@QueenPaw omg where can you get these things?? I’ve been looking up recipes for both and have been planning to make them myself!

GalesThisMorning · 28/05/2021 18:36

@WelcometoJam

Nothing beats an ‘egg n’ cheese on a roll’ from an Irish deli in the bronx
A woman who knows her stuff!! Yes yes yes. I'd add bacon personally for the classic bacon egg n cheese, yum!!

Also:
Everything bagels
Pizza by the slice
Egg rolls
Artichoke dip
Turkey sandwiches from the deli
Concord grapes
Pumpkin bread and hot cider purchased from a farmer's market
Pretzels
Hotdogs with brown mustard
Pastrami on rye
Knishes

Please let America go on the green list so I can go home and get eating!!

Ps - is it totally obvious what state/ city/ region I'm from by my food choices?? Grin

EssentialHummus · 28/05/2021 18:37

Snyders fans - big Sainsbury’s have them, and Sainsbury’s online.

Kraft mac and cheese for me. Nom. Cheezits and anything of that variety.

HermioneKipper · 28/05/2021 18:37

Mmmm the snyders pretzel pieces are delish! Sometimes you can get them at Homesense or TK Max

Dohrehmee · 28/05/2021 18:38

Reeses and anything with peanut butter 😍

MinnieJackson · 28/05/2021 18:40

I've always wanted to try one of the massive doughy pretzels with cheese dip. Also if love to try real homemade southern fried chicken, with all the sides and homemade iced tea. The shrimp look amazing! What are they coated in?

TheSaucepanMan · 28/05/2021 18:41

Not a snack but one of the THE best bits about the States is their epic Texas BBQ I could eat that everyday.

MinnieJackson · 28/05/2021 18:42

Ooh also, could anyone tell me what a bear claw is? And what hush puppies are like?

Rightsaidmabel · 28/05/2021 18:46

Hidden Valley Ranch dressing -purchase on Amazon( never thought I'd say that!)

StevieNix · 28/05/2021 18:49

Biscuits and gravy,
Or my ultimate favourite (which is pure trash really) is Kraft mac and cheese in a box.
I don’t get the hype with ranch dressing though

cakewench · 28/05/2021 18:49

I'm originally from the USA, but it's been a long time since I've lived there now and I feel like my cravings have changed over the years. Grin

Meals I make sure I have when I go home:
-lobster rolls (I grew up in the DC area but spent my summers in New England with my grandparents)
-crab cakes (lump blue crab meat, Baltimore style)
-queso (ok not a meal but something to order at a Mexican restaurant, essentially melted soft cheeses/ Velveeta with hot salsa melted in, a dip)
-pizza, with hot Italian sausage on it among other things. No idea why spicy sausage doesn't exist like that here (I don't mean hard cured sausage like Spanish chorizo. Which is different again to Mexican chorizo, fwiw!)
-salads, where they aren't an afterthought but an actual meal with meat and veg other than lettuce and tinned corn
-fresh corn if in season. Absolutely nothing like corn over here

Snacks if I were ordering from that website:
-Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies. Just do it.
-Flamin' Hot Cheetos. An entirely different animal to the Flamin Hot Wotsits or whatever they have here. NikNak textured and spicier.

I do also bring back troughs of Blue Diamond almonds in various flavours for friends here in the UK, usually Smokehouse flavour but all of them are excellent. (Again, the recipe is different to the UK version. And they're much cheaper there of course)

Oh and I forgot to say: Cinnamon Life! Cinnamon Life! It's a cereal and it's lovely, probably my DS's fave.

MadCattery · 28/05/2021 18:51

@MinnieJackson

Ooh also, could anyone tell me what a bear claw is? And what hush puppies are like?
A bear claw is a flaky pastry filled with almond paste and usually has icing drizzled on it. It’s called a bear claw because of the way it’s cut before baking. Hush Puppies are seasoned, deep fried cornbread based dollops of heaven. Usually, seasoned with onions or corn, rounded and fried. The outside is crispy and the inside is like good cornbread.

Cornbread is best eaten with honey and butter.

StevieNix · 28/05/2021 18:52

Ooo and American deli’s are unreal! I love sliced smoked turkey breast - probably my all time favourite food!

21Flora · 28/05/2021 18:52

@Horehound my point is clearly people saying it’s all rubbish processed junk are wrong and haven’t experienced actual american cuisine. I also don’t see the point in visiting another country and only eating fast food in the most touristy area possible.

It’s like someone visiting Britain and saying British food is rubbish when they’ve only eaten McDonald’s in central London.

Spanglybangles · 28/05/2021 18:52

Coconut M&ms
Chewy caramel M&ms
Mint M&ms
Oreos over there are miles better than ours.
Voodoo chips are THE best crisps ever.
100 Grand bar
Milky Way Midnight
IHOP breakfasts.
Snappers chocolate and salted caramel pretzel bites.
Cheesecake Factory
Takeaway pizza is sooo much better.

Can you tell I have a sweet tooth!! Grin

Flibbitygibbit · 28/05/2021 18:53

I like their scones. And twinkies. Annndddd their yoghurts.

cakewench · 28/05/2021 18:54

Should have said though, don't bother with the chocolate. Dark chocolate bars from Aldi here shit all over anything on offer in the USA.

The reason Hershey's tastes so awful is that it isn't chocolate by the definition used in Europe. It's something like 11% cocoa, and if you didn't grow up eating it, it will taste like vomit to you. Grin

(I did grow up with it and I don't mind it at all, it's a taste of childhood.)
