Female weekend hobbies

Frequently men having "hobbies" that take them away from their family/house at the weekends is frowned upon.
But surely what we should be doing is encouraging women to also maintain a sense of self and own interests away from the family? IMO it's good for the family and for the individual.

So wise MNetters - hit me up with your weekend hobbies where you make your husbands/partners/SO weekend widowers.

Powerlifting, running and paddle boarding

picturesandpickles · 13/05/2021 19:52

I have lots of things I like doing, but am allergic to the word hobbies I think.

Also many people are perfectly happy with none, so I disagree with the sweeping statements in the OP about them being 'good' - they are just one version of good.

Dog agility

Seafog · 13/05/2021 20:04

@AChickenCalledDaal I hope you get to soon; there is nothing like that moment you climb down the last hill, or dune and get a face full of ocean air.

@MsTSwift

Paddleboarding great as you are in nature and can have a good chat
Ooh, is there much opportunity in the UK? I live in a big conurbation and I feel like it might be limited to the ship canal at best Envy

Yoga. Yoga classes opens the door to yoga workshops and weekend retreats where, as well as yoga, you get to spend time with other lovely ladies, eat delicious food and lay on the floor under a blanket!

Walking. Start walking regularly with a group of friends and gradually increase your distance. You can spend hours out of the house, chatting away with your friends, maybe even a pub lunch, all the name of 'training to walk a marathon'.

Swimming. Perfect when you just want a couple of hours to yourself. If you belong to a nice gym, you can squeeze in a sauna at the same time and have a shower in peace. Maybe even time for a coffee before you go home!

Adreinnesarmy · 13/05/2021 20:13

Sea swimming. So liberating and exhilerating.

ifyougetthechancedoit · 13/05/2021 20:14

@bluebluezoo

Thing is, when my kids were young I was so exhausted and touched out I really didn’t want to be going off swimming or running or whatever.

Fine for dh to do his hobbies, but what I really wanted for my couple of hours a week was to sit in a clean and tidy house, with nothing to do, and some nice food and the latest episode of whatever. With no one bothering me.

Never going to happen.

For many years I've just craved lying in a flotation tank. Complete sensory deprivation. I might invent this as a hobby. All I really want is a break!
hettie · 13/05/2021 20:15

Hockey....but not sure my Achilles will hold up for much longer and I may have to move towards more paddle boarding

VanillaAndOrange · 13/05/2021 20:19

I think of crafts and collecting things as hobbies, I don't really think of physical or group activities as hobbies for some reason. I think that's how the word was used when I was growing up.

But I like running, swimming, cycling (not fast or competitive, just exploring trails), customising clothes, making jewellery and drawing. There was another sport I was interested in before covid but it's done indoors and I don't feel ready to go back to the not very well ventilated place yet.

starsparkle08 · 13/05/2021 20:22

@Clymene I have a 9 year old son who has autism adhd and learning difficulties so no hobbies here either . Life becomes very isolating too

Kerzel · 13/05/2021 20:23

Road cycling. Good excuse for 2/3 hours on my own!

Reading The Times / Sunday Times - print edition, with all the supplements, magazines in peace in the garden with a coffee

Rakip · 13/05/2021 20:27

I like going solo camping and hiking over a long weekend.
used to go skateboarding for the entire day but don't live anywhere near a park now and my knees probably wouldn't thank me for it anymore.

Squiz81 · 13/05/2021 20:31

Netball
Running

Plan on getting a paddle board but that will probably end up being a family activity

AllWashedOut · 13/05/2021 20:37

I have many hobbies but rarely leave home for them. However, in true bloke style fashion I do them and ignore the kids for hours at a time. They are mainly (at the moment) art related. Sometimes the youngest will join me. That's fine.

In the past it would have been: sewing, knitting, writing, tennis, horse-riding.

I dive deep into my hobbies and get a lot from them. I need that 'me' time.

I don't count sports like running or yoga as hobbies or gardening/baking/reading either (not sure why not), but I do those too.

Soon I'll be able to start going back to the cinema. That's as close to a social hobby as I get. Seeing my kind of films with/without a female friend.

OverByYer · 13/05/2021 20:39

Trail running
Yoga
Paddle boarding

AllWashedOut · 13/05/2021 20:41

My female friends do: swimming naked in the sea, sea/river swimming with female friends (I believe this involves rather raucous bbqs to warm up afterwards), kayaking and competitive cocktail drinks/drinking (not all at the same time Grin).

Wildlife Photography

Although my DP does fishing, so he has his own hobby. Ironically however, we both prefer to do our hobbies during the week, because it’s quieter due to people being at work. He’s self employed so can work his hobby around that and I’ll take the odd day off work on a week day, to go out with the camera. Plus wfh means I can easily pop out before of after work couple of hours.

It’s only occasionally we both do our hobby of a weekend. And we can sometimes combine them as I can go to his fishing lake and wonder round with the camera while he’s pitched up with his rods. So our hobbies work quite well together Grin

SamMil · 13/05/2021 20:42

Horses here too!

And running.

MilduraS · 13/05/2021 20:42

My DH bought me a voucher for a massage ages ago and since then I've been going once a month. Pre-COVID I spent an hour being massaged with hot stones then went to the costa over the road with a good book. I needed the hour in Costa to wake up enough to drive. Recently I've been taking my Costa to the car and reading in there with no shame. It's £35 for an hour so spendy enough to be a treat but doesn't break the bank.

Gardening is my new hobby but it doesn't get you out of the house (and away from responsibility Grin).

I'm not much of a runner but a long walk with an audiobook or podcast can be amazing when I'm in the right mood.

Also used to attend a Sunday evening yoga class that was all about chilling out. Really improved my Sunday blues but was occasionally ruined by the sound of a football match on TV when I walked through the door.

backinthebox · 13/05/2021 20:45

@countrygirl99 TREC is my discipline. Gone all weekend... I’ll probably see you around then. I’ll be out all day on the Saturday though, L4 (or L3 if I have the child with me 😉) Not enough reaaaally long ones this year ☹️.

browneyes77 · 13/05/2021 20:47

@spiderlight

Reading. Photography. Spending hours on Lightroom trying to make my terrible photographs look less terrible.
Yay! Another photographer!
Welshponyslave · 13/05/2021 20:50

Horses here too. Both my sons now have ponies so we are at the yard a few hours a day and twice a day at weekends. On top of that we have pony club, fun rides and competitions. Husband doesn’t complain, he comes for a walk every now and again- he is good at holding the pony 😂

Before I had DC I had three horses competing, plus I was schooling/competing for others so was out the house until late each day and often doing two shows a weekend.

We are starting to look for a house with land so at least we will be home more- even if we are never in the actual house!
