Overrated places in the UK

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

Bristol: Full of tedious rich kids who think liking bristol is a personality trait
See also: Brighton

Florida. Fucking horrid. Super expensive glossy theme parks surrounded by absolutely crippling poverty.

MilduraS · 12/05/2021 17:49

Agree with Cambridge. Never lived there, can't afford to live there but it's nearby. Every time I went there for work I almost collided with a cyclist. I remember taking an ex there (long distance relationship) and warning him on the park and ride to watch out for cyclists. Within 2 minutes of stepping off the bus an angry cyclist nearly took him out while furiously ringing his bell. It's a beautiful city and was probably lovely during lockdown but on an average day it's quite unpleasant.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 12/05/2021 17:49

York. It's pretty and has an interesting history with plenty of old and fascinating buildings but it's far too busy: if you want to slow down or stop to look at or admire something then you're in everyone's way and just get tutted at. It's also very expensive.

@GlutenFreeGingerCake

I did see someone say Worthing is the new Brighton the other day which could lead to some disappointment on a day out.
That actually made me lol. I have a flat in Brighton. The nightlife/shopping/theatre/yoga/restaurants there are amazing. Much as I love Worthing I don't think the two towns are comparable.
Tarragonvinegar · 12/05/2021 17:50

Disagree with whoever said Cotswolds - I think that area is stunning and only crowded in a couple of places like Burford, Bourton on the Water and Stow.

Inextremis · 12/05/2021 17:50

Dungeness. I have never seen so much shingle in my life. It's like a wasteland.

Tossblanket · 12/05/2021 17:50

Newquay.

Thought is was a shithole.

Twinkie01 · 12/05/2021 17:50

Cornwall

SuziQuatrosFatNan · 12/05/2021 17:51

Is that the Florida near Newcastle or the Florida near Wolverhampton?

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 12/05/2021 17:51

Stratford upon Avon, lost its old charm and many pubs are neglected and run by chains.
Imagine if they were independent or in a small chain that could make the most of the incredible history.

PermanentTemporary · 12/05/2021 17:51

Loving this thread. I think I like nearly everywhere on here, especially Stonehenge.

BlueLobelia · 12/05/2021 17:51

[please don;t say Salisbury, please don;t say Salisbury... looks at diary for confirmed Salisbury weekend in 3 weeks.]

Confusedandshaken · 12/05/2021 17:51

@Surferofwaves

Surrey- full of boring wankers obsessed with schools, the Jones', property prices and washing their cars.

I absolutely love most of the places people hate on here though. Brighton, Bath, London, Bristol.. love love love

Lol at your view of Surrey. I live in Surrey, just outside Croydon which is probably better known for stealing cars than washing them.
sHREDDIES19 · 12/05/2021 17:52

I absolutely loathe Birmingham, sorry! I’ve been so many times for work and having some down time have explored it well but apart from the shops, I get a sense of dread!

SparePantsAndLego · 12/05/2021 17:52

Isle of Wight. The festival was great, as was the weather but we chose to stay longer and see as much of the place as we could. Wish we hadn’t, it was a depressing time warp.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 12/05/2021 17:52

Im from Norfolk originally and am touched no one has said any bits of it are overrated...yet 😅

Crinkle77 · 12/05/2021 17:53

Anthony Gormley's Another Place at Crosby beach in Liverpool. Don't get me wrong I like going down there for a walk but if I was a tourist I'd be disappointed. Its a bit scruffy.

MaMaLa321 · 12/05/2021 17:53

I live in Bristol, and it beats living in the countryside, but sometimes I get tired of the general level of fuckwittery. Plus the bloody cyclists on the pavement.

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:54

Trafford centre is awful!
I nearly said London but some parts are ok. I only go to meet friends and for the occasional shopping trip and I always leave with a headache.
Agree with Bristol, when I’ve been I always go to the same bit which seems to be the only nice bit but it’s a bit grim in other bits.
Also Anglesey. I really didn’t understand the fuss when I went.
And another one, hadrians wall. I was so disappointed.

I love Stratford upon Avon though.
The Lake District is amazing but I only go when it’s nice weather as it’s local. Same for the Yorkshire Dales, lovely but I only go in nice weather.

Oxford is also disappointing, some areas are nice but the center could be a so much nicer.

I hear it has a beautiful cathedral...
SquirrelFan · 12/05/2021 17:55

@SmidgenofaPigeon We're the same! Are there any places you would recommend for getting away for nondrivers?

MarthaJonesPhone · 12/05/2021 17:57

Brighton - grotty and full of wankers!

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 12/05/2021 17:57

The Lake District but unfortunately DH loves it there, not so keen on Cornwall but elderly DF lives there so we go down each year to visit and because it is so far (Penzance) we always stay a week or two and take the caravan.

oneglassandpuzzled · 12/05/2021 17:57

I like the IoW
