Unnecessary cosmetic surgery and treatments

At work today, one of my younger colleagues, (23), was telling us how she is about to get her face 'filled' and botox.
She literally has perfect skin. I asked why she was getting botox and she wrinkled up her forehead by raising her brows and pointed to the area and said ' that's why'.
I tried to explain that everyone has forehead wrinkles when they intentionally raise their brows, but she was adamant she wants rid of them and her face 'filled'.
It just made me so sad that such a young woman thinks normal facial movement is abnormal. She's getting her lips 'done' when she's there.

Today I also me my new neighbour, and I could barely understand (or stop looking at) her as she was talking, as her lips were so pumped up she couldn't talk properly. The side profile was incredible, not just the lips but the whole margin around the lips was so swollen. And black tattooed eyebrows (when will that fashion go away?). Such a shame because she is obviously actually a nice looking woman under that.

WHY do women feel they have to do this to themselves? I know it's all up to the individual and whatever makes them happy yadda yadda, but I wonder if they seriously know how weird it looks, and that everyone can see what they've had done? Or is that the intention?

23 years old seem ridiculous to be thinking about getting fillers and botox!

@Serpenta

'It may not be to your taste but it’s nothing to do with you.'

I don't really agree with this. In the broader sense. This kind of stuff being mainstream effects us all. 20 year olds feeling their looks are inadequate unless their forehead is botoxed and their lips are filled is a pretty sad indictment of modern beauty standards.

Very much agree.
littlepattilou · 12/05/2021 21:33

100% agree. @justawoman76

I know a few young women like this too, (a couple as young as 18-19!) They were so pretty, and they have ruined their face with collagen, fillers, and botox, pouting like a sink plunger on instagram and looking ridiculous. (This is MY OPINION by the way, before the 'who made you judge and jury brigade' start ranting!)

A couple of them have boob and bum implants, and they look so weird. One of them actually admitted that she feels like she is sitting on a catalogue all the time, after having her bum implants ...

As a few pps have said though, it's the IN look. Really sad, because unlike other trends (like the mullet, ra-ra skirts, neon-pink socks, and punk hairstyles, etc,) this cosmetic surgery obsession is actually dangerous.

And there is nothing 'snobby' and 'judgy' about taking a dim view of it all, and no it is NOT the same as having a bloody brace on your teeth! Hmm

And no-one is telling other women what to do FFS! We are all entitled to our opinions! The opinions of the posters who hate botox and fillers, and collagen, (and think some people look ludicrous with them,) are just as valid as the ones who think they're OK!

Just quit with the 'stop putting other women down' bullshit. We should be free to criticise other women without snide comments implying we're 'letting the sisterhood down!' This 'women must never criticize women' mantra is fucking tedious. Hmm

Like @mumofthemonsters808 I am also in my 50s, and I will NEVER buy into this bullshit 'trend' either. What's more, I have yet to see any middle aged (or older) woman, look younger, after having botox and fillers. They just look 'different.' And often not in a good way.

I thank the Lord every day that my young adult daughter ALSO is not into any of this bullshit.

I will be bloody glad when it's all passed. For the health and welfare of our young (and not so young) women.

TwinkleToeMatilda · 12/05/2021 21:37

@Ohpulltheotherone I totally agree with what you say. I went to beauticians which says it all. I should have researched the people before letting them put a needle in me but you live and you learn eh! Putting that all aside though I really do miss my natural nose and natural lips and definitely looked better before messing with my face!

@Neonprint the migration can happen for that reason yes but it also happens from having continuous filler over the years as well. It just migrates above the lip line and then creates folds on either side of your mouth! Only way for it to go is if you have it dissolved.

I think all I am trying to say is that after years of having filler I can 100% say I will never have anymore again and being natural in MY OPINION is much more beautiful!

I couldn't have put it better.

BBLs are the most dangerous plastic surgery and getting so common. I know a girl in her early 20s who has had 2 boob jobs and 2 bbl surgeries. She had to be resuscitated after the first one but still went and did the second. But we are supposed to applaud these womens choices? It is their body, they can do what they want with it but there is a massive problem in society when young people are risking their lives to have an extreme hourglass figure, that one brush with death isn't enough to stop someone from going again to try and acheive some ridiculous standard.

People flying to turkey to get their teeth shaved down to nubs and replaced with fake ones. People going abroad to get fat sucked out of one part of their body and placed in another. It is so risky but seen as a normal thing to do, I really don't think it is. But hey who am I to telll people what is normal, of course we should support these young women in risking their health for a big butt.

I’ve been having baby Botox since my early 20’s not for lines but I have hooded eyes and Botox lifts them and makes them
Less puffy.

I agree *@littlepattilou* I couldn't have put it better.

I think botox has a place in society for certain things, and from what you say, it's just improving the look of your eyes slightly (for you,) and I know botox is used for things other than trying to iron out natural (ageing) wrinkles....

But this thread is more about the extreme measures people (usually women) go to, for the sake of beauty!

SittingAround1 · 12/05/2021 21:50

I wonder if there are any long term health impacts due to injecting botox - it comes from botulinum toxin which is an extremely poisonous substance.

Hopdathelf · 12/05/2021 21:51

Vitamin B is also poisonous at the wrong dose or incorrectly used. As are many things.

wingsnthat · 12/05/2021 21:54

@Hopdathelf are you getting vitamin b confused with d? As there isn’t much risk from high vitamin b levels to an otherwise healthy adult.

User123456777 · 12/05/2021 21:54

I just got my lips done because I hated how thin they were , perhaps you should stop judging people. We’re all individuals and have different tastes.

CharlotteRose90 · 12/05/2021 21:56

In your opinion they don’t need anything doing. To them maybe it’s a confidence boost. Nothing to do with you and no need for your comments to them either.

PandoraP · 12/05/2021 21:58

When I see women on tv with lines and naturally aged faces I think they are really beautiful. It’s so rare to see these days, I think actresses and presenters who haven’t had anything done look amasing.

I have mousy brown-ish hair and have lightened it since I was 17. I have been at the butt end of blonde bimbo jokes, and blondes are thick, and 'bleached hair is tacky' comments for over 35 years.

I don't give a fuck, because I love my baby blonde hair, and always have.

I don't care what people think, and I am not offended by it.

Why do you care that people 'judge' you?

If you are secure in your choices, you wouldn't care..........

Hopdathelf · 12/05/2021 22:00

Nope, not confused. Vitamin B, particularly B6, can be toxic at the wrong dose. But thank you for making my point for me: many substances that are “toxic” have useful applications at the wrong dose or misused.

whenthebellsring · 12/05/2021 22:08

I think it's sad and everyone who does it just looks the same and quite off - you can usually tell. But it's another fashion trend. There are zillions of them that come and go.

OP, I do have to comment on your well-meaning [I believe] comments about them looking pretty or good enough [paraphrasing as I can't be bothered to scroll back up] to not need it. What you're unintentionally saying is that if someone isn't "pretty" [by whose standards? It's in the eyes of the beholder anyway], they can go ahead and 'fix' themselves.

I think them being young or "pretty" is neither here nor there - it's more about people accepting and loving themselves the way they are. We know this won't happen by people preaching to someone who's already made up their mind about it anyway, so a waste of time.

But it's not individual...it's a beauty trend, just like other trends that come and go and now look outdated.

Get your lips done all you like, but don't try and claim it's about your individuality Confused.

shivawn · 12/05/2021 22:12

Hmmm you come off as quite judgemental OP and very defensive, sorry to say. People will make their own choices. Botox and filler are just temporary too, I know some people think that your face will collapse or whatever if you decide to stop but it will just wear off and go back to normal.

Mrbob · 12/05/2021 22:16

I am with you OP. But I don’t understand hair getting hair dyed, wearing make up or painting nails either on a regular basis so I am probably the opposite end of the spectrum from them Grin

booksandnooks · 12/05/2021 22:16

@SummaLuvin

People are incredibly snobby about fillers and botox.

I had braces when I was 12, nothing wrong with my jaw or mouth medically, I was just a bit toothy. I had 4 teeth pulled out and the braces in for 18 months. Just so my smile was 'prettier'. No-one comments on dental work done to actual children for cosmetic reasons. I struggle to really see how fillers and botox are so much worse, they are just less normalised and common which is why there is so much judgement.

As with anything surface level some people like it and some people don't. Like clothes, or hair styles, or make-up, fillers won't be everyones cup of tea, but nothing ever will be.

Dental work is different though, straight teeth are easier to manage. My teeth are crooked, it is not that bad but because they aren't straight the ones that are stuck behind have staining now and decay that is difficult to clean because they are overcrowded. I am going to get voices as soon as I can or else I may lose my front teeth. Not really a worry yet but as the years pass my teeth become more and more at risk, despite flossing and brushing more than average.
FrozenCucumberPresse · 12/05/2021 22:20

You remind me of the older women who’d come into the bank I was working at and tell me I’d look much better without ‘all of that metal’ (a nose ring and ear studs). Bore off.

Serpenta · 12/05/2021 22:22

Piercings are about adornment. Fillers etc. are about 'correcting'.

Ingridla · 12/05/2021 22:24

Yeh, I get where you're coming from as I think it's a shame young people all seem to love looking almost the same, big lips, huge statement false looking brows (which I do worry is permanent & will look hideous in years to come) but really, I mean it's nothing to do with me, or you.
