I want neighbours like the people that surrounded that van in Glasgow

These people are legends. This was the tonic I needed:

This is not about promoting lawlessness. Dawn raids are barbaric and it was EID.

Why is Scotland so left wing when much of England is conservative (large and small C)? I'm interested rather than critical.

Gorgeouslilgirl · 14/05/2021 16:03

@ssd

Glasgow is like that *@flashbac* You have so many decent people here who will stand up for others. And dont look down on others or patronize each other. Scotland is a very socialist country. We rejected brexit by a big majority. And we'll never have a tory right wing government. We do need a decent opposition right enough, and i say that as a yes voter. A lot of us would like independence as we see the westminster Johnson Government as totally alien to everything we believe in. Of course like everywhere else we have poverty and a real desperate under class. Theres always been less jobs up here than anywhere ive lived in England. And housing is desperate in some areas as people bought council houses to line their pockets and now young people and families cant get decent housing. And of course we have the blight of sectarianism. This weekend will see gatherings of football fans with little police resistance, if its anything like last time. But on the whole, its a decent place to live.
Fantastic post

Does anyone know of his background?

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 14/05/2021 16:06

There are many reasons Scotland is more Liberal. I'm not sure why but on this topic, lots of communities are rural or semi rural, we rely on each other. The few cities we have tend to be very cosmopolitan. We don't have enough of a workforce and immigrants are generally welcomed. I think this makes us quite tolerant as a nation. There are exceptions of course.

Belindabelle · 14/05/2021 16:07

Dawn raids are indeed useful if a serious crime has been committed or can be averted. In that case they would be carried out by the police.
This dawn raid was carried out by Border Force. There was no immediate threat to the public by those two men.

Gorgeouslilgirl · 14/05/2021 16:08

I love Scotland. But can’t live there. It is too cold! Winters I can still manage, all bundled up. It is the lack of a real summer that gets to me

As a Scot, it feels up here like we are used to being the under dog. We're used to getting ignored and being at the end of news segments, weather reports etc . It seems to me the media is all about England, as a kid the cartoons put on during the summer holidays always started 3 weeks after we stopped for the summer ,as that was when the English holidays started. Then we went back in August and there was no mention of this on telly, but once we'd been back 3 weeks it was all Back to School!! adverts on telly, much to our annoyance. Same as the weather report even now, if its sunny in London its 'a beautiful day today' even if it's poured down all week here. We might get a wee mention at the end. And Celtic and rangers have massive worldwide following but as usually relegated a few seconds reporting after rhe English womans teams or the cricket. What im trying to say is, we have more tolerance and goodwill for others as adversity usually makes folks a bit more caring as you know hard life can be.

I’ve read elsewhere that the detainees were Sikh and they were actually picked up at 10am.

They claimed asylum but had been rejected. They have the right to appeal so i don’t understand why they couldn’t be allowed to do so from their homes.

BashfulClam · 14/05/2021 16:13

This is what we do up here. We stick up for others a lot. I loved the wee guy under the van ‘aye I’m just chilling under yer meat wagon here pal!’ These people have lived here for years and this is their home, they are one of us now. The racism is still there but I love seeing it being driven out. I hate Humza Useless normally but well done to him for wading right in there.

IntermittentParps · 14/05/2021 16:19

so yes, you want people to have immunity during religious celebrations.

No, but out of all the days they could have chosen...

Belindabelle · 14/05/2021 16:24

Immunity from what?

They were appealing the Home Office decision. They have not committed a crime.

I’ve seen that they were Sikh too. Lovely to see the solidarity between Sikh, Muslim, white people etc. A great way to celebrate Eid.
Belindabelle · 14/05/2021 16:31

The fact that it was Eid is a red herring.
The fact that it was Nicola Sturgeons constituency is probably deliberate.

Moondust001 · 14/05/2021 16:31

Whilst I do not support the actions of the Immigration Service, and deplore the timing as well, it's amusing reading how many people would like neighbours like these. I know the area well. Trust me, you mostly don't want neighbours like you'd get. Few of the decent people, by far the majority, in that area, want neighbours like they have. Violent crime, sexual assault, domestic violence, drugs, theft and burglary. There is a reason why the disenfranchised live there...

Pumperthepumper · 14/05/2021 16:48

It’s brilliant, so lovely to see.

Reading and watching the various clips have made me cry this afternoon !

And theres arseholes everywhere
Quincie · 14/05/2021 18:41

There's BBC Scotland tv and Radio Scotland - so I don't see why you feel so deprived

Quincie · 14/05/2021 18:42

Oh and Gaelic tv channel too

Tal45 · 14/05/2021 18:52

It's lovely that the neighbours are so protective of each other but surely a dawn raid is to make sure you're actually in? Otherwise if they did it in the middle of the day and you were out then you'd get wind of it and do a runner? And weren't they Sikh so surely Eid isn't relevant?

Gingernaut · 14/05/2021 18:55

So what if it's Eid?

The immigrants about to be deported were Sikh.

I think my friend lived there too - I remember the name clearly (and it’s not where Paddington lived)..
