Female weekend hobbies

Frequently men having "hobbies" that take them away from their family/house at the weekends is frowned upon.
But surely what we should be doing is encouraging women to also maintain a sense of self and own interests away from the family? IMO it's good for the family and for the individual.

So wise MNetters - hit me up with your weekend hobbies where you make your husbands/partners/SO weekend widowers.

I'm curious what age your children are to allow more time intensive hobbies?

Of an age where their father is perfectly capable of parenting them? They're not being left alone. They have two parents.

Isn't competition a wonderful thing? If this goes on much longer I'll start to think that men are doing all the weekend childcare.

Well, mine does. It can't be that massively unusual. He takes the kids swimming, to play squash, basketball in the park and does the grocery shop.

I think that's pretty normal... It's only on MN you get the ones who spend the weekend hungover on the XBox insisting parenting is women's work.

I'm a competitive swimmer. All competitions are at weekends, and training is every evening. Ok it's not every weekend but at least once per month.

I totally agree that just resting is a valid pass time. This is part of the problem - resting isn’t seen as a valid “hobby” / commitment.

My favourite hobby is reading but people don’t count that as a proper hobby either

Mountain biking - on my own and with DH and DS. We'll head to the Alps for part of the summer to use ski-lifts to ride.

Gardening - I work for a huge company and get to care for two huge gardens that are open to visitors, as well as having my own and a larger than usual allotment.

Dry stone walling - surprisingly relaxing as it's a new skill and takes a lot of thinking about.

I'm up at 430 to go running in the Lake District. I'm up this early so I can be back in time for a mother's day lunch with my parents and family.

Riding my bike, yoga and studying a language are my weekend hobbies.

I usually do 7kms on my bike, put the bike in the back of the car and ghen go to yoga straight afterwards.

Study is done a bit each day but the main part at weekends.

Skiing! Sometimes I take the kid but mostly go by myself or with other ladies! Also ladies night. Morning swims. Ladies weekend etc.

I shop with a friend one day of every weekend. We get a coffee and a muffin and browse. Sometimes it’s a big shopping spree, other times if money is tight it’s just a coffee and a muffin and window shopping.
I look forward to it all week.

Carboot sales, choir (not religious type), walking, football ( watching).

Hiking, mountain biking, and weight training plus competitions. Indoor and outdoor rock climbing. Occasional choir, including performing. Photography outings. Occasional overnight stays to see shows, exhibitions or visit my tattoo artist.

I'm the one with the hobbies, not him.

It was the exact opposite in my family. My mum played netball two or three times a week for years including a Sunday morning. My dad never did any sports but never had an issue with mum doing hers.

My hobby is foosball (aka table football).

In the 12 months before covid I went to various tournaments around the UK as well as tournaments in France, Germany, Czech Republic and Spain (for the Foosball World Championships).

Although there are more men than women at these tournamnets there were quite quite a few women in the larger tournaments in continental Europe.

And of course if you travel abroad to a tournament you might be able to spend a few extra days there sightseeing.

I've never found a hobby that I've managed to stick at. Over the years I've tried yoga, knitting, scrap-booking, joined a choir, joined a book club, photography...I've always lost motivation, got bored or decided I didn't enjoy it enough to justify the time and effort within a few weeks.
I am out of the house from 6.45am til 6pm and have two young children so I'm tired most of the time. By the time the kids are in bed I just want to collapse. I'm not crafty or sporty. I'd love to find a hobby I enjoy enough to persevere with but it just hasn't happened. I feel a bit sad about it really as when I think about it I spend all my time either working or parenting.

Chess tournaments are a nice way to fill a weekend. Many of them even start on the Friday evening. If you find one far enough from home, you get to stay in a hotel.

Haven't yet escalated to the week-long tournaments in Malta, but they are very tempting.

Have you ever done that thing where you slide the Club biscuit out of the paper sleeve, then unwrap,it really carefully, so you can fold the paper up again, but empty - slide it back into the sleeve, and use it to fool someone?

Dsis and I used to play this trick on dad every time we had a Club. And he always fell for it - though now I think that wasn’t entirely genuine!
