AIBU to be laughing,. A lot. What is he to do? He's lost his supply of cheap labour having voted and campaigned for it to happen.

Jolly good. Maybe the hike in prices necessitated will result in fewer fights when the pissed up people that frequent his establishments disagree.

Kissthepastrychef · 02/06/2021 13:10

@RuggerHug and I'm sure Tesco pay more and treat their staff better. Plus staff discount is considerably more useful from a supermarket than a grotty pub

Exactly! Who would leave that to go back to his kips?

Blacktothepink · 02/06/2021 13:21

This has made my day 😂😂😂😂

Chocolatier9 · 02/06/2021 13:33

How come people are clever enough to build successful businesses or acquire strong degrees from Oxbridge and lots of power frequently behave or speak so stupidly?

It’s a question that’s been exercising me a lot, lately. The adults in charge really aren’t what I expected.

Crowsaregreat · 02/06/2021 13:33

It's a bit funny. But the next step for the brexit lot is to say these jobs need to be filled by British workers and benefits are too cushy etc.

Then they'll make people's lives miserable until they take those jobs.

Fuck. I didn't think of that. You are probably right. Sad
BorisKilledMyHusband · 02/06/2021 13:45

Those bloody foreigners - not coming over here and not taking are (sic) jobs.

JediGnot · 02/06/2021 13:46

New law - anyone who campaigns for brexit and / or free-market / right wing capitalism who then moans about the effects of brexit or the way markets work, automatically needs to give all staff a 10% pay rise for gross hypocrisy

User135644 · 02/06/2021 14:25

I expect the competition for jobs will explode once furlough ends.

Working your arse off all day in a mask in Wetherspoons isn't going to appeal much to people who are sat off on 80% furlough.

If Tim Martin had treated his staff properly during the lockdown, he wouldn't be short staffed now.

Moomin12345 · 02/06/2021 14:39

Maybe we should abolish all welfare, that way British people will be forced to work two jobs like many poor Americans and there will be no more foreigners 'stealing' jobs Grin

Dickhead, couldn't happen to a better person.

I remember listening to his Desert Island Discs and finding him objectionable.

I am delighted this happened to him.

newyorker74 · 02/06/2021 14:43

I used to manage a weatherspoons.I worked so many hours that my hourly rate ended up being half what my staff were earning. I feel for his staff - hopefully they all found other jobs in lockdown.

RubyGoat · 02/06/2021 14:44

I have nothing to say except HAHAHAHAHAAA that he got exactly what he voted for, the foolish man, & that DH & I don’t go in their grotty pubs anyway. Dirty, substandard & overpriced.

MustardRose · 02/06/2021 15:00

Oh well, tough ain't it?

If employers like him ditched zero-hours contracts, awful wages and stopped manipulating shift patterns so employee hours fall just below the minimum for enrolling their employees in a works pension scheme, then perhaps there wouldn't be this problem.

When you offer your employees decent terms and conditions, a secure job, regular shifts and a proper contract with holiday pay, pension etc, then people will want to work for you.

Until then, hard cheese, serves you right.

Ipanemama · 02/06/2021 15:07

I hope all his staff have better jobs now, either in Tesco or in a European bar/restaurant somewhere. Serves him right.

First person to mention the existing staff and what they face, if the company get what everyone gleefully wishes for.
pointythings · 02/06/2021 15:24

Karma is a bitch. Grin

longwayoff · 02/06/2021 15:48

Dumplings, I remind you that this situation was not actively wished upon Wetherspoons employees by MN users. It was actively pursued by their idiot employer. Take it up with him.

I don't get it. I thought that Brexit happened because foreigners were taking British jobs.
I also saw several posts here meanwhile celebrating the positive impact of Brexit as they saw postings for jobs left by the foreigners who returned to their home countries and the salary was better. Without impacting the prices of services offered by the employers, of course.
How come there's a shortage of the staff then? I assumed that Wetherspoons were only employing foreigners because there were too many of them and they were some kind of a free positions mafia, not allowing for the Brits to apply. Considering Mr. Wetherspoon was so pro-Brexit, one would assume he couldn't wait to see the backs of the foreign workers to finally start employing the Brits. Or is the job situation in Britain so fantastic that they don't want to work in hospitality sector?
I honestly do believe that Brexit should be followed by a serious reconsideration of social benefits. There must be plenty of positions open so the unemployed people should be simply told that they will either take them, relocate, if necessary or have their benefits cut.

Soubriquet · 02/06/2021 15:52

Idiot

I once read an article about a couple who lived in Spain outrages because even though they voted brexit, they never for a second thought they would have to move back to the U.K.
Smile

VettiyaIruken · 02/06/2021 15:54

Serves the twat right. He's not the sharpest tool in the box, that's for sure.

I wonder if he'll acknowledge his previous position on the matter.

WeAreTheHeroes · 02/06/2021 15:54

@moova

What a tosser.
That's exactly what I said when DP sent me a link to BBC article about this.
