I don't actually think I'm unreasonable though my husband does!

Americans please tell me about your favourite American meal or snack, or even better, both!

Oh and Olive Garden and Chilis. Why have we never had Olive Garden over here?! Their garlic bread is amazing.

Horehound · 28/05/2021 18:12

The brisket served from plastic tray, the chicken wings and an absolutely massive bowl of spicy soup from a Mexican restaurant. Omg it was like the size of a large cooking pan!

Chex mix!!! Love it

VanceRefridgeration · 28/05/2021 18:15

I love mac and cheese as a side but have never quite mastered recreating it at home

Any recipes most welcome 🤤

@HermioneKipper

Mmm all the different flavours of pop tarts! And Oreos - why don’t we have all the flavours here?! Mint m&ms
A few years ago Oreos had a stand on the south bank in London giving out different flavours and asking for feedback. I think there was mint, strawberry cheesecake and a couple of others. I've not seen loads of flavours in the supermarket so assume there wasn't good feedback?

I love deli sandwiches in America, ideally with plain crisps on the side. Somehow they taste so much better than sandwiches here - possibly the sheer volume of filling

Askin4afriend · 28/05/2021 18:16

Honey buns!!!!
Anything grape or apple flavoured

21Flora · 28/05/2021 18:16

I grew up there and my parents still have a lake house we visit. Every time we go I stock up on as many cheezits as I can fit in my case.

We lived in the south so chicken, biscuits and gravy (sawmill gravy). Neighbourhood pig pickins and shrimp boils.

People talking about all the processed food don’t seem to have ventured very far past the tourist areas!

@CurryLover55

I nannied in the US years ago & had the best Chinese takeaway ever! Just tasted so much fresher somehow. Maybe no MSG. And the Mum I worked for used to buy the most delicious cake bars. I ate them straight from the freezer. Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, apple , chocolate. So moreish!
Egg rolls from Chinese takeaways in the US - much nicer than spring rolls. And 100% American rather than Chinese Grin
IndiaMay · 28/05/2021 18:18

Corndogs
Reeces peanut butter cups
Coconut m&ms
Mountain Dew (not the energy version they do in the UK)
Root beer

That's it really. Cannot stand Hershey. It doesnt actually taste of chocolate. American food is all very well but I couldnt survive without marmite, galaxy chocolate, yorkshire puddings and proper bacon!

Billandben444 · 28/05/2021 18:18

Denny's pancakes with whipped butter and maple syrup

chesirecat99 · 28/05/2021 18:19

I think people as the title says snacks, people aren't thinking about American cuisine, just junk food @21Flora!

EKGEMS · 28/05/2021 18:22

@Horehound I grew up in Charleston,SC area and you can imagine the varieties of shrimp and other seafood there-southern dish shrimp and grits for instance

miltonj · 28/05/2021 18:22

My American friend used to make us something called puppy chow. It was amazing!!

If I remember it was shreddies, peanut butter, melted chocolate and icing sugar all shaken up together in a plastic bag. I know what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow Grin

FVFrog · 28/05/2021 18:22

Lived in the US for 6 years....
Spinach dip
Pitta chips
Reuben sandwich
Milky Way dark
Proper bagels
Miracle whip
International delight (for coffee).
Now feeling ‘home’sick....

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 28/05/2021 18:23

Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies. They’re so terrible for you but addictive. Can never ever find them in the U.K. or sites that deliver American snacks though.

FVFrog · 28/05/2021 18:23

Oh and Chex Mix with dark chocolate M&Ms in

21Flora · 28/05/2021 18:24

@chesirecat99 The OP asked about meals and snacks though...

Ooft yeh! Omg I'm so hungry now!!

jay55 · 28/05/2021 18:27

Cornbread

Peanut butter crackers
Peanut butter ritz crackers
Peanut butter pretzel pieces

I'm not usually that big on peanut butter but those are always my jetlag snacks when I visit

LadyEloise · 28/05/2021 18:27

The pancakes at IHOP Blush

EKGEMS · 28/05/2021 18:27

@Horehound lol I am hungry now as well! 🤣

user1471538283 · 28/05/2021 18:28

Artichoke dip. Cornbread. Properly made stuffing. Grilled cheese sandwich and pickles. Cobbler. Fudge cake.

MissConductUS · 28/05/2021 18:29

I'm a New Yorker, so

Bagels and Bialies
Dunkin Donuts
Ghiradelli's chocolates
Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches
Lobster rolls
Pretzel Crisps, preferably with New York cheddar on them

I expect this thread to be removed shortly for being excessively positive about America. Grin

Isn't that the whole premise of tourist areas though? An area becomes a tourist attraction because it meets the needs of what holidaymakers are looking for and that's why other places are left untrodden. That's kinda the whole point in a tourist area!
