AIBU to be laughing,. A lot. What is he to do? He's lost his supply of cheap labour having voted and campaigned for it to happen.

Man's an idiot. People will buy beer no matter who is selling it. It doesn't require any special talent to make money from selling alcohol. Shareholders, throw him out. Wont make any difference to your sales although you might see a small increase from those who wont go near the pubs because of him.

I'm howling! He sacked his workers during furlough, treats them appallingly anyway and he wanted this! Oh but he didn't. So now we have him, the fishermen and the PM all getting want they wanted but it turned out to not be this!

longwayoff · 03/06/2021 10:10

Schadenfreude. We fight against it but sometimes it's just irresistible Grin. We lost. This is helping me get over it. Thanks WSpoon.

Do you get bonus points ?
I hope Home Office is keeping score😁

Well well well. Wonder if his Irish pubs will sell EU made beers? Cos they needn't bother reopening next week if they don't grin
It was in his newspapers/unsolicited mail. I now wonder if they try it in there😂😂😂

The words chickens, roost and home come to mind.

User135644 · 03/06/2021 12:18

It's the way he's talking about wanted a liberal immigration system as well. I wonder what his Brexit loving fan club make of that one down the local Spoons.

He kept that policy idea quiet during the campaigns.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/06/2021 13:00

@User135644

A lot of younger women would rather be their own boss and set up an Only Fans account than work for a Tim Martin or low paid, insecure work. A lot of younger men would rather sit at home on their xbox.

Now we can't blame the EU anymore, the focus will start to shift onto lazy Brits. Either that or we just import tens of thousands of more people into an over crowded country.

Over 5 million people have applied to the Eu Settlement Scheme anyway. It's not like every EU national went back to Poland and Italy etc in the last few years.

I'm old and fat and even I'd rather flash my tits on Only Fans than make the spoony twat any money.

He assumed that there were people out there who wanted to work for him. The ones that were, he told to fuck off and get a proper job. And now, surprisingly enough, they don't want to go back to the same old shit again, knowing that at the first sniff of trouble, he'll fuck them off again without a shred of conscience.

But that's the thing with a shitty employer. Nobody likes them and because they don't owe him allegiance like a feudal lord, they don't work for them if they can avoid it.

Wouldn't bother me one jot if every Spoons in the country went bust. If there's a demand for pubs, the same people could be employed in Free Houses using the old premises with a significantly greater chance of being treated like people, not serfs.

beguilingeyes · 03/06/2021 17:12

This is all very 'you won...get over it'...but the devastating, heartbreaking thing is that it's too late. These people have fucked us over and it's pretty irreversible.

I read recently that if this Australian trade deal gets signed it could prevent us ever re-joinint the Single Market.

The biggest act of self harm in history.

It may just be anecdata at the moment, but I've heard a few people comment that lockdown has driven many people to raise - not lower - their expectations of (a) work, (b) their employer and (most imporantly, c:) themselves.

Be curious into this translating into people being less keen to sell their souls to the company bore.

SimonJT · 03/06/2021 18:07

He gives wankers a bad name.

Isn’t it weird that a good chunk of your staff leave when you provide poor working conditions, shit pay and you join a national campaign against them. He gives zero shits for his employees, without them he would be worth absolutely nothing.

SmokeyDevil · 03/06/2021 18:11

I hope he goes bankrupt and loses everything. Would serve him right.

IntoAir · 03/06/2021 18:27

I laughed out loud when I heard this on the BBC news yesterday. Karma's a bitch!

Againstmachine · 03/06/2021 18:56

I'm howling! He sacked his workers during furlough

Except he don't sack all his staff, I know many wetherspoon staff and this bit isn't true, look into what he actually said.

DdraigGoch · 03/06/2021 19:29

So he'll be forced to treat his staff well if he is going to fill his vacancies. No more cheap disposable labour to treat like shit. Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

DdraigGoch · 03/06/2021 19:36

@Penistoe

I can’t take any pleasure in something that I find too heartbreaking. Brexit has delivered nothing good, not one good news story. Since the mail et al like to spin stories there has never been anything close enough to be mildly positive to spin as there hasn’t even been a hint of positive stories about Brexit. Yet brexiteers will still smugly say ‘they won’. It’s like winning a slow painful death.
Unscrupulous employers forced to improve the lot of their staff? Seems like good news to me.

The vaccination programme being two months ahead too is another good news story.

beinglikedisoverrated · 03/06/2021 19:49

How do you spell Wetherspoons?

Mr Wetherspoon - otherwise known as Mr Leave UK - wants his EU workers back.
LemonRoses · 03/06/2021 20:00

A little smug feeling of ‘don’t say you weren’t warned’. I’ll cry no tears over the demise of his chain. Odious man. Grim pubs. He and they add nothing to society.

Againstmachine · 03/06/2021 20:21

I'm not an apologist but a lot of their pubs aren't grim and it seems they attract families regularly, they sell booze cheap and cheerful.

There is a snobbish attitude about wetherspoons these days, but they are busy.

The sweet potato curry is very nice

I know, I feel the same. I try to take some enjoyment in these kinds of stories but it’s the slimmest comfort ever.

Theonewiththecandles · 03/06/2021 20:27

People on here going off about his zero hour contracts and how he sacked all his staff is a total load of shite.
The company no longer offers zero hour contracts
The offer for people to get another job was opened to them but that their job would be open should the choose to return once pubs were allowed to open.

I despise the man but his money pays half my mortgage. Not saying he isn't a total tosser but the fact that people believe every word from the media about how he "sacked" his staff is laughable. It's not what happened.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 03/06/2021 20:28

Yeah he can get fucked.

I voted to remain and foresaw all this shit which is why I voted remain.

Perhaps I should set up my crystal ball in a fair or something, I seem pretty good at it.

That's what I always say everywhere. People want "fair wage" etc, but still go and buy burger and pint for under 8 quid. (Which should also shout out about quality...)
Againstmachine · 03/06/2021 20:30

Exactly one of my most left wing friends works for him and he corrects people on media, yeah Martin maybe a shit, but remember there is people in jobs working for this company, wanting the company to fail is wanting lots of people out of a job.
