Unnecessary cosmetic surgery and treatments

At work today, one of my younger colleagues, (23), was telling us how she is about to get her face 'filled' and botox.
She literally has perfect skin. I asked why she was getting botox and she wrinkled up her forehead by raising her brows and pointed to the area and said ' that's why'.
I tried to explain that everyone has forehead wrinkles when they intentionally raise their brows, but she was adamant she wants rid of them and her face 'filled'.
It just made me so sad that such a young woman thinks normal facial movement is abnormal. She's getting her lips 'done' when she's there.

Today I also me my new neighbour, and I could barely understand (or stop looking at) her as she was talking, as her lips were so pumped up she couldn't talk properly. The side profile was incredible, not just the lips but the whole margin around the lips was so swollen. And black tattooed eyebrows (when will that fashion go away?). Such a shame because she is obviously actually a nice looking woman under that.

WHY do women feel they have to do this to themselves? I know it's all up to the individual and whatever makes them happy yadda yadda, but I wonder if they seriously know how weird it looks, and that everyone can see what they've had done? Or is that the intention?

23 years old seem ridiculous to be thinking about getting fillers and botox!

For the record, 'big lips' are beautiful. Many people have naturally full lips and look normal and lovely.

It's 'fake big(ger) or full lips' that's usually easy to tell and look really weird on the person, not natural. But most of the people who do it aren't bothered with 'looking natural' so it really doesn't matter.

I had braces when I was 12, nothing wrong with my jaw or mouth medically, I was just a bit toothy. I had 4 teeth pulled out and the braces in for 18 months. Just so my smile was 'prettier'. No-one comments on dental work done to actual children for cosmetic reasons. I struggle to really see how fillers and botox are so much worse, they are just less normalised and common which is why there is so much judgement.

I had that done too, including having the healthy teeth pulled out, but my teeth stuck out (due to thumb sucking when I was little) and I was bullied about them. It wasn't purely cosmetic and I really don't think it's comparable to 20 somethings getting botox and fillers.

Ingridla · 12/05/2021 22:42

Yes sorry, I didn't mean big lips aren't beautiful, they realise are, my own mother has a gloriously full Cupid's bow. I meant uneven, unnatural ones which do not fit the face, sort of stick out and make the wearers speech sound strange, I am afraid I have met someone like this and they very proudly told me they'd had them done. Blush

Having teeth that are straight and not crossed over etc are easier to care for too meaning better dental hygiene. So agree not purely cosmetic.
whenthebellsring · 12/05/2021 22:49

@Ingridla No, it's fine. I had a feeling you didn't mean it that way. It wasn't so much your post I was 'correcting' but what it reminded me to clarify, especially incase mine also wasn't clear.

This may be outing, my nieces friend is a performer, she's got a great ass, beautiful lips, both natural she is a black girl, she had ribs removed and lipo suction on her tummy but couldn't rid her pouch now she is due to have her womb removed for a flat stomach.
She has 1 DD and doesn't want more she is 21.

CounsellorTroi · 12/05/2021 22:57

I'm 59 and never had any botox or fillers. I do look at my lips and think it would be nice if they were bigger, but they are a nice shape and a nice colour naturally. So I'm not messing about with them.

EmeraldShamrock · 12/05/2021 22:58

I have had botox. I'm 40 so it is okay. Grin

What kind of shit surgeon would agree to perform a hysterectomy on a 21 year old for cosmetic reasons?
EmeraldShamrock · 12/05/2021 23:01

@CounsellorTroi She had the rib removal, lipo, tummy tuck in Turkey.

TableFlowerss · 12/05/2021 23:02

There’s a tv show (not naming) and so many of the cast have had work. You can tell instantaneously whose had lip fillers, other fillers etc in 9/10 of them.

I personally think the lip filler look is horrid. It’s not even attractive and 9/10 times I thought they were far prettier without the chemicals pumped in to their face.

It’s obviously a fashion trend and that’s the look they want, but I do think it’s a shame because i think it will stretch the skin so that when age starts kicking in, they’ll look older before their time and probably regret having lip fillers when younger.

There’s one particular woman in this particular show and every season she looks tweaked that little bit more to the point she’s starting to look like a carton character of her former self.

I hate that our daughters are going to potentially emulate this ridiculous trend - nightmare

CounsellorTroi · 12/05/2021 23:06

It's unusual to see a female actor on TV who doesn't have full lips.

And yes people who have lots of work done often actually age worse than people who don't. They just end up looking weird. You can turn back the hands on the clock but you can't actually stop time.

whiteblinds · 12/05/2021 23:09

@Chachachachachachachachanges

Meh. I first had Botox at 28 (I’m almost 40 now). Have had it on and off and it does make my face look refreshed when I do.

To be fair the reality is - get it done young and you save yourself from wrinkles later (sadly I didn’t top up often enough for that to be the case for me).

Having it too young/too often can cause the muscles to atrophy which isn't desirable.

Everything in moderation though, I suppose

@littlepattilou

100% agree. *@justawoman76*

I know a few young women like this too, (a couple as young as 18-19!) They were so pretty, and they have ruined their face with collagen, fillers, and botox, pouting like a sink plunger on instagram and looking ridiculous. (This is MY OPINION by the way, before the 'who made you judge and jury brigade' start ranting!)

A couple of them have boob and bum implants, and they look so weird. One of them actually admitted that she feels like she is sitting on a catalogue all the time, after having her bum implants ...

As a few pps have said though, it's the IN look. Really sad, because unlike other trends (like the mullet, ra-ra skirts, neon-pink socks, and punk hairstyles, etc,) this cosmetic surgery obsession is actually dangerous.

And there is nothing 'snobby' and 'judgy' about taking a dim view of it all, and no it is NOT the same as having a bloody brace on your teeth! Hmm

And no-one is telling other women what to do FFS! We are all entitled to our opinions! The opinions of the posters who hate botox and fillers, and collagen, (and think some people look ludicrous with them,) are just as valid as the ones who think they're OK!

Just quit with the 'stop putting other women down' bullshit. We should be free to criticise other women without snide comments implying we're 'letting the sisterhood down!' This 'women must never criticize women' mantra is fucking tedious. Hmm

Like @mumofthemonsters808 I am also in my 50s, and I will NEVER buy into this bullshit 'trend' either. What's more, I have yet to see any middle aged (or older) woman, look younger, after having botox and fillers. They just look 'different.' And often not in a good way.

I thank the Lord every day that my young adult daughter ALSO is not into any of this bullshit.

I will be bloody glad when it's all passed. For the health and welfare of our young (and not so young) women.

👏👏👏

I knew a couple of threads in someone would make a nasty comment.

Your whole OP is nasty. They might be unnecessary to you but they are clearly necessary to the people who get them and help them to feel more confident about themselves. Don’t be so judgemental.

When I was 23 I never looked in the mirror and felt I needed to do anything to my face, other than put a bit of make up on it occasionally. Something is making these young girls think they do need to do it.
EmeraldShamrock · 12/05/2021 23:19

The reality TV shows and SM share some blame.
I've no idea what the appeal is to look like you got a punch in the mouth, my niece is 19 her lips are huge with filler they look shit and sore.

DangerNature · 12/05/2021 23:22

@CounsellorTroi probably because we live in a world so closely integrated with social media where the typical ‘Instagram’ look of perfect tight skin and big lips is every where. Just like so many girls wanted huge fake looking implants in the early 2000’s. If they are doing it in moderation, going to an actual professional and it makes them feel better about themselves then what’s the harm in it? Fillers can be dissolved and are eventually absorbed if they’re left alone for long enough.

MiddlesexGirl · 12/05/2021 23:44

@Sootybear

Basically people are making a tonne of money from women's and men's insecurity about their looks and it's awful. None of it is needed and some procedures could actually be harmful. It would be much better for everyone if we realised that we are all perfect as we are.
This. It's very sad that so many people (usually women) feel they have to fit with some uniform and often odd looking 'ideal'.
Fifthtimelucky · 12/05/2021 23:45

I hate the current trend for fillers, Botox etc. My worry is that they will become the norm, leaving those with natural faces feeling inadequate. That has an impact on self-esteem and puts people, especially young women, under pressure to have work that they don't need, and very possibly can't afford. It could also be dangerous - especially people go abroad to get it done cheaply.

Whitened teeth are another example I think. So many celebrities now have such extreme white teeth that it makes those with perfectly normal teeth feel that theirs are discoloured. I used to notice very white teeth (for example I remember when Jimmy Carr first had his done). Now I don't, which depresses me enormously.

I am 60. I have had nothing done to my face and don't intend to. Do I have wrinkles? Yes of course!

SunscreenCentral · 13/05/2021 00:10

I’m 51 and I’ve had botox - mostly on my “11”s a few times and tiny dots of it elsewhere on my forehead. I like it. It definitely freshens up my face. I’ve had collagen micro-needling, ouchy, won’t do that again.

I would love to get my lips done. I had actually beautiful natural Debby Harry lips when I was younger. I know I can’t have those back as they were but maybe the tiniest little touch-up... I do think about it from time to time. Never thought about these things when I was younger, wouldn’t have entered my head.

I thought I was fat 😑 and that’s where my worries went.

Dogoodfeelgood · 13/05/2021 00:18

23 is a great time to start getting a tiny bit of Botox if you have a very mobile forehead as it prevents wrinkles forming. I have never seen lip filler I have liked though, only one who is close to well done is the actress who plays Fanny in the new series The Pursuit of Love - her filler is done very finely and gives her an elegant pout. Usually it’s completely awful! But Botox I support! Much better use of your money than useless night creams.

EmeraldShamrock · 13/05/2021 00:37

The longer you use botox the shiner your forehead becomes.
I'd imagine after 30 years you'd resemble the moon, we'll live in a world of highlighted foreheads.

unwuthering · 13/05/2021 00:49

The longer you use botox the shiner your forehead becomes.

Kylie was shiny well over twenty years ago when my ex met her. He used to be a big fan, but came home desolate, saying "She's all shiny..."

The other thing to look forward to is the opportunity to sport a forehead snake or two - those bulging veins some Botox users get on their foreheads, like Angelina Jolie and any number of others.
