To think this is too far to walk?

To school for a child?

15 minutes there and then 15 minutes back. Child is 7. It's to collect another child so would have to do the walk back immediately.

I used to walk that four times a day at that age. Kids had to walk as fathers always used the cars, very rare for Mothers to have a car of their own. Very rare to see an obese kid back then.

My five year old has just come back from walking up Cnicht mountain with his dad. Three hours total. I despair if an able bodied 7 year old is being told they can’t walk a half hour round trip three times a week.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 03/06/2021 19:10

My dd was walking 2 miles to nursery and back aged 3. So for miles in total. Looking back it was really, bloody far but no car and no buses so no other choice.

She's 22 now and walks miles without thinking about it so it's obviously stood her in good stead.

I will say tho I absolutely piled on weight when I dropped the school runs and stopped walking up around 10 miles total each day. I was really fit and healthy back then.

zingally · 03/06/2021 19:13

Unless the child has additional needs, a 30 minute walk, for a 7 year old, is absolutely fine!

LolaSmiles · 03/06/2021 19:16

This has to be a wind up or a reverse.
Nobody can seriously be concerned that a short walk is a problem for a 7 year old.

kowari · 03/06/2021 19:23

Where DS went to school they had to live a minimum of a mile away as the crow flies or a mile and a half walking distance to be eligible for a bus pass from year 3 (from 7 and a half). So half an hour walk twice a day every day.

Once a day three times a week shouldn't be a problem for a healthy 7 year old. Do they have a scooter if you are worried they are too unfit to manage the walk?

LadyDanburysCane · 03/06/2021 19:25

@TrinidadQueen Not coming back OP?

SemperIdem · 03/06/2021 19:32

Don’t be so ridiculous

iloveeverykindofcat · 03/06/2021 19:42

Not to invoke the Four Yorkshiremen but I literally did that in nursery school :S

applespearslemons · 03/06/2021 19:43

My 3 year old could do this; no problem

Mama1993 · 03/06/2021 19:48

My 3 y/o would comfortably walk that, albeit a bit slower perhaps!

blacksax · 03/06/2021 19:52

It is a simple enough question that I am asking

And a straightforward answer that you have been given. By everybody.

cadburyegg · 03/06/2021 19:54

What?? Of course it’s not too far. My DS has been walking 20 minutes to school and back since he was 4!

IamMoana · 03/06/2021 19:59

It's not too far. My 6 year old walks half an hour to school, same back home, 5 days a week. Weekends we walk the coastal path, she's been known to clear 12+ miles (with plenty of rests along beaches.) I wouldn't dream of ferrying her about in the car for the sake of 15 minutes, we walk as much as we can. It's free, so good for you & not enough kids do it (not their fault).

TheLongHardSlog · 03/06/2021 20:00

My almost 7 year old has some additional needs and still manages a 10-15 minute walk to school, a full school day and a slightly slower paced (but same distance) walk home from school.

Occasionally she'll want to go the park which is a mile from school and manages to walk there and then the 1.5 miles home after.

BaronessOfTheNorth · 03/06/2021 20:01

😂....our walk to school takes 25 minutes. My child (aged 5) is fine.

Hankunamatata · 03/06/2021 20:03

It's fine or let them take scooter or bike

Hankunamatata · 03/06/2021 20:03

I think kids are suppose to be active for an hour a day

4PawsGood · 03/06/2021 20:06

@Hankunamatata

I think kids are suppose to be active for an hour a day
As a minimum Smile
Wearethetwirl · 03/06/2021 20:09

Well OP you must be winding us up, cos everyday my 4 month old climbed Everest hopping on one knee AND star jump all the way down whilst being shot at by an elite group of pirate assassins.

tootiredtospeak · 03/06/2021 20:12

With an adult...dont be silly surely they walk more than that round a park at the shops ect.

flippertygibbit · 03/06/2021 20:19

Not too far - used to walk further than that to and from school everyday aged 5.

flippertygibbit · 03/06/2021 20:20

Oh yeah - after the first week on my own too :)

YourCakesAreShit · 03/06/2021 20:23

My primary school was a half hour walk away and we did that, come rain or shine, twice a day, because there wasn't a choice.

The child will be fine Hmm

ElaborateSalad · 03/06/2021 20:26

Of course it isn't too far
