To ask you to tell me what's good in lidl?

For the first time in about 2ish years (mostly due to the pandemic and shielding) I am going to be near a lidl tomorrow for an appointment and I'm already looking forward to a cookie and a warm cheese straw from the bakery 🤤

As its been so long I am wondering if there are any special secret items that I should get to try? Open to food, cleaning and other items as its been so long since I was there. I remenber the wash liquid was always a decent price and the butter ring biscuits were always melt in the mouth as they were my dad's faves.

I'm disappointed with our local supermarket deliveries (Asda and Sainsbury's, haven't been able to book a Tesco slot since feb) and paying more for less and less (and increasingly poor quality /poor dates) so ready for a change.

Thank you

Nothing good in lidl whatsoever same as aldi, full of shit and shit food that goes off the next day

Boobahs · 07/06/2021 20:33

Definitely the brownies from the bakery. Best ones I've ever had!

Huge pots of strawberry yogurt, so thick and creamy.

They do a cherry crumble cake, which is by the 'cupboard cakes' as I would call them. Delicious warmed through and topped with custard.

Waitrose

SkankingMopoke · 07/06/2021 20:40

@Gottalovesummer

Bread Fruit Coleslaw (premium one) Pizzas Juice Cleaning wipes and bleach- so cheap Own brand crisps Wine esp their Spanish wine Branded chocolate is cheaper Most of their bakery items!
It took a moment to register that you meant "Bread, fruit, Coleslaw" 😂 Bread fruit coleslaw would be an abomination, premium or not (and I wondered how on Earth I'd missed seeing that monstrosity on the shelves!).

@The4teddybears

Since the pandemic I’ve not brought any thing from the bakery . It’s not wrapped or properly covered up . Tough decision as the bakery products are beautiful 🤩 .
Yeah why is it not covered it always grosses me out thinking of people touching or coughing in it! When we used the lidl in France every thing was behind glass and you had to ease it outwith the tongs like a vending machine! So munch more hygienic.

They do some good ice-cream. Also prefer their sweet potato fries as they actually go crispy. Half the price of mcCains and cartedor too which is a bargain.

Charlieandlola · 07/06/2021 20:46

Longdistance · 07/06/2021 20:46

The lasagne is lush.
Deluxe coleslaw.
Their porridge pots are great, smell lovely too as everyone at work comments on the delicious smell.
Their olive spread.
Wraps are great.

RedcurrantPuff · 07/06/2021 20:54

Hairbrush123 · 07/06/2021 21:06

Chocolate brownie from the bakery, lobster, deluxe diced beef (love it in a stew!), deluxe yogurts (the passion fruit one is gorgeous) and their chocolate. I really like the almond chocolate.

Premium coleslaw
Butter short bread
Chocolate brownies
Cheeses
Maple or honey back bacon
Caramelised onion quiche

Sometimesonly · 07/06/2021 21:07

Brownies? Yumyums? British Lidl sounds much more interesting than Italian Lidl!

Sindragosan · 07/06/2021 21:13

The perfume "Suddenly" is a reasonable knock off of Chanel, and although it doesn't last its super cheap and you can respray during the day.

@Cottonheadedninymuggins

Fabulous! Thank you, I'm making a fast growing shopping list 😂 haven't hard a garlic sausage sandwich in years 🤤🤤
Lidl garlic sausage on Aldi's sourdough baguette, is very good. Lidl Black Forest ham is very useful, good wrapped round chicken breast, cheaper and more flavour that parma ham.
SarahBellam · 07/06/2021 21:22

The coconut yoghurt is delicious. The Welsh cheese (in the red pack) is better than the Scottish cheese (in the blue pack) but they’re both still delicious. The frozen onions - absolute game changer. On Greek week the huge green olives in the pretty jar - brilliant for marinading with lemon and garlic. Their posh olive oil is great.

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 07/06/2021 21:22

This is going to be expensive.... haha

Yeah the uncovered bakery items eek me out a little bit too - same with the salad bar in Morrisons (though it's very rare I get up there as it's about 6 miles away and I don't drive) I solve that problem by being outside as soon as the doors open so I'm the first/one of the first to get what I need :)

The bakery - I've never seen anyone licking or touching the items but I do go to the nicer Lidl in our city (there are 4!).

The posh pizzas

The garlic bread

The small iced coffee drinks

They do a delicious apple crisp/bake thing, I can't remember what it's called but it's like baked apples under an oaty/crumbly layer that you can warm through. It's usually by the brioche/non-cereal breakfast items

The Greek yoghurt

The themed weeks often have some nice bits too.

stitchy · 07/06/2021 21:34

Toffee Yum Yums from the bakery
All in One dishwasher tablets
The Deluxe frozen potato gratins (mostly Christmas-time not all year round)
Oven bottom muffins
Cafe Latte chocolate sticks
Fruit and Nut choc in the purple wrapper

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 07/06/2021 21:38

The brownies from the bakery bit are amazing. I like their biggish bags of cola bottles, think they're Sweet Shop? Their cereal bars, their own brand Weetabix are nice, best own brand ones I've found. I could walk up and down the middle of Lidl all day long. They do jars of curry sauce to make your own curry that have a little sachet of powder on the top of the lid, think they're a quid and make life so easy after a busy day at work they taste really good too

Cissyandflora · 07/06/2021 21:40

I have only just discovered Lidl. Went for the first time last month. Am now obsessed with it! Such great value and the middle is just brilliant.
Last visit I found they do a big box of fruit and veg for £1.50. I couldn’t believe it and can’t wait to go back for this again.

Melassa · 07/06/2021 21:48

The only things I buy in Lidl are cucumbers and portobello mushrooms as neither are easily available in local (Italian) supermarkets. Also all butter mini stollen at Xmas (their large one has palm oil in) and the Greek starter platter. I also like the mini taster portions of local artisanal cheeses they’ve started doing. Of course the central aisle of delights is also an attraction.

Other than that I don’t like shopping in there. Most of their processed food has dubious ingredients in, for instance the fruit yogurts and skyr often have aspartame in as well as sugar, plus crappy fillers. The prepared salads, sauces and dips are pretty horrible too, even stuff from the deluxe range. In British week a lot of the stuff was inedible (especially the crisps! And I do like a nice crisp) or I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole due to the ingredients.

I much preferred it when you could buy German food, such as the sunflower loaf and other German breads, and a much wider range of lovely chocolate than you can get now.

Interestingly many of the items listed in this thread as being Italian, like the pesto focaccia and the fresh sourdough pizza, are not available in Italian Lidl. Or else I’ve not been often enough to spot them, but then I suppose I would go to a bakery for those items and not really look out for them in Lidl. 🤷🏻‍♀️
