Are people who are going on holiday this year selfish?

Just saw a big row unfold on my FB feed because someone posted they've had their vaccinations and can't wait to go on holiday and they quite a few negative responses calling them selfish 🙈. I just wondered what others thought?

its each persons choice, as long as they follow all quarantine/self isolation then its up to them

No.

“Selfish” has become the insult du jour. Fortunately, I’m well aware that I’m selfish and so being called it doesn’t bother me. Broadly, yes - people going on holiday are thinking primarily of their own well-being / enjoyment / desire to see family rather than whether or not international travel generally might be a good idea this year. And that’s fine. We’re all selfish quite a lot of the time about varying things.

malificent7 · 19/05/2021 10:31

If they have had the vaccine can they still spread Covid? If not, what is the problem?

ineedaholidayandwine · 19/05/2021 10:34

@chipsandpeas

^ Totally agree with this
Odagled · 19/05/2021 10:34

The word “selfish” has been lobbed around so much in the last 12 months it’s almost lost it’s meaning. I must have missed the day when we all became altruistic saints, all doing stuff for the greater good.

No, going on holiday isn’t selfish (and no, I don’t have one booked myself).

LesLavandes · 19/05/2021 10:37

It's 'wait and see' for me. It won't be before September and would be booked at last minute, all depends on the situation at the time.

Plumbear2 · 19/05/2021 10:38

Yes it is. Apart from bringing new variants back they could also take new variants to where ever they are going.

Sleepthief · 19/05/2021 10:41

That's what Bodge and co want you to think, so it distracts you from their cock-ups 🙄

Sallycinnamum · 19/05/2021 10:42

Well looking at the long term summer forecast, which looks dire, we'll be going abroad to Europe if we can.

Lots of insurance companies are offering covid cover and we will have all the requisite tests and quarantine etc.

Overthebow · 19/05/2021 10:44

No, as long as they follow all the UKs quarantining and testing requirements then people are free to do what they like.

C00lChat405 · 19/05/2021 10:46

To holiday in their home country or abroad ?

I don't work in the NHS, but if I had spent the last year covered in PPE for 12 hour shifts & caring for sick people. I would think that a holiday would be a welcome break. As long as they have travel insurance & are aware that lockdowns may occur at short notice

Horst · 19/05/2021 10:47

I think if you are travelling aboard then regardless of the rules you should really self isolate upon returning.

AIMummy · 19/05/2021 10:47

No, it's not illegal and you could argue that they are helping the Travel sector. If some airlines, particularly budget ones go bust, we all lose out. Either the government helps them out financially or they allow guilt-free travel (not the confusing messages they're giving right now).

AIMummy · 19/05/2021 10:49

*obviously by following all the rules and taking the required tests.

C00lChat405 · 19/05/2021 10:50

I have holidays booked in Uk

CharlotteRose90 · 19/05/2021 10:50

As long as you follow the rules for that country then I don’t find it selfish at all. It’s been a horrific year and for some people a holiday is well needed. I’ve booked 2 holidays and I’d like to take atleast 1 . I need the break and some sunshine.

Vallmo47 · 19/05/2021 10:50

I honestly wish all people would just mind their own business. And no I haven’t got anything booked. I’ve done sweet f a for well over a year to protect my loved ones and it’s beginning to take a toll on everyone’s mental health. So I just run my own race and keep my beak out.

EvilPea · 19/05/2021 10:52

I think the selfish ones are the ones who have double booked holidays (so one uk, one abroad) like on bbc this morning.

Either way it’s messing someone about. Holiday firms have had a hard enough year without people doing that to them. A lot of these are small hotels, family run just trying to do their best.

Youdoyoutoday · 19/05/2021 10:52

I'd love to go on holiday to a private, self catering villa with a pool but I don't want to travel through airports or sit on a plane with recycled air so I'm not going and said that at the beginning of this year before this new variant reared up.

I'm going to sit back and see what happens with the numbers first now that people are mixing more, but again, my choice, I wouldn't start a slanging match with someone over it.

Flyonawalk · 19/05/2021 10:57

Personal choice.

TheatricalGiraffe · 19/05/2021 10:58

I don't think it's selfish as long as they get the required tests and quarantine accordingly (if required) when they get home BUT I do think people don't have the right to moan if they decide to risk going on holiday to a place on the green list which then changes to amber or red (As happened quite a lot last year) ...

Greysofa · 19/05/2021 10:58

No. Some people have worked throughout Covid, dealing with the stresses of home schooling, family illness and deaths all whilst providing a frontline service putting themselves at risk at the height of the pandemic in order to safeguard others. A week or 2 in guaranteed sunshine allows a bit of proper rest and recuperation. The only proviso would be that the current rules regarding quarantine are followed for whichever country you may go to.

leafinthewind · 19/05/2021 10:58

Bit optimistic, maybe...

LittleTiger007 · 19/05/2021 11:00

I don’t think they are selfish, just maybe unwise and overly optimistic. Holidays may be cancelled, money wasted and hopes dashed.
