Menopause / or Did your periods change after Covid vaccine?

I'm 51 and last had a period more than 2 years ago. After my Covid vaccine in Feb, my periods 'started again'.

It looks like there are quite a few post-menopausal women who have had the same, and some non-menopausal women who've had their menstrual cycles go awry.

If this applies to you, please do contact your GP for advise and/or to register your experience.

It's not necessarily a problem, but women do
Often accept situations that could do with being explored in more detail, so please do make your experience count if you can.

I previously posted on here saying this time I am due on my boobs are extremely painful which is absolutely not like me, I don’t get boob pain only when pregnant and not like this! To add to it I have had an awful weekend with feeling so down, really bad pms, it’s like a super period and I haven’t come on yet, not due on until 27th! Another 4 days of feeling like this. I can only think it’s something to do with the vaccine, I haven’t been right cycle wise since I had it, dp agrees, it was actually him that first thought it.

Sunbird24 · 24/05/2021 12:11

Mine started this morning, 7 days early. Never did ovulate

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/05/2021 12:13

I reported too. Its a bit annoying but I always get side effects.

WaverleyPirate · 24/05/2021 21:06

Well, I've been given immediate referral by doctor to specialists.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 24/05/2021 21:45

@WaverleyPirate

That's really good news that you're being checked out.

How are you feeling?

OP posts:
Wobblysausage · 24/05/2021 21:53

Yes. I have heavy painful periods anyway as I have endometriosis but the past 3 periods since having my vaccine have been unbearable! At one point I was on all fours panting like I was in labour. I actually wondered if I was one those women who was pregnant and didn’t know and I expected a baby to come out. I was ready to phone an ambulance but luckily it subsided. Now I’ve seen lots of women mention a change in their periods after the vaccine and it explains why mine have been so awful!

WaverleyPirate · 24/05/2021 22:02

Feeling fine. I didn't even have to ask for referral. Doctor rang back same day and said he wanted me seen ASAP.

I did raise vaccine but he obviously hadn't heard of any link. I still reckon it is linked but best to rule out anything more nasty.

WaverleyPirate · 24/05/2021 22:04

And if it is nasty you may have just saved my life! So thank you for your help.

achara · 24/05/2021 22:12

I am so glad I saw this thread. I am 53. I was on mini pill up to last October. Rarely had a period while on it. Dr would do bloods every year and then said last Oct it was OK to come off it. Had a very light mostly spotting period just after finishing and nothing since.
Had Pfizer vaccine last Wednesday and today have full on proper period. I didn't link it to the vaccine but after reading this it would make you wonder!
Also thank you for the advice. I was thinking it was just one of those things and going to do nothing but I am definitely going to the doctor tomorrow.
Hopefully it will be nothing to worry about.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 24/05/2021 22:18

Blimey, @Wobblysausage - that sounds HORRENDOUS. You poor, poor thing.
God, I hope your next one is a walk in the park xxx

Following with interest. If it does affect periods then how do the vaccines not affect fertility? This angers me so much.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 24/05/2021 22:22

Well very good luck, @WaverleyPirate .

I had same experience as you, had blood tests and an ultrasound scan which all came back clear.

it was also good to get onto the books of the consultant as she recommended & agreed to prescribe HRT which I hadn't considered before.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

@achara

That's a good idea - getting yourself checked out properly is a priority, I think.

So easy to brush things off.

@DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo thank you so much. I will definitely get checked out. It feels like a sign that I saw this thread. Good luck to everyone

Yes! Had Moderna and, having previously been on a 4 week cycle I have had a 6 week and two 3 week cycles and longer bleeding.

What a pain - so annoying when things go awry unexpectedly.

Hope things settle down ASAP.

@Roonerspismed - you're absolutely right. For me, being post-menopause, it was a scare until I got checked out and the all clear.

For those trying to conceive and/or having fertility treatment, it could be a real longer term issue.

LakieLady · 25/05/2021 20:56

I've had both vax (Pfizer) and had no side effects bar a slightly sore arm for a few hours.

I'm approx 12 years post-menopause though, so it's been a long time!

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 25/05/2021 21:23

That would have been quite a shock @LakieLady !

Glad all was well x

@FluWorldOrder

I’ve read literally thousands of accounts of this happening, including women in their 70s having bleeds, so you’re definitely not alone. Lots of unvaccinated women are also experiencing this just by being around people who are already vaccinated.
I’m going to be less polite than so,e. Utter, unmitigated shit. Milki9ns of women have been vaccinated. Millions of women would have had changes in their menstrual cycle because nobody is immune from occasional weirdness. There is no connection between the two, particularly certainly for women who haven’t even had the vaccine.
cardibach · 25/05/2021 21:34

@ChaToilLeam

I’m 50 and had the Astra Zeneca 1st dose a week ago. Perimenopausal and periods have been irregular and scant for the last year. Day after vaccine, the PERIOD FROM HELL began. Flooding, intense cramping, one week on it’s still going strong. Even with doubled sanpro I leaked through clothing. I have no doubt the vaccine set it off. Better that than Covid but it isn’t much fun.
One day after it can’t be connected. It takes more than a day to make the lining, never mind to make and shed it.
