To think this is too far to walk?

To school for a child?

15 minutes there and then 15 minutes back. Child is 7. It's to collect another child so would have to do the walk back immediately.

@schoolfinder007 do you have a link for that thread please as I could do with a good laugh?

hellomeluvly · 03/06/2021 22:49

School is exhausting. What is the mileage ? Just because my DS is a great walker at the weekend, but after school it takes us 15 painful minutes to walk home and it's only half a mile.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 03/06/2021 22:58

DS, to be fair, has always been a "good walker" but was walking further than this to nursery 5 days a week at 3. Unless there are underlying concerns I don't think it should be a problem.

Just tried to search for it but I think it's gone. Unfortunate as it was a corker of a thread

It’s totally fine!! My son is 7 and can easily do 30 mins there and 30 mins back. Especially great in the summer, I take his scooter along but winter is fine too.
Good exercise

LouKelly · 04/06/2021 00:12

You do know that there was a time when no one had a car ? Buses hadnt been invented ? Even now lots of people still dont have cars ,they use their legs ,you do know what legs are for dont you ? Loooads of people of all ages use them regularly , they tend to be the fit types that sleep realy well , you will have passed them in your car no doubt ,im 54 disabled and ive never had a car ,as i kid i had to walk 45 mins each way to school ,we couldnt afford bus fare ,i now walk everwhere ,on crutches ,its painfull but it tires me out which means i sleep well .

Ingridla · 04/06/2021 00:35

It's not too far, if anything it's not far enough. Not to go all 'in my day' on you but I walked just under a mile to school and back from 6-10yrs old, I've no doubt it was good for me.

I'm just here for the competitive posts..my baby crawls six miles to fetch their own milk etc...
So true! What a blast as such an amusing light hearted thread. Waiting for the my child won Olympic Gold medals in multiple disciplines and became an innovative entrepreneur CEO disruptor boast post!
DeflatedGinDrinker · 04/06/2021 01:20

My ASD son was walking around a 30 min walk to nursery and 30 mins back. Was probably even longer as it takes that long to get to that area now and hes a teen now. 15 mins is nothing.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 04/06/2021 01:45

My 4 year old can walk 4km to and back from the shops happily while her 7 year old sister makes it sound like she’s been forced to walk in the freezing rain, bare foot and it’s uphill both ways.

Some it depends on the kid.
Scootering helps make it less whiny for my 7 year old.

I haven't seen any one here post saying their child can walk ridiculous distances. Quite normal distances actually.
If your child can't walk simple distances then maybe you should take a serious look at why not I stead of posting these silly, defensive posts.

kowari · 04/06/2021 07:55

@StopCryingYourHeartOut I agree, it's annoying when people imagine competitiveness where there is none. We are all different and just sharing experiences, outlier does not mean competitive.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/06/2021 08:06

Is it that you don’t want to do this extra pick up? If not just say that!

44PumpLane · 04/06/2021 08:13

Your concern is unfounded..... My 4 year olds walk 15 mins to school and then at the end of the day often go for an hours walk on the way home.

They have walked hours every day this week including a 6.5 mile walk on Tuesday acroos rocky terrain.

MudMonsters · 04/06/2021 08:32

I cannot believe some of the posts here! At 7 surely we all pop them in the puschair to corner shops not alone 15 minutes and they can have a small snack (happy meal and mcflurry or some other small bite) before dinner? Do you have any idea how exhausting it is to sit eating not alone walk at that age?
(Please note OP - this is sarcasm. YABU. Most 2 year olds walk this or further on a regular )

MudMonsters · 04/06/2021 08:36

I am guessing you have a PFB son and you are trying to attack DIL.

tentosix · 04/06/2021 08:39

We do 20 minutes each way for our 7 yo

This is x4 though, so probably a similar distance.
tentosix · 04/06/2021 08:43

Even at the end of the day he is running around on this walk home (it's through fields) and riding his scooter like a wild thing. His gran takes him on a regular basis.

HazelBite · 04/06/2021 09:11

I couldn't concentrate to drive with all 4 DC's in the car when they were young so I used to make them walk everywhere.
Its done great things for their personal stamina. Now all adults they all partake and enjoy endurance sports.

@mrstt89 I agree. Why do people have to be so nasty?
