Female weekend hobbies

Frequently men having "hobbies" that take them away from their family/house at the weekends is frowned upon.
But surely what we should be doing is encouraging women to also maintain a sense of self and own interests away from the family? IMO it's good for the family and for the individual.

So wise MNetters - hit me up with your weekend hobbies where you make your husbands/partners/SO weekend widowers.

Running - in pretty places, maybe not close to home.
Workshops - singing, crafting, sewing
Volunteering?

HeadNorth · 13/05/2021 18:07

@Clymene

I wonder how many women who have very time consuming hobbies have autistic toddlers. Not many I'd guess.
My children are grown up - I obviously did not have as much time for hobbies when they were wee!
Thistles24 · 13/05/2021 18:07

Hiking and mountain biking. However, in my opinion it’s selfish for one persons hobby to dominate the entire weekend, and I wouldn’t even be happy at DH doing his all day Saturday and me all day Sunday. That leaves no family time at all (kids in school all week and both working). So I might go for a long hike once a month with friends, the other weekend I’ll just go on my bike for an hour or two. And DH golfs one evening a week and on a Saturday.

Glad to see the misogynists are out in force here. 🙄
who? Women (and mothers) who have hobbies? Confused
countrygirl99 · 13/05/2021 18:08

@backinthebox

Horses here too. I have taken it to the extreme, and do a discipline which takes up the entire weekend. I try to limit it to 6 weekends a year, but it’s a long distance discipline and it takes a lot to get the horses fit enough. I’m trying to keep 3 fit atm, I am just about to drag the kids out on them for a 90min brisk trot in the rain. It’ll be character building.
TREC is my discipline. Gone all weekend and lots of long hack for fitness. Then there are the training camps😊

Fencing (often an entire weekend) Running

The big advantage of sports that get you out of the house is that they are out of the house so you can't get diverted/have questions asked.

I try to do yoga and some weight training (plus other crafty stuff like cross stitch and crochet) and because they're home based they fall by the wayside so easily.

Totally looking forward to getting back to the fencing circuit and getting weekends away from home!

Surely there are only so many fences you can build? Or is it a side line business?
Imissmoominmama · 13/05/2021 18:08

Hiking.

YellowFish12 · 13/05/2021 18:10

Oh the usual:
Running
Road cycling with roadie buddies
MTB
Spin classes
Hiking - although to be fair I do this with DP mostly
Climbing - with DP 90%
Seeing girl friends
Eating or drinking with girl friends
Going to techno raves (occasionally)

osbertthesyrianhamster · 13/05/2021 18:13

Rock climbing. Now DD does it, too! That's both of us gone. But DH and DS go golfing.

Egghead81 · 13/05/2021 18:14

@motherloaded

I’m a single parent
And I actively enjoy doing housework at the weekend.

There’s no “right” or “wrong” to what someone enjoys

WorriedMillie · 13/05/2021 18:17

Horses! Although I do try to keep Sundays relatively horse free, so we can go out as a family (I do the mornings, friend does the afternoons)
I’m not competing at the moment though, when I was, it was pretty much a whole weekend thing

Pinetreesfall · 13/05/2021 18:18

Hooow do some of you get time for all this at the weekends?! I have to cram in everything I don't get done in the week to weekends.
I dance once a week in the evening and that is literally all I have time for.

motherloaded · 13/05/2021 18:19

Egghead81

it's the martyr attitude the problem.

If someone genuinely enjoys a leisurely week, and doing their housework at the weekend, of course.

But what we mainly read is women complaining they are stuck with all the work and only men have the luxury of hobbies and free time. That's what I have a problem with. If you CHOOSE not to have weekend hobbies, then there's nothing to complain about!

Grin

you ARE being sarcastic, aren't you!

CaptainThe95thRifles · 13/05/2021 18:20

When you have horses that need working and keeping, you make time. Generally at the expense of sleep, housework, personal appearance and, more often than not, sanity...

TheLazyToad · 13/05/2021 18:21

I have a narrowboat.

motherloaded · 13/05/2021 18:22

by cramming everything in the week!

And prioritising. If you make weekends your priority (after your job and the most basic things), you find the time over something else.

coogee · 13/05/2021 18:23

Myself: Kayaking, paddle boarding, climbing, gym, swimming, running. I’m a single parent too so I really try and make the most of that one full day a week I get completely to myself.

Kayaking, paddle boarding, climbing, gym, swimming and running is quite a full day!

NoMLMbots · 13/05/2021 18:23

@PositiveLife

Well I'm a single parent and this probably outs me but here goes:

Caving
Rock climbing
Scuba diving
Wild swimming
Archery
Pole
Hoop
Silks
Hiking
Camping
Kayaking

Ah; I know exactly who you are by that list Grin
StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 13/05/2021 18:23

Choir weekends.

BikeRunSki · 13/05/2021 18:24

Cycling, swimming, running, walking

With and without family

She said 'fencing' as in the sport...
Lyricallie · 13/05/2021 18:24

Surfing! Although I do go out with my fiance so probably not the best example. But surf lessons I'd be happy to go by myself.

Also the gym, I go with the girls and we go to different weight lifting classes together.

Also I count volunteering as my hobby too, I do a lot with the girl guides and the town community type group. That's a good one as I get to know people outside of work and also what's going on about town. (It's a very small town).

Agreed

I honestly think some women would be lost without their DH having who by and being able to complain about it
