I don't actually think I'm unreasonable though my husband does!

Americans please tell me about your favourite American meal or snack, or even better, both!

Chowder is the king of soups in New England. We used to go on holiday to Block Island, Rhode Island, which is mostly a summer resort, like Cape Cod. The highlight of the summer was the annual chowder competition when a panel of expert local judges would select which restaurant on the island made the best clam chowder.

Legal Seafood is a regional restaurant chain that started in Boston. They make very good clam chowder and they distribute it in refrigerated containers in some supermarkets and warehouse clubs. It's not the best I've ever had, but it's pretty darn delicious.

@TheSaucepanMan

Not a snack but one of the THE best bits about the States is their epic Texas BBQ I could eat that everyday.

YES!

I am Texan so I am a bit impartial.
To be fair, I'm originally from west Texas where the brisket is Mexican-style and very different from Central Texas.
Luckily, I enjoy both.

Brisket cooked low and slow and Cajun food would be what I would miss most when my husband and I retire to the UK in a few years.

American Cheesecake Factory - ALL their cheesecakes!
Can be found in Dubai and Abu Dhabi too - none in UK.

HerRoyalNotness · 28/05/2021 19:55

@znaika

A proper loaded up Mission burrito... Or biscuits and gravy. What sounds rank but is sooo good is collard greens, they are all meaty and vinegary and have no idea how they are cooked to get them to taste like that.
I did collard greens with black eye peas at New Years (a southern tradition) is boiled up with smoked ham hock, so yummy. Hasn’t helped us on the good luck front however, this years been shit Grin

You can get Flamin Hot Cheetos in Spar! And Blue Diamond Almonds in Sainsburys.

tobee · 28/05/2021 19:59

So if I buy brisket here will it be the same thing? (Approximately?)

woofgoesthecat · 28/05/2021 19:59

I miss the Mickey pretzels at Disney. And Panda Express orange chicken. 🙂

bellabride · 28/05/2021 20:00

Here's one that just came on the market in the last two years or so - Tate's Cookies:

www.tatesbakeshop.com/cookies

I having two of her baking cookbooks and make her muffins and brownies regularly. The bagged cookies are a bit pricy but lovely. She doesn't offer the recipe but the rumor is that the trick involves using a food processor to cut cold butter into the cookie dough.

@tobee

Yes and no. It'll be the same cut but grass fed vs. grain fed, which makes an enormous difference in the fat content and texture. It changes the taste significantly.
steff13 · 28/05/2021 20:10

Chicken and waffles with lots of hot sauce and real maple syrup.

tobee · 28/05/2021 20:16

Thanks @gwenneh

choli · 28/05/2021 20:17

horrible milk, fake cheese and rubber bread.
That is a not knowing how or where to shop fail rather than an American food fail.

Mojoj · 28/05/2021 20:17

Reece's anything. Ben and Jerry's

IHOP - The International House of Pancakes

Melt-in-your-mouth, fluffy buttermilk pancakes with a bit of butter and warm maple syrup. Nowhere I have had pancakes matches those and most places in the U.K. that claim they’re serving American-style pancakes are not. I actually struggle going to American-style places in England because it usually tastes like a complete mockery of American food (Don’t get me started on the abomination that is Big Luke’s.) The only place I’ve gone that actually does great American-style food is a barbecue place in High Wycombe called Bluegrass BBQ.

Hot and Spicy crisps since they are actually hot and spicy and make your mouth tingle while being tasty..

American Buttermilk Biscuits (bread) and Dinner Rolls..

American Waffles and Omelettes

Corn Dogs

Funnel Cake

Gooey Butter Cookies (that I don’t have to make)

Butter Pecan Ice Cream!!!

Grilled Chicken snack wraps from McDonalds

Argo Tea (only place I can get many flavours of cold and hot teas) Miss their hot red velvet tea and cold mojitea

GyozaPoser · 28/05/2021 20:19

Every year I haul back snacks/salad dressing/cold meds that do something/uti meds. Why oh why can you not get proper UTI meds here I don't know. I haven't had a UTI in 10 years but I end up giving away loads of the stuff.

Allthegranola · 28/05/2021 20:19

Reese peanut butter cups. Absolutely love them!

GyozaPoser · 28/05/2021 20:21

@phoenixrosehere You need polo bar in london. They do the closest thing to American pancakes I've had here.

VettiyaIruken · 28/05/2021 20:31

We do swap boxes with family members in America and what strikes me is how much sweeter things are than here. The cereals in particular are crazy sweet!

I may have demolished entire packets at a time 😃.

AgeLikeWine · 28/05/2021 20:34

I love cheese flavor crunchy Cheetos. You can get ‘cheetos’ in the U.K., but they’re not the same.

I also love proper brewed unsweetened iced tea in restaurants, and I drink gallons of the stuff when I’m in the US. I tried to duplicate it at home with British tea, but it’s not the same. Too bitter & too tannic.

Worldwide2 · 28/05/2021 20:34

@FVFrog what's a reuben sandwich??

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/05/2021 20:37

Twang beer salt.
My friend brings me it back every year.

TheKeatingFive · 28/05/2021 20:38

Not quite what you’re talking about, but the pepperoni pizza I had in a little non descript restaurant in NY was the best thing I’ve ever eaten in my life.

I still fantasise about it.
