To think this is too far to walk?

To school for a child?

15 minutes there and then 15 minutes back. Child is 7. It's to collect another child so would have to do the walk back immediately.

God it's fine, can't believe anyone would think otherwise

Whyhello · 03/06/2021 20:27

Crikey, we walk twice this and always have... my DC are fine.

Dumbo18 · 03/06/2021 20:27

Was you a little bit bored today OP? Thought you’d see how many replies you could get on mumsnet

MrsJBaptiste · 03/06/2021 20:28

My God, no wonder some 7 year olds are so chubby... 😮

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/06/2021 20:29

Blummin nora, at 8 I walked up Snowdon, with a (then undiagnosed) heart condition. And obviously back down again. My sister would have been six and a half and she beat me to the top!

What's the issue? My 4 year old walks 15-20 mins to school to drop big sis off, 15-20 mins back, and then the same trip again for pick up. Would never cross my mind that this could be too much for her. On days she's in preschool she does the same walk on a morning and after-school, and despite running around all day at school, neither of them ever complain (or any of the other kids we walk with, some walking on/from much further). We have a car, and could drive, but I wouldn't even consider it! What makes you think this is too far? Do you not go out at the weekends? Parks? Zoos? Shopping? Does the child struggle to walk for more than 15 mins at any of those places? If so, I'd be seeking medical advise as at 7, they should be lively and full of energy, and easily able to partake in a 15 min walk a few times a week! Do they not do the daily mile at school?

@TrinidadQueen

I am simply concerned it will be too far for my grandchild. Please do not throw such accusations my way. It is a simple enough question that I am asking.
No it's not too far, it's hardly any kind of distance at all.
Whoopsies · 03/06/2021 20:37

My 7 year old walked 12km today...

TheGumption · 03/06/2021 20:39

You're being ridiculous. Half an hour walk?! My kids do more than that daily with me and the dog!

Chocolateandamaretto · 03/06/2021 20:39

Christ, my 7 year old walked for about 2 hours today, plus an hour in the park. School only 10 minutes away but she (and 5 year old brother) happily walk to the park in the opposite direction after school, play for an hour then do the half hour walk home. A 7 year old should be fine with a half hour walk!!

j712adrian · 03/06/2021 20:48

No, it’s fine.

legalseagull · 03/06/2021 20:50

This is why we have an obesity problem. 15 minutes is a stroll that my 2yo and 3yo could do. This must be a wind up?

CaviarAndCigarettes · 03/06/2021 20:50

My now 7 year old has been doing this walk since he was three as the nursery is attached to the school.
His younger siblings do it too.

PPCD · 03/06/2021 20:50

You are being ridiculous. That is barely a walk.

transformandriseup · 03/06/2021 20:51

Once my two year old learns to walk in a straight line on the pavement she will be walking 15 minutes to nursery each way.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/06/2021 20:54

Bloody hell. I'm a single parent non driver and school is a 30 minute walk away, 7yo DS and I walk there and back every day in all weathers. 15 minutes is nothing!

supermoonrising · 03/06/2021 20:58

@schoolfinder007

*Your grandchild?
Christ, I'm shocked you managed to successfully raise 1 child.

My 1.5 year old walks at least 3 times that every single day.

You're nuts*

I can think of a few much less flattering adjectives for you.

edwinbear · 03/06/2021 20:59

There were 7 yr olds at DC’s rugby camp today, who did a straight 5 hrs of running about playing rugby.

DC have been walking 15 mins each way to school since Reception. Children age 5-18 should be doing 60 mins of exercise daily, so really, that’s insufficient if they do no other exercise.

TentTalk · 03/06/2021 21:06

I think a 30 minute walk 3 days a week is totally do-able. More than that, it's healthy.

Is it that you've been asked to collect 2 grandchildren from different schools? If you don't want to do it, just don't do it. But thinking it's too much for a 7yo is really odd and I'd be worried about them if they couldn't do that.

NameyNameyNameChangey · 03/06/2021 21:09

Not at all.
I assume- 15 minutes there, day at school and then later, 15 minutes back?
Absolutely fine. My primary school was about that distance away.

MiriamMargo · 03/06/2021 21:10

really find this bizarre that you think 15 mins is to far to walk for a 7yr old. No wonder there are so many unhealthy children

jsp56 · 03/06/2021 21:12

I think this may be one of these "Know your own child" situations. Some children would struggle. Some children do have additional needs that have not been identified. Only the OP would know this child, and she clearly has concerns. It's hard for us to know clearly what the issue is.
