To tell friend this outfit is inappropriate

Can I just say I am usually let people wear what the hell they want without criticism.

My friend has sent me a photo of her in a outfit for her brothers wedding. It is a white jumpsuit that is cut right down to the navel, she has big boobs so basically all that is covered is her nipples. I am guessing she must have some kind of body tape keeping it in place.
She doesn’t get on at all with sister in law to be so I think this might be to wind her up.
I have mentioned the colour and said you don’t wear white to a wedding but she has come back with it’s a jumpsuit and not a dress.
She is not going to come off well is she?

I went to a wedding a few years ago where a friend of the bride wore a chiffon pink vest top with black satin/lace shorts that looked like French knickers. Very inappropriate.

CreamOrange · 03/06/2021 11:28

Just mention that Puff Daddy's music video shoot was 22 years ago. It may be best to wear something for the wedding.

coronafiona · 03/06/2021 11:53

Some very odd relatives turned up to our wedding wearing fleeces. On the hottest day of the year. Hmm

StatisticallyChallenged · 03/06/2021 13:36

@CoraPirbright

Kate’s outfit at the Sussex wedding was actually pale yellow but the sun bleached it out in the photos. If you look at the interior chapel pics, it is clearly yellow.

OP you have been a good friend - even though she told you to FO, you still counselled caution. It’s totally the wrong way to go about things - she thinks she is going to stick it to the bride when in fact, all sympathy will be with the bride and she is going to look like a pillowcase/nutter in that trashy outfit.

Kate was definitely wearing pale yellow.

I also think the style of the outfit and the wedding plays a part too. Take Kate's pale yellow - formal style, knee length, covered up, and worn to a very formal wedding where the bride was absolutely going to be wearing a formal bridal gown. Zero risk of looking bridal, like she was showing off or trying to upstage the bride.

The same outfit worn to, say, Charles and Camilla's registry office ceremony however, I wouldn't have risked. Less formal ceremony, older bride and second wedding - high risk of the bride's outfit being very similar.

Bright white and in a revealing style - you're making a point.

GorgeousNightingale · 03/06/2021 13:54

Kate was definitely wearing pale yellow.

I looked this up again, and I squinted, moved my head a bit - I see like meringue white?? Certainly making a type of statement, but it resembles a housecoat that people wore in the 60s/70s so not sure what she was trying to say!

"I checked out of interest and Catherine wore white (well, off-white / ivory) to Harry and Meghan's wedding too (although she could not have been a bridesmaid - or am I mistaken here?)"

I just checked that and I had no idea, unsurprisingly the bias press conveniently ignored it. But Kate is trash so I'm not surprised. [/quote]
It was yellow. Hth

FishyFriday · 03/06/2021 14:17

That's exactly what the woman wants, though: to be what people remember about the wedding.

Yes... but no one will remember her positively. I can't imagine why you'd want to be the butt of everyone's jokes for many years to come.

StatisticallyChallenged · 03/06/2021 14:20

When you see it against the bridesmaid's dresses (there's a few photos showing both) it's clearly yellow. It's also noticeably not white in group shots with Meghan.

BestOfABadLot · 03/06/2021 14:24

@Finfintytint

Let women wear what they want without criticism. If she likes it and feels comfortable then so what? Some people like to seek attention so let her crack on.
Because being an attention seeker at a wedding is inconsiderate to the actual couple getting married. It's not just about whether she feels comfortable (a nudist might feel totally comfortable being naked at a wedding) it's whether you're making other people uncomfortable.
Kissthepastrychef · 03/06/2021 14:24

Don't seem to be able to add the picture from here but the inside pictures clearly show Catherine's outfit to be yellow

I'm not entirely sure why Kate's outfit is such a topic of conversation here. Whatever the bloody colour, it's not a jumpsuit that barely covered her breasts.

Hmm, strange really. Maybe she got changed (realising her faux pas) before the group shot?
Kissthepastrychef · 03/06/2021 14:27

Also she'd worn it several times before and apparently selected it to try and avoid any interest in her outfit taking attention from Meghan

@FishyFriday I think those of us that want to defend her have got caught up with trying to show the detractors that they are wrong - hence the detail

Kissthepastrychef · 03/06/2021 14:29

Detail ? Bloody ipad

DERAIL

Kissthepastrychef · 03/06/2021 14:35

OP have you got an invite to this jamboree ? It sounds well worth attending for entertainment value alone

StatisticallyChallenged · 03/06/2021 14:38

I don't think she got changed in to an identical dress outfit a shade darker, it's a trick of the light. The reports of it being worn before were wrong though - she has another the same cut in ivory, worn to Charlotte's christening. Very very similar but there were some differences, sleeves if I recall correctly.

And yup, bit of a derail! But the photo inside the church shows it's yellow. Not really a comparison to a bright white boob flashing extravaganza.

This.

I reckon op could create a bingo card of comments and actions that will happen
  • folk taking photos on phones (to send to friends saying "omg")
  • wine spillage
  • photographer putting her on the very edge of photos, or behind people
  • gasps
  • drunken relative of bride calling her something mean to her face...
Pipsquiggle · 03/06/2021 14:49

OP you have done what you can. She asked your opinion, you gave it to her. Your 'friend' sounds a bit devious & stupid TBH - devious as she absolutely knows what she is doing; stupid for thinking this won't have any negative fallout for her

BestOfABadLot · 03/06/2021 14:49

I do think it's completely mad that people are paying such scrutiny to royal wedding outfits. It's very unlikely they went down to Debenham's on their own and picked out an outfit with some kind of machiavellian motive behind it. They'll have had people to help them and they'll just be trying to get through a day in which they know they'll be in spotlight without causing a scene. It would hardly be the opportunity to pursue some kind of personal vendetta when half the world's press is scrutinising their every move.

Oh come off it. This isn't about criticising what women wear, it's about preventing someone from intentionally doing something to upset another person.
