Female weekend hobbies

Frequently men having "hobbies" that take them away from their family/house at the weekends is frowned upon.
But surely what we should be doing is encouraging women to also maintain a sense of self and own interests away from the family? IMO it's good for the family and for the individual.

So wise MNetters - hit me up with your weekend hobbies where you make your husbands/partners/SO weekend widowers.

Fencing (often an entire weekend)
Running

The big advantage of sports that get you out of the house is that they are out of the house so you can't get diverted/have questions asked.

I try to do yoga and some weight training (plus other crafty stuff like cross stitch and crochet) and because they're home based they fall by the wayside so easily.

Totally looking forward to getting back to the fencing circuit and getting weekends away from home!

Another one with horses. I have 4, all in DIY so I am rarely free, I run too and have recently taken up golf (with my DH)

Lone parent with no easy support, but DS2 is 12 now and happy (and able!) to be left alone for longer periods. It's gone to my head so I'm enjoying being able to do my sports in the evenings and at the weekend e.g. swimming, running, boot camp, classes.

It hasn't been possible before now as he wasn't old enough pre-covid, but I think I'll be able to enter races at the w/e now without having to bring him along or arrange childcare.

@FluffMagnet

Horses. Eat time and money like it's going out of fashion. Likely to also take up your mornings and evenings too though if you get too into the sport.

Every time I see a post complaining about men cycling or playing golf I wonder if there is a male equivalent of mumsnet where they are moaning about riding see is that is predominantly female and it seems like half the men involved are gay.

Weekend yoga retreats.
Galleries and museums - you don't want a hood exhibition ruined by the family.
Conventions and conferences relating to hobbies.

I rockclimb, hillwalk and paddleboard. All take me outside and away from home so I absolutely love it!

Kayaking, mermaiding, wild swimming, burlesque, silversmithing 😁 plenty of scope for escaping although I don't have a dh or dc so much less escapage is necessary!

Walking in nature. I do it every weekend with friends. Takes up the best part of Saturday or sometimes Sunday. It’s my time.

Horses here too. I have taken it to the extreme, and do a discipline which takes up the entire weekend. I try to limit it to 6 weekends a year, but it’s a long distance discipline and it takes a lot to get the horses fit enough. I’m trying to keep 3 fit atm, I am just about to drag the kids out on them for a 90min brisk trot in the rain. It’ll be character building.

Quilting. Back in the days when we could I used to go on quilting weekend retreats, two nights in a hotel, all meals catered and non-stop sewing. Bliss.

@Confrontayshunme

Trolling charity shops and upcycling furniture/DIY jobs. Last weekend I spent four hours making a herringbone pattern cabinet door with lolly sticks. It looks awesome and I couldn't hear anyone asking me for anything over the sound of my orbital sander.

Grin I might start carrying one as standard, and firing it up every time I'm approached for something.

For me it’s spa days, shopping trips, theatre weekends and one that’s not been mentioned D&D...I came to it late in life and love it. We’ve been able to carry on gaming over lockdown using Discord and Roll20 and it’s been great having something so social that I could still do. DH has been a total D&D widow Grin

FatCatThinCat · 13/05/2021 17:05

I spent my weekends rooted on the sofa crocheting blankets for people. I don't make my DH a weekend widow though, he'd probably quite like that. He's a weekend gopher. Because obviously I can't disturb the cat who is sitting on my legs, supervising my work, to get my own drinks and snacks.
