I HATE my wedding dress

xela21 · 19/05/2021 16:38

I'm getting married next month, my dress has arrived and I hate it. I need to find a new one and fast. Please help?

I have toyed with the idea of non-white dresses, at this rate I'm open to anything. Ideally wanted a midi length pale dress that doesn't look like a bridesmaid dress (The one I have bought is blush and floaty and bridesmaidy). :( :(

Sorry, nrtt in detail, but I got married in a pale silver grey dress I already had in my wardrobe before I got married as I hated the one I’d ordered.
Have you any other options available to you??

hitsvilleuk · 19/05/2021 22:06

That Ghost dress is flattering - my daughter wore it in a darker colour as a bridesmaid ( you can wear it back to front as well and it also looks good) It hangs really well.
They stock them in quite a few places so you could try it on even if its not the right colour and then order on line
Also sometimes you can get them on offer

Personally think any dress that isn't white looks bridesmaidy unless a ballgown. If you want fast and cheap Chi Chi London do some great wedding dresses

RoSEbuds6 · 19/05/2021 22:24

Since seeing the eBay links to the ghost dress I worry that the dress would crease really badly. Maybe pp who have worn similar could comment...

Ladybirdlashes · 19/05/2021 22:25

Have a look at these if you don’t want white, I feel like they still look quite bridal because of the shoulders...

Thanks everyone re: ebay issues! I only bidded £25 so hopefully nothing will come of it.

To those who have posted new suggestions - thank you! I don't like the idea of sequins/beads/pearls etc though . I thought I liked lace but the one I ordered just looked cheap. Hence I am now torn between the Ghost and Adrianna Pepell (SilkFred) which I have just found both on John Lewis - will try to make a trip ASAP.

I am just a little concerned about the fit of Ghost - 1) too clingy? 2) too long? I'm only 5'4! 3) have a small torso/long legs and worry the it might not sit right on me - read a review that said the top bit was not sinched at the waist but rather at the level of the hips on someone.

I may possibly to edging towards AP but my concern with this is if it looks more like an evening gown rather than a bridal dress!

I really think that you would be unwise to order any dress without having first seen it in real life and tried it on.

Do you have a John Lewis anywhere near to where you live OP?

xela21 · 19/05/2021 22:33

@rosegoldwatcher Yes I do, I will be making a trip ASAP. In fact, I might phone up tomorrow morning to ask if they have any of the dresses in stock (any colour) just to try.

I have just spotted this: www.houseoffraser.co.uk/brand/adrianna-papell/adrianna-papell-glitter-knit-gown-662518#colcode=66251810

Is this too evening-y and not wedding enough?
I'm warming to gold more than silver I think...

...or indeed House of Fraser?

Those two Biba dresses, tagged by @Missymare are quite something!

Dora33 · 19/05/2021 22:34

I really liked the ghost dress but this dress would be the one I would go for. It gives a good shape & looks comfortable. It would look stunning on any bride., especially with hair, makeup & flowers.
.What ever colour you decide on, ask guests not to wear dresses in same colour.

rosegoldwatcher · 19/05/2021 22:35

The twisted front on the glitter knit gown makes it quite frumpy IMO.

Dora33 · 19/05/2021 22:36

That's the frockandfrill dress linked above

JimBobNoJob · 19/05/2021 22:40

I actually really like your original dress and don’t think it looks too bridesmaidy. My son got married a couple of weeks ago and my Dil wore a blush dress.
But if you really don’t like it, I’ve just looked on th chi chi website that @MrsMiddleMother linked and there are some lovely dresses on there and reasonably priced too.

Poppins2016 · 19/05/2021 22:49

Have you looked at Monsoon's bridesmaid collection? They have some lovely dresses that seem to fit your specification.

howtocomplain · 19/05/2021 23:02

I've just looked at all the links you've shared and you've got really good taste, whichever you choose, you're going to look stunning.

I'm an experienced last minute buyer! (ADHD, crap at organising stuff, fucking great in a crisis).

OK, so a month is plenty of time. First of all, take a deep breath, this is going to be fine. (See good taste comment above!).

What you don't have time for is buying one outfit, trying it on and sending it back, then ordering a new one. You need to order at least 3 you like, try them on, choose the one you love and send the rest back.

Have you got PayPal? If money is an issue at all, that's really useful for buying things to try on at home. If it gives you the option of Pay in 3, go for that, then you only need to pay a third of the price, try it on, and then you can return it if you don't want it, before a huge chunk of money comes out of your account.

Also, women are still wearing white because it's a fashion started by Queen Victoria. www.vanityfair.com/style/2018/04/queen-victoria-royal-wedding

You say you're an atheist, I'm going to hazard a guess you're not a royalist either?

The dresses you've linked are lovely, but don't feel you have to stick to pale stuff. Women used to get married in their best dress, it didn't have to be while or pale.

I love this £245. Reminds me of Bridgerton.

AGirlCalledJohnny · 19/05/2021 23:10

^sorry about the links, thought I’d converted them :-/

@xela21

Wow, thanks so much everyone for your suggestions!

I wish they did this ghost dress in gold/champagne : www.ghost.co.uk/claudia_dress_silver_lake-ds38ca-b37
Do we think it is bridal enough in silver?

Is this too dark to be bridal? www.silkfred.com/boutiques/adrianna-papell/clothing/metallic-pleated-gown-in-champagne

I think champage/gold is definitely the answer, I'm slightly less insistent on the midi length now though (what colour shoes would you pair with a pale gold dress?)

The Ghost one is gorgeous. I think silver is absolutely fine for a wedding.
