Female weekend hobbies

sillysmiles · 13/05/2021 16:04

Frequently men having "hobbies" that take them away from their family/house at the weekends is frowned upon.
But surely what we should be doing is encouraging women to also maintain a sense of self and own interests away from the family? IMO it's good for the family and for the individual.

So wise MNetters - hit me up with your weekend hobbies where you make your husbands/partners/SO weekend widowers.

@orangesmartiesareace

fairlygoodmother what are silks? I think it is what Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect (?3) was using. "She's turning, she's turning".
Aerial silks. Basically performing aerial acrobatics hanging from fabric, you'd probably know it to see. Bloody tough Grin I pole but that isn't as physically demanding as silks, I think.

Bottomless Brunches

OrangeBananaFish · 13/05/2021 20:54

Definitely running for me. Especially when there is a big race on. The Great North Run would take me out of the house for 12 hours and I have a weekend to Liverpool booked for a marathon (It was supposed to be in 2020, but I am now going in 2022) all by myself.

Really liking some of the ideas on here. When I was younger I remember going away and trying out a variety of outdoors activities. My favourites being rock climbing and horse riding (got no way of affording that one though). Not sure how I'd go about starting something now.

Ladywinesalot · 13/05/2021 20:54

Yeah look I need some healthy hobbies!!

browneyes77 · 13/05/2021 20:54

@1Morewineplease

Watching murder mysteries with a cup of tea and a sticky bun.
Ooh I do love a bit of crime drama with a brew Brew
SionnachRua · 13/05/2021 20:56

Also, just for a home (and reasonably cheap) hobby I'd recommend penpalling. If you're a creative type then there are plenty of more artisric letters being sent. If you're not, plenty of plain envelopes are about too! It's a nice, slow paced one to have.

How do you get in to pen palling?
countrygirl99 · 13/05/2021 21:08
**@countrygirl99* TREC is my discipline. Gone all weekend...* I’ll probably see you around then. I’ll be out all day on the Saturday though, L4 (or L3 if I have the child with me 😉) Not enough reaaaally long ones this year ☹️.
My boy has arthritis now and can't cope with travelling now so I'll be limited to helping. We can still manage a good long hack though. Impressed by level 4. I was looking to go up to 3, love POR but we were rubbish at the PTV and MA.

SionnachRua · 13/05/2021 21:17

If you're on Facebook there are lots of active groups Smile Ladies Who Pen Pal and Worldwide snail mail pen pals are two that I use. You can also use /r/penpals on Reddit (I've used and liked) or a site like Conversation Exchange (haven't used myself). Or you could start small with PostCrossing, which is like swapping postcards as a one off. I don't do that but I hear it's fun.

I've never had a safety issue with it - just vet the person carefully, look at previous posts. I only write to people abroad but that's a personal decision, mainly because I like the slow pace of international mail! Some people use PO boxes for peace of mind but I think most don't.

Running
Weights
Pole
Hoop
Reading
SUP in summer

StooriMidori · 13/05/2021 21:35

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing I need the back story please! :)

I like to take a book to a coffee shop and just sit by myself reading and watching the world go by as I drink copious amounts of coffee. Bliss.

fitflopqueen · 13/05/2021 22:01

Play Poker, has been online for past 15 months but can play live tournaments from next week, this easily uses a weekend afternoon or evening/night.

Wriggleout · 13/05/2021 22:12

Playing music, writing up music

And I gig with my band, though not during the pandemic obvs, but we're starting up again over the summer. Can't wait!

Cherrysoup · 13/05/2021 22:18

Horse, takes up a fair bit of the weekend. I’m increasingly interested in the garden and producing my own food. I can spend quite a while in the garden watering, admiring, rearranging.

hilariousnamehere · 13/05/2021 22:20

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

Feet up on the sofa with a book has always been a favourite of mine. But I hate the word ‘hobby’ - to me it conjures up someone either nerdy or obsessive.
Haha I am both nerdy and obsessive about books 🤣 but excellent choice of hobby Grin
hilariousnamehere · 13/05/2021 22:24

I forgot larp and pebble hunting. And rollerskating. And a car club for a while. I maybe have some hobby issues 😂

backinthebox · 13/05/2021 22:38

@countrygirl99 I was looking to go up to 3, love POR but we were rubbish at the PTV and MA We are terrible at PTV! Horse sees no reason why he should either stand still or shuffle through poles half way round a cross country course. Grin But you can get far enough ahead in the POR that the PTV is less important. I am a complete map fiend. You should have a go, there are not enough L3ers, especially pairs. The step up to L4 was a real eye-opener though! Much learning still to be done there for me! Grin I am aiming for higher walk marks in the MA this year. We are good at canter, but horse's walk is sooo slow after years shepherding DCs around on tiny ponies. Both kids are on horses now though, so he is learning to walk a bit faster!

CaptainThe95thRifles · 13/05/2021 23:11

Wanders in to wave my (multiple) perfect score 100/150 PTV sheets at previous posters.

Shame my map reading is bloody awful Grin

CaptainThe95thRifles · 13/05/2021 23:14

[Should've proof read that. 100 winter series / 150 summer series. Not 100/150. That wouldn't be cool.]

DdraigGoch · 13/05/2021 23:26

@araiwa

It's a secret. It might be outing
A choice between golf and cycling then
AwkwardPaws27 · 13/05/2021 23:35

I think my mum's hobby was following me around telling me that she "bent over backwards" for me and moaning at me for reading instead of playing outside whenever the weather was nice.

PickAChew · 13/05/2021 23:41

Scouring fabric shops.

BoredtoTiers · 14/05/2021 01:12

I should start by saying I have no DC, which makes this somewhat easier, however:

 • Road cycling (and occasional MTB)
 • Hillwalking
 • Paddle boarding
 • Camping

tend to be the major weekend trips. Also do a bit of running, weight training and yoga but that's tends to be fitted in midweek around work. Used to climb, but that went by the wayside with COVID as I was CEV so indoor gyms weren't a consideration.

No widowers here. DH has a substantial overlap on hobbies, although I'm trying very hard to do things with groups / other people now lockdown is easing. Not because I dislike my DH, but because I think it's healthy and also commitments with others are less likely to fall foul of 'had too much wine' or 'meh it's a bit miserable out, cba' Grin

H2OConnoisseur · 14/05/2021 01:40

Another road cyclist here! I've recent downloaded Strava and joined a club. There's no turning back is there! Grin

timeisnotaline · 14/05/2021 01:41
