To ask DH to decorate again (He finished today and I HATE it)

DH has painted our bedroom this weekend. The tester looked nice but now that it's all done I hate it so much I could cry.

We have lovely new bedding and curtains and the walls just spoil it, it doesn't suit the room at all.

I want to go to Homebase tomorrow and paint the whole thing again but I feel TERRIBLE. I'd happily do it myself but I'm pregnant so he didnt want me doing it (Might also explain the crying)

Would I be a total cow to ask him to redo it? I've not confessed that I dont like it yet as he seems pleased and it feels a bit wasteful. Or should I just try and live with it?

If you hate it, you paint it.

Ikeameatballs · 23/05/2021 18:36

Sometimes I think you just get a shock when something is very different to how it’s been. I’d get the carpets down, think about the room as a whole, accessories etc and wait. It will probably grown on you.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 23/05/2021 18:38

Have you put all your furniture back in and seen it in different light at different times of the day?

I paint my sons' bedrooms whatever colour they like, at one time one had acid green, it was ridiculously bright. However, once I put all the furniture back in, hung the curtains it did all come together as the duvet cover was navy blue with an acid green dinosaur skeleton on it which is where the colour came from.

Itgetsthehoseagain · 23/05/2021 18:39

Skirting board colour. Sometimes it all comes down to the skirting board colour.

anotherday235 · 23/05/2021 18:39

It's a pretty inoffensive colour!! Leave it, say you love it and if you still hate it change it in a year or so!!

poppycat10 · 23/05/2021 18:39

I'd leave it a week and if you're still not sure, maybe repaint one of the walls a lighter colour. Just googled the shade and it's quite dark isn't it. I can see why you think "teenage boy". But with the right lighting and accessories it will look lovely.

Alcemeg · 23/05/2021 18:40

He must surely have seen the disappointment in your face. Why let this build a chasm between you? Just admit you hate it, and laugh about it, and say maybe one day it will be a different colour. Mistakes do happen. Flowers

Goodvibesfamily · 23/05/2021 18:41

I'm not laughing at you but I knew you was pregnant before I got to that bit.

I would do something like this not pregnant but he probably wouldn't redo it.

Yanbu though or a cow to ask him. Fingers crossed he will.

SunflowerOwl · 23/05/2021 18:42

Excellent tip @user11838686969686 I will do that in future!

@Flowers500 I would say both too blue and too dark. I'm fine with the pigmentation and the actual paint itself is lovely quality.

My style is usually quite reserved - we have mostly whites/neutrals throughout the rest of the house which is why I fancied something a bit different in the bedroom. The bedding is white and the curtains are too with blue detail. It's not a massive room but faces west so is normally bright from around lunchtime through to sunset.

The doors and built in wardrobes are oak and we have IKEA white drawers at the moment but these are going into the babys room once the carpets are all done and we are just choosing something else, likely pale oak to complement the doors.

YABU but you're pregnant and hormonal so might get away with it

Crunchymum · 23/05/2021 18:42

What colour would you want ir repainted @SunflowerOwl?

Alcemeg · 23/05/2021 18:44

Paint colours are weird. I once painted a whole (large, complicated) room in a sort of mushroom/beige/grey colour that looked oddly violet when finished. It was so vile! I kept going, thinking maybe it would be better on the second coat or in a different light. It wasn't.

Pretty sure the hideousness has not escaped your DH's attention! 😉

Aprilx · 23/05/2021 18:45

It looks like a nice colour, it isn’t fair to ask DH to redecorate it. Lighten the room with your bedding and furnishings, I expect it is something you will get used to.

JassyRadlett · 23/05/2021 18:47

Definitely leave it until you’re no longer pregnant - if you want it changes after that the carpets will be fine, they’re easy to protect (and might affect how it looks?)

My story: when we moved into our house the decor was mad. Seriously super mad. Just one room had picture rail, skirting board and cornicing bubblegum pink, chartreuse and turquoise respectively, paired with a yellow and silver wallpaper feature wall.

About a decade later the former owner showed up on our doorstep having just moved back to the area, and explained that she’d been very pregnant when they decorated and had gone slightly mad. It explained a lot. (And we were so chuffed she’d dropped by, we got closure on WHY THE DECOR.)

Mylittleponysuperfan · 23/05/2021 18:48

We have demin drift in our lounge-I chose the colour, bought it and painted it
I also then hated it
I got a friend round to tell me if it looked crap, knowing she would tell me the truth
She loved it-it took me about a week to be able to say I liked it
A year down the line I love it-it seems to change colour depending on the light
I’d dress it with mustard or hot pink-both look amazing with it

I think the colour you have would work best with blue, otherwise I would consider going a bit lighter and maybe a tad more grey. Lamp room grey, that kind of thing might end up closer to what you had imagined?
Anyoldnameshoulddo · 23/05/2021 18:49

I’ve got a wall of denim drift in my kitchen and I hated it at first. Reminded me of a battleship. I really like it now and have painted other walls. It grows on you!

SpacePotato · 23/05/2021 18:50

Just looked at the colour
It is horrible! Like the colour of misery

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this!

PussInBin20 · 23/05/2021 18:53

I got my DH to repaint our kitchen. Admittedly he had only done a third of it (although our kitchen is quite big). I kept looking at the colour every time I entered the kitchen and ummmed and ahhhh’d over it. Sometimes I thought it was OK and other times I hated it.

In the end we agreed to change it but that was because he didn’t want to go through all the effort for me not to love it.

It was the right thing to do as I immediately felt at ease in the lighter colour.

I know it’s a pain but I would change it if you’re not happy (before the carpets). I would offer to get a painter in to do it though to soften the blow!

MotherOfCrocodiles · 23/05/2021 18:55

If you don't like it you should change it but wait to see how it looks with the carpet first

Benjispruce3 · 23/05/2021 18:55

White might be too stark with it. Try jewel colours for throws and cushions. Think boudoir.

Justwingingit2005 · 23/05/2021 18:55

This was me a yr ago. Wanted something different for the hallway as we had a light grey and kids kept putting finger marks on walls. Saw denim drift, loved it in other people's pictures. Do painted hallway, I hated it. I did leave it a few weeks to see if I changed my mind. I didn't. Three months later we painted over it, took some covering as its quite dark.
My friend has it as a feature wall and looks amazing.
It just didn't suit my house.

TomorrowIsAnotherDae · 23/05/2021 18:56

Next time OP, paint some A4 pieces of paper in the tester colours you like (make sure you write the name of the colour on the back, I learned that the hard way!) then stick the colours on different walls at different times of the day. If you’re shopping for accessories you can take the tester sheets with you.

There are purists who insist that you should always paint testers directly on to the wall, but I disagree. My method has served me well.

I would try and live with the colour for a while first and see how you feel after trying some of the suggestions upthread.

Benjispruce3 · 23/05/2021 18:56

Velvet mustard or rose pink.
