Adverts at 930pm overly too overly sexual...........

Watching the Great British Pottery Throw Down on REALLY with my (teenage) kids and an advert for Love Honey came on and literally far too overt -finished with a woman in suspenders and some kind of straps across her bum cheeks hitting herself with a whip from behind-WTAF? But all the clips were seemingly about the women needing to dress up to impress the man (but that's another issue!!)
I know it is past 9pm and they are teenagers but it is half term etc.....

Followed by an advert for erectile problems!

I'm no prude but please come on! My kids were pretty revolted particularly my daughter and said 'Yuk, women aren't sexual play things for men' which was the implication of the advert.

I know porn is widely available but we click or don't click but an advert when we are relaxing watching a Pottery Programme -give me a break.

I don't have any problem with sex toys, I own some, but I still find it really strange seeing a tv advert for them. It's not just about kids seeing it, I felt pretty uncomfortable watching tv with my parents and seeing that ad. Lots of things are normal/bodily functions/fine for people to do behind closed doors - you're not a prude for thinking it doesn't need to be shown on a normal tv channel

TorringtonDean · 06/06/2021 07:45

There used to be this thing called love but now it’s all be reduced to getting your end away at all times without any meaningful relationship - and the marketing is nearly always about men objectifying women. I find it utterly depressing.

CirqueDeMorgue · 06/06/2021 10:00

Lovehoney sells stuff for men too so I guess that makes them playthings for women?

CirqueDeMorgue · 06/06/2021 10:06

It's disturbing how many adult women seem to find anything sex-related utterly repulsive. You know sex is great for more than just making babies, right?

I have nothing against the ad, but agree it should be on later. 9pm is too early for ads involving arse spanking, sex toys or whatever, and could easily be seen by young teens or pre teens. After 10.30pm would be more appropriate.

TorringtonDean · 06/06/2021 10:23

Don’t women have a right to not want to be sex objects? And to not have swinging ads forced on us when listening to the radio? Or love honey ads on TV at 9pm? I agree it is waaaay to early. Prude? What an insult! Sort of thing a creepy perv said to me when I caught him photographing women in swimming pool changing rooms! We have a right to boundaries. And there are advertising standards for a reason.

Atalantea · 06/06/2021 10:35

@CroneAVirus

I completely disagree that it's just showing women as men's play things

Doesn’t fucking matter if it’s showing women as men’s play things, women as women’s play things, men as women’s play things, or men as men’s play things. Children under 16 shouldn’t be exposed to that stuff. And in fact, in any other context, it would be a sexual offence if they were.

Then don't let your children watch TV after the watershed
TorringtonDean · 06/06/2021 10:40

The watershed used to mean maybe a bit of swearing after 9pm - and sex scenes, of course, but not hardcore stuff. This is in another league altogether. I remember it was controversial when there were adverts for sanitary pads with wings! Now we basically have dildos being advertised at prime time. This stuff should be private. Young teens are often around after 9pm. They should still be protected from too much information. Or should Andrex ads show close-ups of bums being wiped?

CounsellorTroi · 06/06/2021 10:44

Back in the 90s/early 00s many car adverts seemed to feature couples. I was watching Pet Rescue on Channel 4, family tea time show about 5.30. During the interval a steamy car ad came on showing a couple getting it on!

TorringtonDean · 06/06/2021 11:08

Funny how when you are an unattractive middle-aged man there is apparently a vast array of nubile young women desperate for your attention if you just flash a credit card. Any any women who question that are prudes. But where are the late-night ads featuring hot blokes who are desperate to meet middle-aged women? There are none! Because (certain third world toy boys aside) the entire thing is about men objectifying women!

how do our young people learn about sex toys and about sex being fun if we don't normalise it in an adult setting? ie after the watershed?

Sex is fun, sex with toys can be more fun....

It's been explained umpteen times. But once again for the hard of thinking. The watershed us 9pm. Anything shown on TV after that may contain adult content. If you let your children watch TV after 9pm you do do understanding that they will be watching adult content. It's literally that simple. I'm all for child-friendly but not to the extent that it becomes adult-unfriendly. The rest of your post just sound like the hysterical rants of a cult leader's wife who is terrified that people will find out that sex can be fun and enjoyed.
Namechangeforthis2021 · 06/06/2021 18:24

@fridgepants

I suspect you're a troll, but hey ho.
? What for sparking a discussion?

So far, all manner of insults -Mary Whitehouse, prude, etc or accusations that my daughters are my little parrots and now I'm a cult leader's wife (lots of sexism with that point -why can't I just be a cult leader in your mind). Or heaven bid we were watching something not on demand and therefore had no idea the advert was coming up. Whitehouse's views I might not agree with -but in 1963 she was an outspoken woman ridiculed for her views. (And no I don't agree with her -but then look what has happened to the media...........)

Ho hum! Lots of people agree, some don't.
Some people say they enjoy dressing up FOR their husbands etc -I found that telling.

My daughter's and my son (for that matter) are brought up to argue, debate, and discuss everything -however during the pottery throwndown -perhaps I didn't word it well -but seriously -??!

I'm not anyone's wife. I don't like porn. Because I don't like the industry. That doesn't make me a bad person, or frigid or anti sex

Interestingly -we were watching Jonny English reborn or something last nights and the girls commented that for his age -JE hooked up with a MUCH younger woman -but would the same have be allowed if the situation was reversed?. That he was 'seduced' by a young woman taking her clothes off. That every woman in MI6 has staggering high heels on -etc and the woman in charge had children running around...... Having said that we thoroughly enjoyed the film.

@Namechangeforthis2021

As I've already said the watershed is 9pm.

But it's different in different countries -did you know that!!??

On another note the Love Honey advert is a feminist issue for me -all the women running around a dressing up for their "men" as well as no hint of LGBTQ+ - I know I will moan about everything!!

If it’s the advert I’m thinking of there are LGBTQ couples, if not the same ad then I do know they have inclusive adverts - I’ve seen them!

There’s a gay couple in the ad, just saying.

Namechangeforthis2021 · 06/06/2021 20:42
@MorganKitten - yes. The advert is indeed inclusive. The OP's posts become less and less credible each time. Plus, it appears she has namechanged to add comments agreeing with her under a different name.
I have not name changed to add supporting comments either!

I agree the Love Honey advert is too much for an advert.

I'm not a prude and wouldn't have a problem with that (or worse) in a TV show at 9.30. But I think adverts should be suitable to be shown at any time of day.

My issue is that the Love Honey advert seems to be on every channel! So if you're family are around and you put the music channel or Sky News or a TV show you know to be "safe", then every few minutes you're presented with people's orgasm faces! I don't think it's suitable.

I don't have any issue with erectile dysfunction adverts. That's like complaining about adverts for sanitary items.

Waspsarearseholes · 06/06/2021 20:44

Ok, sure, Torrington

Snoozer11 · 06/06/2021 20:47

There was a YouTube advert a few months ago that would play all the time.

I can't remember what it was selling - maybe slippers or a blanket or a onesie? And I think it was Australian.

But it started with a woman making screaming sex noises as she was so comfortable using whatever product it was.

Its just not ideal to be listening to music or watching YouTube videos with the sound on and your family in the next room, only for them to hear that, and to think you're watching porn.

Waspsarearseholes · 06/06/2021 20:48

It's really not. The vast majority of teenage girls and women under 50 menstruate. It's a bodily function that happens whether we wish to reproduce or not. Erectile dysfunction affects significantly fewer men and only affects them getting it up. They really aren't the same thing. At all.
