Menopause / or Did your periods change after Covid vaccine?

I'm 51 and last had a period more than 2 years ago. After my Covid vaccine in Feb, my periods 'started again'.

It looks like there are quite a few post-menopausal women who have had the same, and some non-menopausal women who've had their menstrual cycles go awry.

If this applies to you, please do contact your GP for advise and/or to register your experience.

It's not necessarily a problem, but women do
Often accept situations that could do with being explored in more detail, so please do make your experience count if you can.

Hahahaha oh dear.

@BlatantlyNameChanged

OP, have you spoken to your GP? It's not immediately clear if you have or not but any bleeding in a postmenopausal woman should be urgently referred to the hospital under the two-week wait process as, while the cause may well turn out to be something simple, it can be a sign of cancer and needs to be investigated.

Hi @BlatantlyNameChanged

Good to mention, and yes, I have.
You're completely right - any post-menopausal bleeding needs checking out without delay.

I had a scan and all was clear, thank goodness.

My auntie who is in her mid 50s and has not had a period for years, had the longest, heaviest period she has ever had, after the vaccine.

Not an anecdote. Truth

BlatantlyNameChanged · 21/05/2021 23:02

Sorry for being that poster who did the "see a GP" thing but it felt important enough to mention, I'm glad everything was clear.

ihavethehighground · 21/05/2021 23:03

Mine stopped in first lockdown haven't returned

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 21/05/2021 23:03

@SoupDragon

I've had one dose and it made no difference whatsoever. I'd kind of hoped I might miss one like many had reported.

That is a bummer!!

You can imagine how it feels to have started again after more than two years 😡😡😡😡!!

Agree with a PP - anyone who bleeds after the menopause must get it checked out, please don't just assume it's the vaccine!

Rabbitheadlights · 21/05/2021 23:04

@blatantlynamechanged don't be sorry for being "that poster" you may just make the difference.

Not at all, you are completely right to spell it out, and I guess that's another risk - people thinking that any unexplained / unusual bleeding is 'just a vaccine side effect'.

And if your GP tries to fob you off by saying its the vaccine don't accept it, insist on the referral as per NHS protocol.

Rabbitheadlights · 21/05/2021 23:06

@ihavethehighground were you peri beforehand? Have you spoken to the GP?

pipsqueakbollock · 21/05/2021 23:06

Shit. I got a breast cyst out of nowhere after Pfizer #1

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 21/05/2021 23:07

As per @BlatantlyNameChanged - any post-menopause bleeding MUST be checked out and there is a 'within 2 weeks' timeline. So pls do insist if you experience this.

43 - everything as normal. Unfortunately! Would be quite happy to have no period!

Had the vaccine, nothing changed with my menopause, still annoying as hell.

I completely agree, @Rabbitheadlights - sharing experience around Women's Health could make a real difference.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/05/2021 23:17

I’m on the mini pill so don’t generally have periods, but did after the vaccine.

jay55 · 21/05/2021 23:17

I was due when I had the first jab, it's finally arrived on day 52 of my cycle, and heavy.

I'm usually very regular, I was hopeful it was gone for good.

BlatantlyNameChanged · 21/05/2021 23:17

I'm at the same stage as you @SoupDragon, I'm done having DC so now it's all just a monthly inconvenience.

As I understand it, the lining of your womb is part of your immune system. It's designed to help guard your uterus from infections and bacteria which is why the fertilised egg implants there to keep it safe while it develops. If you have an immune response to the vaccine then it can cause inflammation of the structures and systems in your immune system, including the endometrium, which can cause temporary period changes (or restarts). The actual science is probably way more science-y than that but that's the gist of my grasp on it.

Rabbitheadlights · 21/05/2021 23:20

@blatantlynamechanged that's pretty much what my GP said.

BarbarianMum · 21/05/2021 23:21

Nope exactly the opposite. Covid set me skipping periods and the vaccine seems to have stopped them altogether. Now eligible for hrt Smile
