I've been bad - damaged someone's car in carpark

I came back to my car in a supermarket car park to find that someone had parked their car with their passenger side way too close to my drivers side. So close that I couldn't get past their wingmirror to get to the door. So I had to bend my wingmirror in to squeeze past. Then I had to do contortions to open the door and then get in. I accidentally knocked their wingmirror out of position and dented and scratched their door doing so.

I confess that at that point I was so furious that I let my car door bang again against the other car. I then drove out of the space, stopped, got out and went back to put their wingmirror back in place.

I am now at home feeling super guilty, waiting for a knock on my door from the Police after they track me down from the carpark CCTV.

So, AIBU for squeezing into my car and causing the damage? Should I have gone back to the supermarket and had them call the driver to move their car so I could get in mine?

I'm a big worrier, and this will pop into my head for years to come, as another moment of shame.

Everyone saying to climb in from the passenger side - I definitely couldn't do that, I have very painful hips with very little mobility in them and there's no way on earth I could climb across. Just to get into the car at all, I have to sit sideways on the seat then swivel my legs round.

Newmum110 · 14/05/2021 19:34

You still haven't answered if the other car was between their lines. If this is your answer to being annoyed I think you need to deal with anger. Shocking behaviour

drpet49 · 14/05/2021 19:34

Good for you OP. The other car parked liked a prick.

Alcemeg · 14/05/2021 19:35

It's easy to get cross and want to punish someone who has parked too close. But in a busy car park, things change very quickly. It's possible that when they parked, getting close to your car was the only option.

BoredatHome321 · 14/05/2021 19:37

@InFiveMins

They shouldn't have parked so close to your car door.

Forget about it and move on; should hopefully prevent them parking so stupidly in the future.

Imagine thinking parking like a twat allows for someone to damage your car ON PURPOSE. Crazy that Hmm
Leonardsgirl · 14/05/2021 19:40

Disgraceful. Sometimes people end up parking close because the car on the other side has parked badly. What you did was criminal damage and I hope you get caught.

Staffy1 · 14/05/2021 19:42

I imagine she read the thread.

The OP said she was right in the middle and the other car was over the lines.[/quote]
She would say though, wouldn't she?

BiscoffAddict · 14/05/2021 19:44

All of you posters calling the OP a vandal really to remove the sticks from their backsides. If you park so close to someone else’s car they can get in you deserve it IMO. Maybe the entitled twat will park more considerately next time...

BiscoffAddict · 14/05/2021 19:46

Also my DM serious mobility issues but isn’t actually registered disabled and doesn’t have a blue badge. She’d never be able to climb in the passenger side!

Snackz · 14/05/2021 19:51

@Blossomtoes and if all them spaces are taken? Next Hmm

QueenPaw · 14/05/2021 19:52

Don't agree with what OP did but something definitely needs doing about parking spaces
I drive a small VW polo and often come back to find I am boxed in by 2 large cars and despite turning sideways I can't actually fit in between the car, let alone open my door!
If a car is so big it fits up to the line, how do you open your door to get in? You can't

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 14/05/2021 19:53

@Staffy1

Well none of us were there so we can only take her at her word or move on from the thread really. Especially since she won't come back.

Killahangilion · 14/05/2021 19:54

Get some perspective. It’s just a silly car. You didn’t run over a child.

I’d forget about it if I were you. The Police won’t be interested.

Hopefully Mr crappy parker will learn to park their car more considerately in future or maybe they don’t care about a few scratches and dents? I certainly don’t.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2021 19:56

Presumably she'd be able to go to customer services though.
Iheartmysmart · 14/05/2021 19:57

Not surprised the OP hasn’t been back. Lots of people of here who obviously have a set of jaws for life in their boot so they can cut the roof off their cars to access it and thus avoid the tiniest scratch on an inconsiderately parked car next to them.

BoredatHome321 · 14/05/2021 19:59

@Iheartmysmart don't think anybody is blaming OP for accidentally hitting the car, doing it a second time on purpose and not leaving a note is a shitty thing to do though.

Rhiannon13 · 14/05/2021 19:59

Not how I'd have behaved OP. This is a horrible thing to do at the best of times but even worse after recent events when so many are struggling financially. You say this is 'another' moment of shame so maybe you have a history of this kind of poor decision making?

Any reason why you couldn't have gone back into the shop to ask them to make an announcement? At least you getting out of the car again to straighten the wing mirror should have given them another chance to ID you from the CCTV.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2021 20:00

Yeah... because the only two choices are to deliberately damage the car next to you or cur the roof off your own car 🤦🏻‍♀️
ArnoldJudasRimmer · 14/05/2021 20:00

Admittedly I think OP was in the wrong, but regardless, please think twice about damaging cars and just leaving. Maybe it's just my area (at the time), but I was sat in disbelief as the policeman told me why he'd come to the house, although the difference was I didn't actually do it, I couldn't help wondering the entire time why he came to the house at 9am to discuss "a minor dent"!
There is every chance they won't turn up, maybe my situation was very unusual, but in the case of a genuine accident I wouldn't want someone to drive off assuming the police won't care.

Swansealivingthedream · 14/05/2021 20:01

It’s done. Time to move on

Hugoslavia · 14/05/2021 20:01

Perhaps someone had parked very close to them on the other side when they parked. You should have just climbed in the passenger side. I doubt that you'll get into trouble over it though.

JellyBabiesFan · 14/05/2021 20:01

Depends, it might have been the last car parking space and the vehicle the other side of them left was also parked badly.

Or it there might have been plenty of spaces and they were simply parking like a selfish fucker.

Scenario 1 leave a note.
Scenario 2 do not bother.

nocoolnamesleft · 14/05/2021 20:02

The other driver's actions were inconsiderate. Your actions were criminal.

JellyBabiesFan · 14/05/2021 20:03

No, you should have gone into the shop and asked for a tannoy of their reg to be announced and got them to move rather than damage their car then drive off

There are some proper nut jobs in this world. Getting the shop to announce somebody needs to move their car over the tannoy is not a wise move. People have been assulted for less.

RedcurrantPuff · 14/05/2021 20:05

This is something I always worry about doing as I am fat and cant squeeze into a tiny space :(

It’s not reasonable to damage someone’s car but I hate inconsiderate parking.
