I want neighbours like the people that surrounded that van in Glasgow

These people are legends. This was the tonic I needed:

This is not about promoting lawlessness. Dawn raids are barbaric and it was EID.
@Febo24, catch up hen, see my post above Grin
It's been a looonnngggggg day! But I'm glad it wasn't a false memory. I like to entertain my English friends with such tales from the backwaters.

Dddccc · 14/05/2021 20:35

I completely go against this, 100s of people close together in the middle of covid are stupid they were not in the country via legal means if they came in properly it would never have been an issue, they were also not Muslim according to the news post

skirk64 · 14/05/2021 20:42

Enter the country legally and abide by the rules, chances are you won't get the immigration people turning up at your door.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 14/05/2021 20:43

These men had been in the UK since 2008 and live in a multicultural area that has many Muslims.

Why was it urgent for the Home Office to act on that day, Eid? İt just seems provocative. İt's irrelevant that the men were Sikh. Such actions affect the whole community. Because it is a community.

Febo24 · 14/05/2021 20:47

Enter the county legally and abide by the rules, chances are they'll turn up anyway.

Lawyer Jelina Berlow Rahman, who has been instructed to represent Mr Singh, said: "What I can tell you is Lakhvir Singh has been here since 2008, a substantial period of time, therefore in my opinion he still has a right to a private life, a family life.
"It was evident yesterday, the number of people who came together, that was his community, that was neighbours, that was his friends - the majority of people knew him
Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf condemned the Home Office for its actions, in what ended up as an hours-long standoff between police officers and protesters in the city's Kenmure Street.
Answering questions at the Scottish Parliament, Mr Yousaf said: "The blame for what we saw lies squarely on the shoulders of a Home Office that took completely reckless action, which went into the heart of Scotland's Muslim community on the day of Eid.
"At best it was utterly incompetent, at worst it was designed to provoke."

Other Scots, can you remember when it was the school holidays, but because our holidays started before England, we didn't get kids holiday telly until half way through, and then had to go back to school knowing full well it was still on??

Yup, going to school and Timmy Mallett was still on. It still happens on exam results day which a different date in England, or no coverage of the Scottish shops reopening after lockdown but loads about when the English shops opened.

GlasgowsGreen · 14/05/2021 20:55

@Moondust001

Whilst I do not support the actions of the Immigration Service, and deplore the timing as well, it's amusing reading how many people would like neighbours like these. I know the area well. Trust me, you mostly don't want neighbours like you'd get. Few of the decent people, by far the majority, in that area, want neighbours like they have. Violent crime, sexual assault, domestic violence, drugs, theft and burglary. There is a reason why the disenfranchised live there...
Good grief, I don’t think I’ve ever been called disenfranchised before. I’m one of the neighbours and I hardly know what to say to this assessment of my neighbourhood. But I was very glad to have stood in the street with all our other neighbours yesterday. It’s an incredible community and I’m proud to be part of it.

Yes - but it meant that we got to go on holiday early (always went tot France) and place was relatively quiet because the English schools hadn’t started yet!

And we had the Untied Shoelaces Show. How we suffered...

@Quincie

BBC 1/2 etc aren't BBC England though, are they? They purport to be a SERVICE for the entire UK, but we routinely see bias and the side lining of all the home nations except for England. Things are far better now, but as ssd has said we all grew up feeling like we didn't matter one jot: there was rarely anyone who sounded like me on the BBC or much coverage of our culture/ events/ lifestyle. Maybe you have the wrong provider - Sky has a dozen different BBCs - n Ireland, Wales , Scotland NE? Anyway loads - Your complaint applies to all of England imv, the bbc were London centric, That are now changing.
That was my point- all through our lives growing up it excluded us. I also have Sky (we have that up here, together with hot running water) and I see the number of BBC channels, my point is that the MAIN BBC channels (BBC1/2) are still heavily biased towards middle class England. You are being obtuse.

Exactly. Still no coverage of Scottish results day/ N Irish results day, Scottish/ Irish schools' holidays or returning to school. No coverage of lockdown relaxing either. Yes, on BBC Scotland/ N Ireland but we're talking about the main channels here.
StoneofDestiny · 14/05/2021 21:06

Very little Scottish news gets reported on the BBC news. This is a positive story about welcoming immigrants, community cohesion and community direct non violent action. It should be publicised as widely as the negative 'we hate immigrants' stories.

Bravo Glasgow 👏👏👏

Elieza · 14/05/2021 21:08

Well said @ssd.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 14/05/2021 21:09

I lived round the corner from there for many years. I still work in the area. I’m not surprised at the turnout. One man got under the van to stop them moving. He stayed there for over 8 hours.
I couldn’t make it but I know many people who did. The turnout was even bigger than what that video shows or what the media has shown. It’s not even really about those two particular men. It’s about protesting Dawn raids. It’s about the heavy handed way they deal with immigration and people who have lived, worked and established themselves here for many, many years are being kicked out.

Anyway I’ve included a couple extra Twitter links that better show the scale of it all.

Febo24 · 14/05/2021 21:15

I assume the number in attendance outstrips the number of votes Jayda got at the same time last week?! A few times over....

Sarcobaleno · 14/05/2021 21:30

The people that are saying the detainees were Sikh and therefore Eid is irrelevant are missing the point. The community reject one of their own being targeted on a day of celebration in a multicultural area. It was thoughtless or worse, deliberate, antagonism against the community.

@Sally872

The suspected crime is living here. Dawn raids are a disproportionate reaction for a crime of being born in another country. Fine investigate, but there are more humane ways to do it.
Exactly. These men have been here for ten years, playing a full part in their community, volunteering etc. A dawn raid was unnecessary.

This is it in a nutshell. We are supposed to beva civilised and progressive society. People can cause all sorts of trouble in their community, shop lifting, anti social behaviour etc and they don't get huckled into a van.

sHREDDIES19 · 14/05/2021 22:41

They’ll be turfed out soon enough so waste of time.

TildaKauskumholm · 14/05/2021 22:42

I don't get the admiration for mob rule. I also don't want neighbours like that, if they think anybody can just choose where they want to live regardless of that country's immigration rules. I can't just up and move to Switzerland/USA/Australia wherever because I feel like it and want a higher standard of living. I would have to abide by that country's rules, which is as it should be.

eatsleepread · 14/05/2021 22:54

Weegies love nothing more than an underdog! Halo

StoneofDestiny · 14/05/2021 22:54

It's called Community Action. It's Community Cohesion in Action. A community coming together peacefully to say 'not in our name' is to be admired.
