I don't actually think I'm unreasonable though my husband does!

Americans please tell me about your favourite American meal or snack, or even better, both!

Large Asda and Tesco stores that should say.

Figmentofimagination · 28/05/2021 19:12

Reading this list I keep remembering more. Like sour cream and chive pretzels, sloppy joes, churros, crabs legs in butter.

The best burger I ever had was at Margaritaville hotel in Pensacola Florida. Stupidly we'd bought 1 burger to share between 2 of us as we weren't that hungry. I wish I'd had 1 on my own as it tastes amazing and was so juicy!

TheSaucepanMan · 28/05/2021 19:13

@Puzzledandpissedoff

One of the THE best bits about the States is their epic Texas BBQ

Oh, yes ... YES!!!
I never knew what all the fuss was about; after all brisket's just a cheap cut in the UK and nothing special

Then I had it in Texas ...

SO good, have never been able to eat everything but I loved being able to take it away to munch on later.

MinnieJackson · 28/05/2021 19:14

I also want to try the beef baguettes with i THINK it's called French dip? What's corn pone?

HaveringWavering · 28/05/2021 19:15

@WelcometoJam

Nothing beats an ‘egg n’ cheese on a roll’ from an Irish deli in the bronx
I’m intrigued. How do they cook the egg, and what sort of cheese is used?
TheNinny · 28/05/2021 19:15

Funnel cakes
Taco bell
Salted Pretsels at cinema with nacho dip
Massive pickles

tobee · 28/05/2021 19:16

@Cadent

It just all looks fake and full of trans fats.

The Cheesecake Factory was a huge disappointment.

That's half the fun!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/05/2021 19:18

Trader Joe's dried sour cherries or smoked almonds, Chips Ahoy sandwich cookies, fish tacos, Aunt Jemima's Buttermilk Complete pancake mix.

MissConductUS · 28/05/2021 19:18

Trans fats were banned here as a food ingredient in 2018.

giantwaterbottle · 28/05/2021 19:19

Oh wow guys! I was just putting the kids to bed and now finally reading this and I am STARVING! but for some proper American meals now.
Tacos or burritos
Lobster rolls
Biscuits and gravy
Waffles and fried chicken with syrup
Brisket!
Shrimp
Sandwiches from Ike's
Pizza slices
Pretzels the bread ones

I had loads but pretty much everything I know has been mentioned and I am genuinely making a list of the other stuff 🤣

Fried shrimp po’boys are my favourite, and lobster rolls
Oh and those peanut butter chips that are meant for baking into cookies but are very easy to pour straight into your mouth Blush

SeaToSki · 28/05/2021 19:19

Well let me take a spin through my kitchen cupboards (living in New England)

Goldfish
Pretzels
Ruffles chips
Oreos
Craisins
Smores fixings
Fluff (I dont really have it, buts its a thing)
Skippy extra crunchy peanut butter
Newmans Own anything
Trader Joes granola
Frontera taco sauces
Klondike bars
Cinamon buns
Two bite brownies
Crazy spiced nuts
Crazy hot sauces

Proper BBQ - low and slow smoked meat
Mexican
Steak
Pecan pie
Crispy bacon

BUT
I prefer British butter, bread, sausages, Christmas food, scones, chocolate bars and scotch eggs

MissConductUS · 28/05/2021 19:19

The egg is cooked to order but typically fried. Cheddar or American cheese.

ShinyMe · 28/05/2021 19:19
@ShinyMe agree 5th Avenue bars are to die for!
Someone once sent me a case of 50 - YES, FIFTY! - of them for my birthday. I managed to make them last just over a year, it was the best birthday present ever.

akpounce · 28/05/2021 19:20

I have really high opinions of American food - their restaurant meals are really high quality, lots of fresh ingredients, and their salads are wonderful.

I remember many years ago, on holiday in Cape Cod, having scallops and crab for the first time in an absolutely amazing salad. It must have been... 10 years ago? It was during the first Obama election, whenever that was. I was nervous about seafood, but they brought this amazing huge salad with cranberries and scallops and pecans and stuff and oh my god it was perfection.

Ohthatsgreat · 28/05/2021 19:26

I love the liquid coffee creamers in the US. You can’t get them in the U.K. or only in powder form which are not the same.

Had clam chowder in a restaurant in Santa Barbara - fantastic.

San Francisco - went to a food market on one of the piers. Great tacos and dumplings. Everything really fresh and lots of variety.

In New York - bagels and deli foods. Much better coffee options in dunkin and Starbucks than what you get over here too.

MissConductUS · 28/05/2021 19:26

My DH makes a fabulous grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough or ciabatta bread, with sharp cheddar and diced bacon. It's one of our standard dinner items.

And speaking of salads, Cobb salad is my favorite meal salad.

Georgyporky · 28/05/2021 19:29

Chicken in a chlorine dip - yummy.

Oh god yes, clam chowder. The stuff in tins here is not at all the same. I had some amazing stuff on a very rainy day in Salem (same trip as my scallops) - we'd walked damply round the witch places, then gone into this deserted tiny seafront diner with plastic tables, and the chowder was the best thing I'd eaten in years.
BetterThanKleenex · 28/05/2021 19:40

Bleeker Street Pizza and any pizza from Brooklyn. Pastrami sandwiches with thick cut bread and a mountain of Pastrami is the one thing I didn't think I'd like, yet crave it so often.

Also proper coffee from the old coffee shops is the best- most American coffee is shite.

Horehound · 28/05/2021 19:42

@21flora ah I see!
Yes it's deffo not junk food, obviously you can get that anywhere but there is so much good food. I'm actually starving. I'll in bed and waiting ok DH to make the dinner.
I want to be in Americaaaaaaa
