Sainsbury. I’ve also discovered some sliced potatoes in a cheesy sauce, in a vacuum pack, so lasts for a while In The fridge. Brilliant as a topping for quick meals and I think only around a pound.

Can anyone recommend a good red wine?

LadyJaye · 07/06/2021 19:27

Their full fat Greek yoghurt (I don't believe in reduced fat yoghurt, go big or go home) is absolutely the best I've ever tasted.

As a proper 'wine snob' - used to work in the industry, proud holder of the WSET Advanced Diploma - their European wine list is genuinely superb and probably the best of all the supermarkets: certainly the best value for money, especially the Picpoul de Pinet and the Cremant de Loire.

The only criticism I have (and this may be a local thing) is the fruit and veg doesn't last terribly well, but if you're buying to use shortly, it's fine. Ours is also trialling more loose fruit and veg to reduce plastic packaging, so that can only be a good thing.

We have a new Lidl and it's so clean and lovely I go there all the time. Have more than halved my Ocado bill as I love their stuff so much.

I love:
Stroopwaffels
Nuts incl spicy nuts
Salted butter in black wrapper
Tropical fruit juice
Tomatoes esp the little juicy British ones
Red peppers
Pink Lady apples - better quality than the ones I've been getting from Ocado since M&S took over
Cien luxury liquid handwash orange and bergamot - it smells so nice and is much nicer than the £££ stuff I've been using
Squash
Instant hot choc - DC say much nicer than the Cadbury one I used to buy for more than twice the price at Ocado
Biscuits

Honestly I'm obsessed. It's so satsifying coming home and deleting stuff from my Ocado order that is a million times more expensive.

Toffee yum yums from the bakery.
The cat litter is excellent and not nearly as dusty as other brands.
The mini vegetarian spring rolls (box of 29 not the 4 big ones) are very moreish.
The bags of nuts, especially the walnuts.
And maybe tmi but the moist toilet paper is not as stinky fragranced as other brands.
I love the French week - macarons, madeleines and yummy little potato balls.

Rollergirl1980 · 07/06/2021 19:58

Their version of almond Magnums 😋

Rosieandtwinkle · 07/06/2021 20:02

Comte de Senneval Champagne Brut , £12.99 and better than prosecco!

LagunaBubbles · 07/06/2021 20:03

Raspberry vodka!

I agree with this!
Galliano · 07/06/2021 20:18

Last week was Asian week. If you happen to spot the jackfruit bao bun can really recommend them. Only £2.99 for nine.

ssd · 07/06/2021 20:20

Cien liquid handwash in a clear bottle, orange and bergamot i think, its lovely

TheWeeDonkey · 07/06/2021 20:21

Watching with interest. I always used to shop in Lidl because it was on my way home from work, haven't been for ages but really impressed when we went this weekend.

The4teddybears · 07/06/2021 20:22

Since the pandemic I’ve not brought any thing from the bakery . It’s not wrapped or properly covered up . Tough decision as the bakery products are beautiful 🤩 .

ssd · 07/06/2021 20:24

Great thread

BarbaraPapa · 07/06/2021 20:25

YY to the full fat Greek yoghurt - perfect for breakfast with a handful of oats & chopped fruit. or jam

Also DH has finally found his Holy Grail of low alcohol mid-week 'beer': the light blue cap Petronas wheat beer which he now prefers to the real thing. And it's about 65p a bottle.

The4teddybears · 07/06/2021 20:25

I second that their garlic sausage is just the best. Garlic sausage and tomato sandwich 🥪. 👍

Arbadacarba · 07/06/2021 20:27

Their cream cheese is about a quarter of the price of Philadelphia and twice as nice.

Treezan82 · 07/06/2021 20:28

The brownies from the bakery are amazing. Basic frozen cheese and tomato pizzas are amazing value.

Nancylovesthecock · 07/06/2021 20:29

Not much, aldi is 100% better.

Seren20 · 07/06/2021 20:30

Haven’t been to Lidl for ages. Anyone know if they still have that Schogetten chocolate?

suggestionsplease1 · 07/06/2021 20:31

Chocolate brownies from their bakery are amazing!

Frozen seafood
Roast in bag chickens /spatchcock chicken
Parma/serano ham
Bagged salads are perfectly good and about half price of big supermarkets
