Are people who are going on holiday this year selfish?

Meltinthemiddle · 19/05/2021 10:25

Just saw a big row unfold on my FB feed because someone posted they've had their vaccinations and can't wait to go on holiday and they quite a few negative responses calling them selfish 🙈. I just wondered what others thought?

OP posts:
stopgap · 19/05/2021 14:48

Nope. I went to the Bahamas in April (I’m in the US) after one dose of the vaccine. We double-masked on the plane, did testing, and ate outdoors only. It was absolutely fine.

My parents (in the UK) are supposed to come and see me in August. If that doesn’t work, and we need to meet in a neutral country, then that’s what we will do. I did not see them all of 2020, and no way am I not seeing them all of 2021 if I can help it. We are all double-vaccinated at this point, and the current case rate in my state is 5 per 100k and it’s been this way for a couple of months. Masks are off inside and we are essentially back to a normal life.

just for that you should be banned from the site.

Meanwhile, the usual martyrs are trying to convince us to have "staycations" in the UK! Grin

motogogo · 19/05/2021 14:53

Nobody's business but theirs! If you want to go on holiday have fun!

MasterBeth · 19/05/2021 14:56
@MasterBeth I’ve not been on holiday either within or out with the U.K. for almost 5 years, so you might want to rethink your me needing the sunshine comment Hmm not a holiday person personally. But at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter if anyone is selfish or not. They’re still people who have made their choices and flogging them with insults isn’t going to make them realise that they’re putting others at risk and prolonging the pandemic. They simply don’t care, they’re aware of the risks and aware of the dangers but they still choose to put themselves first so it doesn’t matter if people are selfish, it matters what you choose to do and how you choose to keep yourself safe.
@confusedadultfemale Sorry, I didn’t mean “you” personally, just anyone who chooses to go abroad right now. It’s entirely their own selfish choice.

Morgan12 · 19/05/2021 14:59

Personally I do think people should have stuck to starcations this year. But it's the government's fault for allowing it.

BluebellCockleshell123 · 19/05/2021 15:07

Nope not selfish. As long as they stick with the quarantine & testing rules then I don’t see what the problem is.

If holidays are “allowed” then you can’t expect people not to go on them.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 19/05/2021 15:11

Yes, I think we are. I say 'we' because I'm one of them - I'll be going to an amber country soon if I'm legally allowed. I know that it's better for all of us if we all stay in our own countries, but it's better for me (and for my mum, who I'm taking) to get a break and some sunshine. It's a selfish decision.

I'm not proud of it but not am I particularly ashamed. I've reached breaking point and decided, rightly or wrongly, that I'm okay with being selfish on this occasion.

Mowzy · 19/05/2021 15:14

Are people that choose to go to the pub selfish?

How about people going to the hairdressers or shopping for non essential items?

Or people who chose to conceive a child and give birth since last March, adding to the strain on the NHS?

Or people who want to put their child in nursery or attend playgroups but do not need them for childcare?

Or people who go to the beach/park and get take away food and coffee?

Most things people want to do are partly selfish/what they feel they need or want to do for their well-being.

Needanewhat · 19/05/2021 15:15

I think it's hugely inadvisable to go on holiday abroad this year, but I don't really think you can call people selfish when the government has allowed it.

HelpMeh · 19/05/2021 15:16

If people follow the required testing and quarantine rules then it's no more selfish than going to Sainsburys in my opinion 🤷‍♀️

What I object to is the government devising the concept of green, amber, red then constantly telling people they shouldn't go to amber destinations! Throughout this pandemic they've tried to dump responsibility for any potential failings onto the general public. If they only wanted red and green then that's what they should've implemented.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 19/05/2021 15:16

Selfish? Maybe. Maybe not.
I just have no idea why anyone would want to go this year to another country with lower rates of vaccination and potentially higher or unknown rates of infection (travelling there in a sealed tube with 200 strangers). It just seems an unnecessary risk at the moment.

Branleuse · 19/05/2021 15:20

Im not sure that going on holiday can ever be described as a selfless thing to do. Its all about whether you need to relax and get away from things and what that looks like to you. Its neither selfish or selfless.

A lot of people never envisioned this lasting so long. Ive now cancelled 3 holidays since covid, and if i can get away this year I damn well will, as this might never be really over, and I honestly cant, for the life of me see why going to france would be selfish, yet going to cornwall etc isnt

LemmysAceCard · 19/05/2021 15:20

@Plumbear2

Yes it is. Apart from bringing new variants back they could also take new variants to where ever they are going.
But OP hasnt said that they have booked anywhere.

I have had one vaccine and cant wait to go on holiday. But it wont be till next year at the earliest.

Nothing wrong with saying you cant wait to go on holiday, doesnt mean you have the TUI page open as you type and booking something.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 19/05/2021 15:28

*Im not sure that going on holiday can ever be described as a selfless thing to do."

Only on threads about school fines for term-time holidays. On those, holidays are invariably 100% educational experiences for children and nothing to do with anyone lounging around a pool with a book. Grin

g135 · 19/05/2021 15:29

We've had both vaccinations (though not our kids) and I'd love to be able to go on one of our booked holidays overseas. The U.K. is lovely and we had a nice week in Cornwall last summer but it was a shivering in the rain on the beach job. Still nice to get a change of scene.

Very undecided as to whether we'll go if it's still on the amber list. For the avoidance of doubt, we would follow the quarantine rules to the letter but it involves a lot of hassle and expense with testing.

I can appreciate the "people going abroad are selfish" view. But, living near Heathrow, there have been lots of long haul flights coming and going in the last few weeks (from non green list countries when I look up the details). It therefore feels a little harsh that it seems easier to enter the U.K. if you're coming from another country than if you live here. Plus the EU (with its lower vaccination rates) is opening up for summer travel (rightly or wrongly).

AlmostSummer21 · 19/05/2021 15:40

@jasjas1973

Amber is supposed to be for emergency & compassionate travel NOT for leisure and they MUST get that worded in the correct way do holiday bookings can be changed or refunded

The traffic light system (in law) said nothing of the sort, even now, its just advice, with quarantine at home.

EU rates are plummeting now, in a couple of weeks, they'll be on par with UK.

That is what BJ & various ministers have said, and I think it might be in tonight's briefing.

They weren't clear (what a surprise) on Monday, but that's what they're stressing now.

AlmostSummer21 · 19/05/2021 15:42

@JackieWeaverFever

I don't feel selfish. I feel fucking great for the first time in months. And the (wonderful) Portuguese staff at the hotel we are at are delighted to see us as their economy is on its knees.
More photos please! I swear I can feel the sun on my face!!
AlmostSummer21 · 19/05/2021 15:47

@castemary

Is it selfish of Boris Johnson to refuse to cancel some of the easings of restrictions because it will affect his popularity? Or is it just plebs that are accused of being selfish?
Utterly selfish & fucking stupid!

But that wasn't what the OP asked and we can all behave MORE sensibly than the law dictates. We don't have to be as stupid as he/they/it dictates.

It's legal to smoke, it doesn't mean I have to, so I choose a more sensible option than is permitted, this is the same

StopTryingToSellMeYourBollocks · 19/05/2021 15:50

Is it Andrew Lloyd-Webber making the comments?

Everyone is selfish one way or another, especially to hysterical people who want to control everything. They are the only ones who seem to give a shit about this stuff.

I don't really care if people go abroad if the levels are low in the country they are visiting, but I do care about the government allowing thousands of people in from countries with record levels of cases and deaths, while trying to guilt trip it's own people about not behaving how they want them to. I think that was a bad decision.

AlmostSummer21 · 19/05/2021 15:52

@freakyfridays

How does you going to Italy benefit your friends & family in the tourism industry in the U.K.?

It's unlikely the poster will teleport...

Oh ha ha, you're hilarious. Booking EasyJet flights on line & accommodation on line is hardly going to rejuvenate the British Travel & Tourism sector is it 🙄🙄
AlmostSummer21 · 19/05/2021 16:03

We need Amber, but frankly they've (unsurprisingly) made a complete fuck up of it (yet again) Amber should have been left for the next stage. Now they've put in places that are legal to travel to for emergencies/compassionate reasons, but not leisure. Where are they going to put Europe when we open up with various countries there, but still need to test & quarantine on arrival back in the U.K.? Amber light?!

FFS they can't even get a set of traffic lights right.

freakyfridays · 19/05/2021 16:06

AlmostSummer21

so close... if you'd gone on about driving to Italy and staying with relatives there you could have more of a point Wink

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 19/05/2021 16:14

We should either have stopped travel or had strict hotel enforced quarantine on return.

Wanting a luxury that allows the virus the chance to travel would seek selfish to many. No one needs a holiday.

Leonardsgirl · 19/05/2021 16:17

I will be going provided it's legal to do so, and will take whatever tests etc are required.

You can bet your bottom dollar Stanley Johnson will be off to Greece if he isn't there already.

CheltenhamLady · 19/05/2021 16:21

Each to their own. Why is it anyone's business if they follow all the rules?

Imo, this pandemic has brought the busibody trait out in too many people.
