Are people who are going on holiday this year selfish?

Just saw a big row unfold on my FB feed because someone posted they've had their vaccinations and can't wait to go on holiday and they quite a few negative responses calling them selfish 🙈. I just wondered what others thought?

OP posts:
SamusIsAGirl · 19/05/2021 16:26

Damn right I'm going on holiday - no way am I spending the entire year in the West Midlands! A place not known for nice beaches...

Bibidy · 19/05/2021 16:28

I don't think people are selfish for going away at all.

I'd say going abroad is a bit ill-advised, bu completely understand why people are doing it while they can. The spectre of lockdowns is still hanging over us so at any time things could be taken away again, so I don't blame people for making the most of it rather than waste another year.

everybodysang · 19/05/2021 16:32

@CheltenhamLady

Each to their own. Why is it anyone's business if they follow all the rules?

Imo, this pandemic has brought the busibody trait out in too many people.

Because... of the big pandemic?
bert3400 · 19/05/2021 16:35

Not at all. The airline's have proved with up to date air filtration that flying is safe . I flew to Mexico last month and felt safe . I had two test at both ends and guess what....I was Covid free . I actually live in an amber country and have felt very safe throughout the whole pandemic. The numbers in my area are so low, I can't wait to see my family

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 19/05/2021 16:36

Nope, good on them.

BusyLizzie61 · 19/05/2021 17:10

@castemary

Is it selfish of Boris Johnson to refuse to cancel some of the easings of restrictions because it will affect his popularity? Or is it just plebs that are accused of being selfish?
Both!

@AlmostSummer21

Oh ha ha, you're hilarious. Booking EasyJet flights on line & accommodation on line is hardly going to rejuvenate the British Travel & Tourism sector is it 🙄🙄

Not all of it but it every penny helps:

"EasyJet plc, styled as easyJet, is a British multinational low-cost airline group headquartered at London Luton Airport"

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/05/2021 17:30

I want to go away on our honeymoon , been cancelled twice so far 😢

Meant to be going end of June but if still amber we can’t or won’t

Can’t afford the 3/4 tests pp so £300 ish extra pp

Can’t afford to self isolate for 10 days after as we both are self employed

We have both had both jabs so very low risk

Jobconfused · 19/05/2021 18:32

Selfish? Nah. Good on them.

Shmithecat2 · 19/05/2021 18:35

I've got two holidays booked. One in the UK in August, and one abroad in October. Selfish or not, I don't really care what anyone else thinks.

Plantlady10 · 19/05/2021 18:44

Why does a holiday always get assumed to be abroad?

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 19/05/2021 18:51

@Summercocktailsinthesnow

Lets be clear, we should not be having to fight amongst ourselves on any platform trying to decipher with our very limited expertise and knowledge whether it is safe or not at any given moment to travel.

The scientists and government need to be much more assertive. It is either safe or it isn't, make a decision and stop the hedging with a half way house. If it IS safe, then let people holiday and if it isn't and the risks are really quite serious then they need to be brave enough to put the brakes on, and do what other countries have done and quarantine everyone that travels. We are doing the worst of all worlds at the moment, and it is not fair on anyone.

It is not about being selfish, it should not be our decision to make, if indeed the outcome is another 20,000 dead and another lockdown!

The general public should be taking responsibility for all manner of things, risk assessments, meet ups, hugging etc, but not for importing new variants unknowingly that could ruin the lives of millions. That should not be on us as to decide.
We need to be able to rely on the science to make informed decisions of that magnitude, and some leadership to enforce required action if needed.

Exactly this!
JustBeKind111 · 19/05/2021 18:54

Not selfish at all. I will be on the first plane back to my home country once they open the borders to people from the UK! Its inhumane to spend a year and a half without seeing my family.

hugocat · 19/05/2021 19:12

@JackieWeaverFever

I don't feel selfish. I feel fucking great for the first time in months. And the (wonderful) Portuguese staff at the hotel we are at are delighted to see us as their economy is on its knees.
I hope you're enjoying your break. Smile
freakyfridays · 19/05/2021 19:51

@Plantlady10

Why does a holiday always get assumed to be abroad?
Because otherwise it's a "staycation" - however much I hate that word!
castemary · 19/05/2021 19:59

No a staycation is day trips.

AlmostSummer21 · 19/05/2021 20:04

@Branleuse

Im not sure that going on holiday can ever be described as a selfless thing to do. Its all about whether you need to relax and get away from things and what that looks like to you. Its neither selfish or selfless.

A lot of people never envisioned this lasting so long. Ive now cancelled 3 holidays since covid, and if i can get away this year I damn well will, as this might never be really over, and I honestly cant, for the life of me see why going to france would be selfish, yet going to cornwall etc isnt

Cornwall you'll generally be going in a private car with the people you live with.

France you'll be in queues with other people no matter how you travel, but especially if you fly. Potentially getting on or giving different variants to many people.

Airports here are shit in the summer for queues anyway, this year they'll be awful. Queuing for hours, no social distancing.

Obviously once you're at your destination everyone's risk will be different depending on where they stay & what they do.

Then the whole plane/airport thing on the way home.

It's very much more of a risk than driving your own car to holiday home in the U.K.

AlmostSummer21 · 19/05/2021 20:06

@castemary

No a staycation is day trips.
Yes!!! Fed up of people, even people on the tv, calling a holiday in the U.K. s staycation! It's not, it's a holiday.! A holiday out of the U.K. is overseas/abroad/ or these days a holiday in 'place name'

Shall we run an advertising campaign?! We need to sort these people out!

AlmostSummer21 · 19/05/2021 20:08

@Vallmo47

I honestly wish all people would just mind their own business. And no I haven’t got anything booked. I’ve done sweet f a for well over a year to protect my loved ones and it’s beginning to take a toll on everyone’s mental health. So I just run my own race and keep my beak out.
Probably best not to open these threads really then
castemary · 19/05/2021 20:16

@AlmostSummer21 If I was very rich I would pay for that advertising campaign.

SamusIsAGirl · 19/05/2021 20:30

That's why I'm off to Cornwall and Devon. Where I am is OK for staycations but it gets old after a while.

oblada · 19/05/2021 20:30

Going on holiday is always about one self first and as such 'selfish'. I don't go on holiday for the good of my neighbours.
Is it irresponsible? No, if done within the rules.

ToryStelling · 19/05/2021 20:32

We’ve got a holiday booked in the US in October. If we can go, we will. We will follow any rules to the letter.

If that makes us selfish then so be it.

freakyfridays · 19/05/2021 20:43

@castemary

No a staycation is day trips.
that's just...day trips.

You don't take a staycation when you go on a day trip at the weekend, do you 😂
or better, you don't have a "staycation" when you just.. stay home?!

Nothing wrong with day trips, but staycations = stay put in your country.

Sparklingbrook · 19/05/2021 20:51

A staycation is staying at home and going on days out. A UK holiday is where you leave your home with all your belongings and stay somewhere else in the UK for a week or two.

I think some people don't think it counts as a holiday unless you get on a plane. Confused
