To not know if I'm a Mrs or a Miss

Ticklemycarpets · 16/05/2021 20:35

I got married recently, happy to be known as Mrs Husbandsname but haven't changed name officially on any documentation.
I was completing an official form today (counter signing someone else's passport) and had to fill in my title with my name.
I am thinking for the purposes of this, my name is still my maiden name as that matches my passport. However I hesitated over ticking the Mrs or Miss box.
I think of my self as a Mrs now....
..but I'm not Mrs Maidenname.

All of you who are married but use your maiden name, do you say you are Miss on official forms?

@NavigatingAdolescence

I’d prefer to use nothing. Tempted my Mx now.
Agreed! It annoys me too. Why do the men just get Mr and that's it? Why do we get a variation depending on our relationship status?
Ednadidit · 16/05/2021 21:09

We still haven’t bothered to do the deed polls to add each other’s names on after our wedding last July and I’m still Miss Maidenname everywhere 🤷🏻‍♀️ Plan is to be Ms Maidenname Marriedname at some vague point in the future.

In your situation, OP, I’d have gone for the name and title on my passport.

NoSquirrels · 16/05/2021 21:13

Ms works in all circumstances. Just do that.

I mostly can never remember what I’m registered as (maiden or married) as I use both depending, but I always put Ms Maiden Name - but have done this forever anyway. Can’t remember last time I was a Miss - probably when I moved out from home at 18 to go to uni?

It really doesn’t matter at all anyway. They need you to tick a box on a form but no one actually gives a shit.

NoSquirrels · 16/05/2021 21:14

Think about it - your passport just says your name. No title. So it really doesn’t matter.

@SchrodingersImmigrant

Dh was once put on a form with my xxx surname after I said Mrs xxx. My surname is a female version (we have male and female versions where I come from) so it made him a girl😂 I still giggle. Peril of not sharing surnames😂
I booked our honeymoon. 2 weeks of Mr Myname and DH is the biggest advocate of women not changing their names!
DumplingsAndStew · 16/05/2021 21:41

It's all so unnecessary complicated. I retained use of Mrs after divorce, which really seems to confuse people 😂

EveningOverRooftops · 16/05/2021 21:41

Married or not I shall be sticking with ‘miss’
WTAF does my marital status have to do with form filling? Men are perfectly capable of filling in forms and existing in society without a title denoting their marital status so I intend to do the same.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/05/2021 21:42

I've been Ms since I was 15.

MeadowHay · 16/05/2021 21:44

I've been using Ms since I was about 16 Grin. Originally Ms MyName and after marriage became Ms HisName-MyName (and yes he is Mr HisName-MyName too).

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 16/05/2021 21:44

Imagine men worrying about this.

Bells3032 · 16/05/2021 21:45

Depends what it is. If it's something I've used before it'll be registered as miss so just use that

Kyph · 16/05/2021 21:46

I am Mrs Maidenname. Married 30 years and never used married name ever.
DH will happily answer to Mr Kyph as I always book everything and use my name. Even the plumber calls him Mr KyphGrin
Last week I rang HMRC and as part of ID check she asked if I had ever been known by another name. I said no and she pushed me to think about it. Then it dawned on me that DHs name is my legal name even though Ive never used it.

lostlife · 16/05/2021 21:56

I choose Monseigneur if that is an option and one is required to proceed (looking at you net a porter) otherwise whatever I fancy

I never use Mrs or Ms in day to day life

HoneyDragon · 16/05/2021 21:57

I use Ms. I changed my name on marriage but as I worked with my Mil and she was already Mrs Honeydragon I was quite happy with Ms. Particularly as is still occasionally use Ms Maiden name depending on who I was dealing with and my marital status wasn’t my clients business.

(Husbands name and happily coworking with the Mil I’m the stuff of Mumsnet nightmares Grin)

Solasta · 16/05/2021 22:00

I'm Mrs Maiden Name

NavigatingAdolescence · 16/05/2021 22:04

I’m intrigued by keeping your name but changing title. Blush

Mumdiva99 · 16/05/2021 22:06

I'm in the same boat as you - although nearly 2 years married now. I tend to use Miss Maiden name. Sometimes I put Mrs Maiden name. And occasionally I use Ms Maiden name. I never use Mrs Husbands name - although that was a big driver towards getting married so I shared my kids name. (funny that now we are married I'm less bothered by that!)

Legal name? No, you’re entitled to use it, but that is true of absolutely any name. Confused

They just assume as you are Mrs that you have changed your name. I get the same question about using Ms.
Merryoldgoat · 16/05/2021 22:11

I use Mrs Maiden Name and have for the 10 years I’ve been married.

Merryoldgoat · 16/05/2021 22:12

@Kyph

My DH also has no issues being Mr Merryoldgoat which he frequently is as I do all of our household admin.

SenecaFallsRedux · 16/05/2021 22:17

I use Ms, but I am in the US where that is usual whether or not a married woman has taken her husband's name.

minniemoll · 16/05/2021 22:18

I've been Ms since I was 18 and intend to stay that way. My marital status is none of anyone else's business.

Throckmorton · 16/05/2021 22:20

Titles like Mrs, Miss, Ms have no legal standing so pick whichever one you like best. Heck, go for Mr if you feel so inclined!

Adventureswith · 16/05/2021 22:20

Ms.
