Is three bottles of wine a week too much?

My husband, not me. Since I've been pregnant, so abstaining from drink altogether, I've been more aware of his drinking. It's by no means a problem judging by his behaviour but I just wondered if this is (obviously a bit unhealthy) but normal for some. It's spread out over the week so he doesn't binge at weekends.

I think it's too much but I suppose it's what you're used to having. I have one glass of wine a week - used to be married to an alcoholic so this gave me a very dim view of alcohol.

notanothertakeaway · 26/05/2021 07:49

All these people saying "I drink that much and I'm fine", how do you KNOW that you are fine and alcohol has not / will not affect your health?

I drink 3 bottles per week, not proud pf it, trying to cut down, but i don't kid myself i kjnow better than the experts

Have you read 'alcohol lied to me?'

Made me stop drinking over night

sadperson16 · 26/05/2021 10:01

I think a lot of medics drink heavily. Those fools running the country are sloshed or on coke.

PaperbackRider · 26/05/2021 10:04

Would you want your surgeon drinking half a bottle every night? Your pilot, your teacher, your lorry / train / bus driver, your paramedic? Your lawyer, your financial adviser?

None of my business, but I expect an awful lot of them do. I've been drinking with surgeons, half a bottle of wine would be one of many drinks!

It is your business if your surgeon is hungover and performing surgery on you!

Fuck sake this thread is hilarious

PaperbackRider · 26/05/2021 10:28

Have you met any surgeons?

PurpleDaisies · 26/05/2021 10:33

Obviously, but regularly drinking half a bottle of wine doesn’t necessarily give you a hangover or particularly impair your work performance. That doesn’t mean it’s a healthy level to drink at.

Unfortunately, many!

Socially, one or two

It does impair though.

It doesn't though. Half a bottle of wine doesn't give me, or many (most?) people a hangover or any impairment the next day.

PurpleDaisies · 26/05/2021 10:44

Half a bottle of wine hours later? Really?

That you can tell. But your brain function will still be altered
facemaskhate · 26/05/2021 10:53

@PaperbackRider @PurpleDaisies

Do you even know which receptors alcohol works on in the brain?

Yes.

I have to be honest and say 1/2 a bottle seriously impairs me. I'm fit for nothing next day if I have more than two very small glasses.
PurpleDaisies · 26/05/2021 11:49

Presumably you’re not drinking that regularly though @Cowbells? People do build up a tolerance.

I’m worried that my posts are advocating for this level of drinking-I’m really not but my point is there are functional alcoholics (or people who drink too much if they’re not alcoholics) who don’t experience any sort of hangover the next day. Trying to argue people much cut down because it impairs their work is a poor strategy because for many it doesn’t.

I get what you are saying @PurpleDaisies and don't think you are advocating for it. No, I don't drink 1/2 bottle regularly.

What shocked me though was that during Dry Jan I had a massive increase of energy in the evenings, from stopping drinking a single glass at night. That should have been an incentive, really...

Lweji · 26/05/2021 12:06

Well done, OP, for kickstarting this thread.

As the effect of alcohol depends on how many units are taken in one go, as well as over time, the whole discussion here is fruitless, and somewhat silly IMO, if we don't know how much he drinks and when.

A glass with every meal is not the same as half a bottle, or even a whole bottle later in the evening, well after dinner with no food or other drinks.

Tolerance is dependence by another name
PaperbackRider · 26/05/2021 12:53

No it isn't.

facemaskhate · 26/05/2021 12:59

@PaperbackRider

No it isn't.
It's a massive factor in people developing dependence
PurpleDaisies · 26/05/2021 13:15

Tolerance can lead to dependence but that doesn’t mean they’re the same thing.

CaptainCabinets · 26/05/2021 13:30

Mm, I’d probably refer him to our inpatient drug and alcohol nurse if I admitted him to my ward and he reported that he drank 30units/wk when I did his admission questionnaire. 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is hilarious. I know lots of medics and surgeons socially and all of them drink more than 30 units per week. Not saying it's good, but it's true.
