To think this is too far to walk?

To school for a child?

15 minutes there and then 15 minutes back. Child is 7. It's to collect another child so would have to do the walk back immediately.

Are you serious OP?

Rexasaurus · 03/06/2021 18:23

Could they use a scooter or ride a bike?

We tend to take scooters for our kids if it’s a longer walk & we know they won’t be keen. It helps

CirqueDeMorgue · 03/06/2021 18:23

I think this is a sort of reverse where I someone has accused the OP of abuse for making a 7 year old walk that far. An ex perhaps?

Not unlikely. DD and I used to walk about 20-25mins to get her to school. I remember someone who worked there commenting to me that it's such a long walk she'll be exhausted before she even starts the day! What a disgraceful attitude to exercise, no wonder this woman was porky.

@TrinidadQueen
What’s the concern 30 minutes with a stop in the middle, does no one in your family go for walks or walk anywhere?

spanielstail · 03/06/2021 18:25

My 4 1/2 year olds climbed Snowdon a few weeks ago. They walk the dogs with me every day and go up in the hills at the weekend.

Come to think if it my 94 year old grandmother walked over 15 minutes at the weekend.

If you are being serious then I'm honestly appalled that you have a child so unfit they can't go for 15 minutes.

WorraLiberty · 03/06/2021 18:25

I'm sure if the parents thought their child needed a bike or a scooter, they would've suggested one.
Crowsandshivers · 03/06/2021 18:26

My two year old could do that....

Zzelda · 03/06/2021 18:26

Not only is it not too far, it's a great opportunity for some quality 1:1 time with the adult taking your grandchild.

moynomore · 03/06/2021 18:28

Totally fine and you do not need to take "lots of snacks" as one poster suggested.

Viviennemary · 03/06/2021 18:29

Not too bad. And I am not a great fan of walking. Never have been.

Streamingbannersofdawn · 03/06/2021 18:29

Our walk to school was 30 minutes and one was quite the reluctant walker. It was fine. Obviously they did it after the school day as well.

Nowstrong · 03/06/2021 18:31

I do it regularly with my 6 year old grand child...
Peanuts.

spiderlight · 03/06/2021 18:32

Mine would have managed that with no problem at all.

Loubiemoo · 03/06/2021 18:33

Unless its a 15 minute walk on the M25, I see no issues at all.

spaceghett0 · 03/06/2021 18:33

WHY do you think it's too far OP? Don't they walk that much during the day usually? Lots of people have asked and you haven't answered but does your GC have additional needs? Are they going to be walking with other kids they know? My DC are a bit reluctant sometimes to walk to school but they don't even notice the walk home when they're with their mates.

HeronLanyon · 03/06/2021 18:39

Assuming either you really don’t like dil or her parenting and this has been kind of blown out proportion - in which case I hope we’ve all helped bring U.K. back a bit to reality
OR somehow you are involved and don’t want to be - non which case just tell whoever that it too much for you.
Either way good luck op.

YanTanTethera123 · 03/06/2021 18:47
@TrinidadQueen - Is it possible that it is you that doesn't want to do the walk?

If you don't want to walk to pick up someone else's kids, then tell them. But don't suggest that it's because one of the kids is too young to manage it as that will make you look a bit daft.
I wondered this too, otherwise it has to be a windup, surely?
At 5 I walked on my own to and from school, a mile each way. My DCs walked a 3 mile round trip to school and my DGCs do the same plus an hour chasing around the park after school each day.
I do wonder what lead to this question!

Peoniesandpeaches · 03/06/2021 18:49

As a general rule of thumb children can walk about a mile per year of age so definitely not too far.

Blue4YOU · 03/06/2021 18:49

Is this some weird idea that your GC should relocate schools so they don’t have to walk!
I’m 46 and when I was 5-13 I walked the best part of an hour to and the same back from school. It was in the countryside (different country) And I was tubby and not in the least interested in exercise or sport. And got home and looked after the toddler and from age 11 up did the cooking and cleaning before my homework.
I was tubby then too.
Look - even my DD who actually can’t walk spends more than that each day trying to learn to walk (serious disabilities).
You’ve got to be joking!!

Nicolastuffedone · 03/06/2021 18:51

Are they walking on they’re hands?? Otherwise, no, it’s not too far to walk 🙄

Frazzlefrazle · 03/06/2021 18:53

We are hiking up Edale on Saturday with our almost 7 year old. Of course it's not too far.

MintyMabel · 03/06/2021 18:53

Mine could do it and she has CP, uses a walking frame. I’d have thought an able bodied child should manage.

spookycookies · 03/06/2021 18:56

My three year old does this twice a day.

Diva66 · 03/06/2021 18:58

No, it’s not too far. No wonder there’s so much childhood obesity.

diamondpony80 · 03/06/2021 19:06

Why would it be too far? DD age 6 will walk for at least an hour before getting tired and she’s not particularly fit.
