DH and Laundry Accident

TerribleCustomerCervix · 24/05/2021 16:11

I feel very silly for being so upset about this.

DH pulls his weight round the house, but can be really careless and a bit of a Half a Job Bob at times.

I was emptying the dryer and found my favourite item of clothing in a crinkly ball amongst all the kids stuff.

A dusky pink pair of Lucy and Yak cord dungarees- I fucking love them. They make me feel cool and fashionable and I just feel great in them.

I tried them on once I’d managed to uncrinkle them and it was like trying to step into a condom. They’re out of stock so I can’t replace them.

I’m so (unreasonably?) upset at DH. He’s in a senior management position, smart and capable but somehow won’t or can’t follow washing instructions? He’s very apologetic but I’m fucking RAGING. I know it’s just “stuff” but it’s even the fact that the little 1950s housewife in the back of my brain is saying “Ah sure, at least he’s trying to help.”

RIP dungarees Sad

And I just looked and there are at least 2 different pink dungies on their website. I am guessing you looked already but are either of them close? Grape and Pastel Plum, Baroque Rose

Also bafgled that you can't tumble-dry corduroy but to repeat, what do I know ????

Crockof · 24/05/2021 16:35

trying to step into a condom Grin

Does the average woman have to be told to take care of certain items of clothing when they do a wash? Not in my experience. When I put a wash on, I check the care labels myself. That's what adults do this, we expect so little

UnkindlyMay · 24/05/2021 16:36

@CuriousaboutSamphire

And I suppose you've never had a washing accident? My DH asked me this. And I can honestly say no. I never have. And I started washing clothes when I was about 12 or 13.

I have never shrunk, stained, dyed pink, wrecked or in any way ruined any clothing in a washing machine or tumble dryer.

Oh god, I have. Fairly often. My excuse is that the accidents remain a relatively low proportion of the wash loads achieved.
HarebrightCedarmoon · 24/05/2021 16:36

I don't blame you for being upset, but I've had laundry accidents every now and then.

myfuckingfreezer · 24/05/2021 16:37

I'm guessing it's not these? lucyandyak.com/products/the-organic-original-corduroy-dungarees-in-grape?variant=32420106829927

randomsabreuse · 24/05/2021 16:37

DH once washed my dry clean only wool suit skirt. It more or less survived. None of his stuff is delicate so he had zero clue. I have taken all the washing on because it is way easier for me as I know my own clothes, some things I machine wash despite the label saying not, some things I don't mind dumping in the "dark" wash while others definitely get kept with lights and there's no "obvious" distinction.

He knows not to touch my stuff!

SummaLuvin · 24/05/2021 16:37

@BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand

unless you specifically told him to take care with it

Does the average woman have to be told to take care of certain items of clothing when they do a wash? Not in my experience. When I put a wash on, I check the care labels myself. That's what adults do.

The standards we set for men are shockingly low if we think they can't be expected to do basic tasks without detailed instructions and supervision.

I, an average woman, do have to be told to take care. When I get a new item of clothing I check the label then, and as I don't have a huge amount of clothes I know from memory how to treat them. I don't know my husbands clothing in the same way, which is how I shrank a lovely lambswool jumper of his to literal toddler size about a year ago.

I don't know anyone in my real life who reads every label before washing and every label before drying. Most modern clothing from high street stores, which is where most people buy the bulk of their clothes from have no special care requirements, so people like me don't have much experience with these items. It wasn't until I got a couple of nice cashmere jumpers a few years ago that I had anything which couldn't be bunged in a standard wash and dryer.

otterbaby · 24/05/2021 16:38

How annoying. I just sold my dusky pink only-worn-once Lucy & Yaks as well! There's a page on FB called 'Can I breastfeed in it selling page" and they come up occasionally, might be worth following the page x

FortunesFave · 24/05/2021 16:38

See, even the Googling of "How to unshrink clothes" would make me enraged. It's something a 9 year old would Google. Surely he must know that can't be done!?

MariLwyd · 24/05/2021 16:38

@SimonJT

Are they actually cord or do they just look like cord, as cord doesn’t shrink at high temperatures/in the tumbler. Proper cord should be treated as proper denim, can handle hot washed and tumbling.
Unfortunately despite their popularity Lucy and yak clothes are actually very poor quality! I’m currently wearing a pair of L&Y trousers that I kept because they fit well but they’ve bobbled horribly and go very static despite claiming to be 100% cotton, my L&Y woven dungarees faded from dark charcoal grey to a shade so pale it’s more like off white despite being looked after carefully, I sold my cord ones because they we’re stiff and uncomfortable
Twizbe · 24/05/2021 16:38

It can happen to the best of us. Just the other week I accidentally ruined a wool jumper of husband's in the same way. I do all the washing in our house and it just got lumped in with everything else.

A while ago my cleaner ruined a favourite long tall sally dress of mine by accident. A looked on Facebook and someone was selling the same dress brand new with tags. I got it as I just loved that dress so much.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/05/2021 16:38

L&Y dungarees are well known for shrinking. :(

AnotherKrampus · 24/05/2021 16:39

I'd bloody boil all of his sweaters into tiny felt ones to fit a small teddy bear...

Clymene · 24/05/2021 16:39

Isn't cotton supposed to be pre washed to stop it shrinking? Confused

CombatBarbie · 24/05/2021 16:40

This is precisely why we have a "delicates" basket that he now does not dare touch, but I have lost my shit on more than one occasion when he has topped up a darks with colours to make up the load.... End result is usually something of mine or kids is ruined as majority of his clothes are black/red for working.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 24/05/2021 16:40

They’re the same shape but mine were a lovely dusky rose pink colour.

They were just perfect. 😅

Thank you for everyone giving me sympathy- I realise this is tiny problem in the grand scheme of things but fuck me I’m annoyed!

OP posts:
BonnyandPoppy · 24/05/2021 16:41

You could try rewashing them and then pulling back into shape while wet. Might help.

SimonJT · 24/05/2021 16:41

@FortunesFave

See, even the Googling of "How to unshrink clothes" would make me enraged. It's something a 9 year old would Google. Surely he must know that can't be done!?
You can unshrink some materials, a dilute borax solution and some towels for stuffing will unshrink cashmere, cotton can generally be unshrunk by soaking in dilute fabric softener for an hour or so. I haven’t tried the cotton one but I can confirm the cashmere one works.
LilMidge01 · 24/05/2021 16:42

I'm kinda with @SummaLovin...if I have something that I know needs a special kind of treatment then I keep it separate from the main washing/laundry basket as I wouldnt expect DP to remember all my different clothing treatments (e.g. i wash my running bras in a special bag etc), and if he had something that needed different care, I would expect him to deal with it separately. If it went in a joint/communal laundry basket then YABU a little bit.
It's a honest mistake
Having said that, I dont have a tumble dryer precisely because I couldn't be bothered with all he faffing of what gets hung up and what doesnt..I sort it once before it goes in the washing machine, not sure I wanna do sorting on the other end either

OhGiveUp · 24/05/2021 16:42

It's more likely to be me that ruins stuff in the laundry.
I don't think my DH has ever really forgiven me for accidentally dying his favourite white top a rather fetching shade of pink. 😂

TheFairyCaravan · 24/05/2021 16:42

There’s a few Lucy and Yak selling groups on Facebook. Maybe have a look on there.

SummaLuvin · 24/05/2021 16:42

@CuriousaboutSamphire I check the label when I get a new item of clothing if I suspect it might need special treatment (I don't bother with basic t shirts and stuff). As I don't have a huge amount of clothes and not many at all with special care I remember what is needed to be treated differently and set it aside rather than in the laundry basket. DH does the same with his clothes.

It might be an age thing, I am mid-late twenties, and the clothes I had by the time I was washing them myself at uni they were fairly cheap high street and needed no special care at all. Same with DH. Generally it is more expensive luxurious fabrics that need different care, not the sort of thing I had until the last couple of years.

Arrowheart · 24/05/2021 16:43

Have you never ever accidentally shrunk something or had a colour run OP? Accidents do happen.

SoupDragon · 24/05/2021 16:43

If something can't be washed like everything else, it shouldn't be in the laundry basket. It needs to be separated.
