Female weekend hobbies

sillysmiles · 13/05/2021 16:04

Frequently men having "hobbies" that take them away from their family/house at the weekends is frowned upon.
But surely what we should be doing is encouraging women to also maintain a sense of self and own interests away from the family? IMO it's good for the family and for the individual.

So wise MNetters - hit me up with your weekend hobbies where you make your husbands/partners/SO weekend widowers.

Sorry but haven't read all of the comments....My weekend hobby is shagging my husband senseless and drinking vast amounts of wine together!
I do not feel the need to go away and have some hobby just for the sake of it as we really enjoy being with each other. He works long hours during the week and I have the luxury of not having to work at the moment so I make our weekends special.
I might be a bit sad but I like making him food he will really enjoy, pampering him, (He also pampers me).
We are both really into F1 and our retro Jap cars and run a local car club so a lot of our time is spent organising car shows or modifying our cars or sometimes just driving somewhere nice to take photos of them when there is not a race on TV!
Oh God, we sound like weirdo's now!

FastnetLundyRockall · 14/05/2021 18:35

Swimming/ biking / running to try and counteract the wine/curry/pizza which is my main hobby

hobbyhearse · 14/05/2021 18:40

Thanks so much for everyone who replied about wild swimming. I've had a mooch around facebook and a few online sites and am determined to give this a go!

NotMeNoNo · 14/05/2021 18:50

I've loved reading these. Sewing, knitting, thinking about them and shopping for materials. I'd love outdoors stuff with DH but we're in wilderness years of teens who won't join in but can't be left alone too long

WorkHardPlayHard1 · 14/05/2021 19:00

Have often thought that but am so under the veil of motherhood that I never managed to do anything & didnt fancy running in a field in the summer rain-- 😁--

MummyBearBoo · 14/05/2021 19:46

If the kids let me I do some scrapbooking I'm making a scrapbook of the kids early years and milestones as I know they won't remember these things when they're older - called Milestones and Memories- I'll be going back to the gym too once the youngest is in preschool!

itsfictionstupid · 14/05/2021 19:52

I go to museums, theatre, art galleries, etc on my own in normal times (and can't wait for them to re-open). I've occasionally been on a weekend trip e.g. to Liverpool when they had the terracotta warriors a couple of years ago. I hope to do that more often once my dcs have left school.

Out of my friends, the ones with the most time consuming hobbies are:
making scenery for an amateur drama group
doing triathlons
running a Brownie pack

Plus a few have arts and craft hobbies, but they do those at home, so not sure that counts?

expatinspain · 14/05/2021 20:01

Does watching Netflix count?? 😁

Newnormal99 · 14/05/2021 20:04

@Jjjjjj1981 @PositiveLife

Another single parent here who has finally taken the plunge and booked a paddle boarding lesson.

Love the look of it. Not sure when I will find the time to do it though if I enjoy it......

expatinspain · 14/05/2021 20:04

Honestly though, the way things still are for most families is that women still do the lions share of the childcare. While men persuade their hobbies, women take care of family life. It's wrong, but in the majority of family dynamics where someone is pursuing a hobby, this is the case.

Bugbabe1970 · 14/05/2021 20:33

I think families should spend their weekends together

BetterThanKleenex · 14/05/2021 20:42

Gardening? Can be done as a family or individually, suitable for most abilities, ages, etc.

sillysmiles · 14/05/2021 20:56

@bugbabe1970 for the most part families spend most of their evenings together, why can't 2 adults (assuming 2 adults) take time to pursue something they enjoy with friends outside of their immediate family?

Ragwort · 14/05/2021 20:58

Bugabe why do you say that, do you think families should be together 24/7 at weekends? When I was a child it was good to see that my DPs had separate interests and hobbies apart from 'being with the family' all the time. My parents are individuals in their own right and not just 'Mum' and 'Dad' ... of course I have lovely memories of doing things all together but I am proud of my DPs, they both played active roles in the community, local politics, volunteering, running Scouts, sports clubs etc (many activities which actually allowed other families to have 'family time' ... ever heard of a Footpath Warden? That's a role my Dad did at weekends.)

Neither my DH or I spend all weekend as a 'family' - we have our own interests, hobbies and friends .... and what happens to parents when their DC grow up and leave home if they haven't got their own hobbies? Often they are the parents who have no life of their own and want to live through their adult DC and become insufferable ILs (that you read about on Mumsnet....).

Having your own interests, hobbies etc is essential in my opinion.

sillysmiles · 14/05/2021 20:58

@expatinspain that's what i thought too, which is why i think it's great to read all of these people who have maintained their interests after kids.
I'm curious how many are time spent alone. I think that would be an interesting study, to see if when men pursue hobbies its in groups or women seeking alone time?

Horses here too. I’m rarely home tbh.
DH is a long suffering horse widower.

StellaMalone · 14/05/2021 21:09

Second-hand bookshops !

Passenger42 · 14/05/2021 21:14

I used to love going to car boot sales until covid spoilt my fun, still waiting for them to start again where I live ☹️

RiderGirl · 14/05/2021 21:15

Horses! Horses horses horses, takes me away from my family for a whole day at a time and I really don't care, it truly keeps me sane 😊
