To think this is too far to walk?

To school for a child?

15 minutes there and then 15 minutes back. Child is 7. It's to collect another child so would have to do the walk back immediately.

My 3 year old walks more than this on a daily basis, has done since our lockdown walks started last year

mummyofthreemunchkins · 03/06/2021 21:19

15 minutes, at 7... really?!?!?!
My 4 year old will walk 20/25 minutes to pre school, have a whole day of activities, and then do the same walk home, 5 days a week, and still carry on until bedtime. I'm pretty certain that unless there is mobility issues 30 minutes a day wouldn't be a problem!

1Morewineplease · 03/06/2021 21:20

I walked for more than 15 minutes, to and from school , with my Year R daughter.

Alas , it seems too long for many parents which is why we have such shocking parking outside our school.

Tal45 · 03/06/2021 21:21

My ds walked up Snowdon when he was 7, a 15 minute walk twice a day is nothing.

FudgeSundae · 03/06/2021 21:23

Pretty sure my not quite 2 year old could manage this walk OP.

TellMeMoreThanThis · 03/06/2021 21:23

I'm just here for the competitive posts..my baby crawls six miles to fetch their own milk etc...

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 03/06/2021 21:27

When dd was 3 she walked a little over a mile to nursery then at lunch time walked home. Then at school pick up walked a bit further than that to be brother's school to pick him up and then home again. A 7 year old will be fine.

NeverHadANickname · 03/06/2021 21:40

It is definitely not too far but I'm sure their parents would know better. For context, my 20 month old walked for over an hour at the weekend. There were some stops but he would manage 30 minutes no problem.

My baby climbed Everest before he could walk and abseils to school 17 times a day using only his teeth
threeteenstaximum · 03/06/2021 21:47

Have we understood this correctly OP
An adult is walking with7 year old 15 mins 3x week to and from school ?

And you are worried it may be too far??

It is not too far.
A 7 year old can do this easily unless they are disabled
A 7 year old can walk far further
Before cars, or for this without cars, children and parents walked for hours

A 30 min walk each way easily every school day is quite normal for most children, and if an adult is walking with them there's not even an age concern at all!

threeteenstaximum · 03/06/2021 21:52

@TrinidadQueen

I am simply concerned it will be too far for my grandchild. Please do not throw such accusations my way. It is a simple enough question that I am asking.
Your grandchild? Did you not walk with your children when you were younger? My mum used to walk and hour and half to and from her school with her siblings- in snow and whatever. I used to walk 45 mins from primary school each way with my big sister. We have cars now and parents can make their children lazy but 30 mins either way is the norm, but further 45 mins but children love the walk they look around, get pokey sticks for mum, jump in puddles , look at the tree and wildlife and it's a positive thing- a nice special time when the world stops and goes at their pace.

It's really surprising that you might think 15 mins either way is a big deal... I hope we have all answers your AIBU to worry- yes sorry but yes you are

threeteenstaximum · 03/06/2021 21:55

Get pokey sticks for MUD not "mum" 🤣🤣
( DCs please don't poke mum!)

User657849 · 03/06/2021 21:56

Maybe get him a scooter?

Livelovebehappy · 03/06/2021 21:56

I think it’s sad tbh that someone would think 30 minutes exercise per day for a child of 7 is too much. It’s healthy to have at least this much exercise daily.

Passthesauce · 03/06/2021 22:00

I walk my 5 year old to school every day.
It takes 35 mins.

I tend to pick up in the car, as we often have things to take his older sibs too, but for a 15-minute walk, that would be more hassle than it's worth.

It's really not far.

jumpbounce · 03/06/2021 22:06

And this is the issue in this country leading to a childhood obesity crisis. My tiny 4 year old (size of an average 2 year old) who has medical issues related to lungs/breathing manages to walk over 1mile to school, 1 mile home and then one mile back again and home again to collect a sibling so covering around 5 miles a day with no issues.
In a very large school with a 4 form entry we are one of only about 5 families who walk to and from school in reception year which is actually unbelievable!

bruffin · 03/06/2021 22:07

When ds was 5 we had to do that. We had 15 minutes to walk a mile so that was really rushed but we had the same walk back , but we had a more leisurely walk back

Eatingsoupwithafork · 03/06/2021 22:19

My DD, nearly 2, walked to and from nursery today - 45 minutes each way although at an adults pace would be c.25 mins. She had been at nursery 10 hours, albeit did nap about 1.5 hours during day. We also do lots of walking on a weekend, we take her pushchair but she wants to walk most of the time.

Skyliner001 · 03/06/2021 22:21

OP your hilarious (and no doubt overbearing) 😂🤣

DeathStare · 03/06/2021 22:27

The OP is the same grandmother who was annoyed with her friend for joking about farting in front of the grandchild. OP you need to unclench.

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 03/06/2021 22:36

Absolutely fine. Mine were doing this and more easily.
Maybe get a scooter if you are worried but you are worrying unnecessarily

Bluebird76 · 03/06/2021 22:37

I know a (very) elderly lady who in the 1930s had to walk 3.5 hours to school in the next village...and 3.5 hours home again at the end of the day. Along a dirt track. From the age of 6 - no adults, just her and her siblings. I can just imagine her reaction to this OP Grin

Libraryghost · 03/06/2021 22:37

And we wonder why we have a child obesity problem! The child is 7, they are full of energy. I used to 45 mins each way school then go and play out on my bike! I think your kid will be fine

Oh now that was a funny thread!
Hcolhcsra · 03/06/2021 22:40

My 5 year old happily walked to fetch her sister from school, a mile (20 minute walk) away, from the age of about 3 and a half. Can't see why it would be an issue for a seven year old.
