Is three bottles of wine a week too much?

My husband, not me. Since I've been pregnant, so abstaining from drink altogether, I've been more aware of his drinking. It's by no means a problem judging by his behaviour but I just wondered if this is (obviously a bit unhealthy) but normal for some. It's spread out over the week so he doesn't binge at weekends.

I also think too much. 14 units a week is recommended and fairly generous I think for a regularly basis - it’s about a bottle and a half depending on the percentage. 3 bottles is double.

Coldwine75 · 25/05/2021 22:49

My parents are in their 70;s and definately have wine every evening, they have no health problems whatsoever.

Pinkylemons · 25/05/2021 22:50

Yes it’s too much.

Coldwine75 · 25/05/2021 22:57

@ThursdayWeld

Your point, as I read it, was that anything non-poisonous (such as water) can poison you if taken in sufficient amounts.

My point is that ethanol is an actual poison.

It isnt a poison.
billy1966 · 25/05/2021 23:01

@Slippy78

That's just under 2 large glasses Nope, it's just over 1.

1.5 bottles a week should be the max
and even then that would work out at one big glass a day.
Nope, that's less than a small glass per day.

Where do you guys get your measurements from? A small glass is 125ml, a standard is 175ml and a large is 250ml.

This.

The critical thing is his liver needs a rest minimum 3 days a week.
4 is better again.

Coldwine75 · 25/05/2021 23:03

I know many not giving their liver 'a rest' and are fine, its all down to genetics who it healthier and who lives longer.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 25/05/2021 23:07

That's utter bollocks. If longevity was 100% genetics then there would be no difference in average lifespans when you look at different socio-economic groups. But there are huge differences.

Socio-economic class, diet, the type of work you do, exposure to pollution, how much you exercise, stress levels, weight etc. all play just as much part as genetics. Oh, and how much alcohol you drink!

Why are you trying to deny it?

Coldwine75 · 25/05/2021 23:10

Exactly, many different factors as well as alcohol, but narrow minded idiots on here think its all about the 14 units, what about everything else in life?

ineedaholidaynow · 25/05/2021 23:18

But shouldn't you have everything in moderation. I also thought you were meant to give your liver a rest, so not having a glass or 2 of wine every day. Also not a good idea to be reliant on alcohol to help you relax

Should you have cigarettes in moderation?

To be fair, that interesting study that @rubberplants kindly linked to shows quite clearly that risks of death/disability increase with daily alcohol units consumed. And yes they factored in the protective effects too

In 2016, alcohol use led to 2·8 million deaths and was the leading risk factor for premature death and disability among people aged 15–49 years, with nearly 9% of all attributable DALYs for men and more than 2% for women. Our findings indicate that alcohol use was associated with far more health loss for males than for females, with the attributable burden for men around three times higher than that for women in 2016. By evaluating all associated relative risks for alcohol use, we found that consuming zero standard drinks daily minimises the overall risk to health.

So you can continue to argue and deny but I'm unconvinced that your biased personal opinion outweighs actual evidence

Coldwine75 · 25/05/2021 23:30

Well many friends and family drink wine daily and we are all fine , so not bothered !

ineedaholidaynow · 25/05/2021 23:35

Some people don't wear seatbelts and haven't died in a car crash, does that mean it is safe not to wear a seatbelt.

Coldwine75 · 25/05/2021 23:36

Bit different, dont be so stupid

ineedaholidaynow · 25/05/2021 23:40

For someone who finds drinking relaxing, you don’t sound very relaxed @Coldwine75

Coldwine75 · 25/05/2021 23:40

Ooooh im very relaxed thanks!

In what way is your anecdotal personal experience different to any other anecdotal personal experience?

What makes your personal experience more reliable than science?

Justgorgeous · 25/05/2021 23:43

12 bottles of wine a month is more than I have in a year or more. I drink very little. Alcohol to me is a dangerous substance and totally glamorised in the media. Luckily my husband is the same.

PurpleDaisies · 25/05/2021 23:48

Everyone knows a smoker who lived to 90 and didn’t get lung cancer. That doesn’t mean cigarettes don’t increase your risk of that happening. Exactly the same for drinking. If you consistently drink too much, that increases your risk of certain problems. That doesn’t mean every single person who drinks too much will get them. You just don’t know if you’ll be lucky or not.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 26/05/2021 07:07

Yes, I find a bit of cyanide in moderation does me the world of good!

Moderate drinking is better than heavy drinking, just like moderate smoking is better than heavy smoking, and moderate drug use is better than heavy drug use. But these things are all basically poisons. Ingesting no poison at all is better than doing so in moderation.

I drink myself, but I'm not blind to the fact that it's bad for me. I find the denial on here utterly insane.

DotBall · 26/05/2021 07:18

Would you want your surgeon drinking half a bottle every night? Your pilot, your teacher, your lorry / train / bus driver, your paramedic? Your lawyer, your financial adviser?

I wouldn’t want anyone who might compromise my safety or security drinking a significant amount every single day, because it’s excessive, no matter what the MN ‘it’s normal’ brigade shout. It’s not.

cocoloco987 · 26/05/2021 07:20

I'm surprised you think any of those people aren't doing this @DotBall . My old school run used to take us along a very wealthy street where the occupants tend to have high profile important jobs. The glass bins in recycling days were eye opening.

Those types of profession tend to have higher rates of alcoholism than average. Lots of doctors are high functioning alcoholics.

You're about 46 years old? So I suspect in around 5-10 years your chickens will come home to roost if you continue your denialathon

Yes the recycling bins around here are very interesting! (Putney)
