Overrated places in the UK

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

I love most of the places mentioned on here!

Well, someone has to rate them for them to be overrated grin

I know!! 😂
I was just trying to bring a bit of positivity to the thread!!!

Violaaa · 13/05/2021 11:38

All the places mentioned, I would say, are more expensive than a lot of other parts of the UK. Particularly London and Brighton.
If they were so awful people wouldn't live there.
I'm glad people are happy and not moany bastards where I live. Though you keep slating Brighton, I've not been anywhere where people always look like they're having a good time. Yes, stay in Boring Cobham if you can't bare to see people having a good time. Stay there with Brian and Colin. Miserable old bastards.

Melitza · 13/05/2021 11:39

@SmidgenofaPigeon can't believe you don't make the effort to wear your pearly queen outfit on your commute! Grin

A futile endeavour. A bit like going litter-picking in Brighton.

babybunny123 · 13/05/2021 11:41

Ribby Hall near Blackpool

notacooldad · 13/05/2021 11:41

I would like to visit Brighton. My son and his girlfriend went last summer and had the most fantastic time. They hired bikes and explored.
Ds is is usually likes more rugged places like Skye, so I didn't think it would be his cup of tea but he has recommed it for me and his dad.

FatherBuzzCagney · 13/05/2021 11:42

CHISistoast That must have been a disappointment! Were you at the High School? I was, though probably long before you (am old git).

Lincslady53 what a lovely, slightly Alan Bennett-y, story.

Really want to see the Minster and Yorvik Centre

What didn't you like about Ribby Hall? Genuine question. I've not stayed there but pre covid we took some kids swimming there a couple of times as guests but I never looked around round. People seem to really like it.

Not just moaning though is it, some posts are just plain nasty, like the poster who said Cornwall was full of backward people....just nasty sorry.

Proudboomer · 13/05/2021 11:49

I quite enjoyed Great Yarmouth but it is too windy for me to want to go back.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 13/05/2021 11:49

Brighton is just a bit too wanky for me but I have friends who adore the place.

Cotswolds - I don’t really get the appeal as if I want countryside I want rugged.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/05/2021 11:50

@WouldBeGood

The fucking Highlands and Islands. Bleak as fuck.
Good job we're all different! That's what I love about them.

I was underwhelmed by Brighton. Not a fan of shingle beaches.

I’d rather go to the Peak District than the Lake District. Now that is over rated.

York - The shambles is a nice street with some crappy shops. The minster is overcrowded and dusty and the bridges are just bridges.

Blackpool - hell hole.

London - Overpriced and overhyped.

Ambleside - busy.

Manchester - if you're not going shopping there's no point.

Not ALL of London is overpriced.

As I said before the museums are fantastic and free which cannot be said of museums in other countries. We needed a mortgage to visit the museums in Sweden!

The parks are, obviously, free. The art galleries are free. Walking on Hampstead Heath, along the South Bank, around Borough Market, Spitalfields Market free.

There is a great veggie indian restaurant in Covent Garden and a delicious meal there is cheaper than a meal in any of my local indian restaurants in the Midlands!

Haven't read the whole thread (I'd get sacked!) but have noticed a lot of comments on Brighton. Totally agree! Terrible place! DH has got family there, and we've stayed a couple of times. I had expected something vibrant and cosmopolitan, and it was just crap and scruffy with a terrible stony beach. Wouldn't live there in a million years!! I'm normally as kind as possible about lots of things in life, but if you want me to be critical of anything, Brighton gets it!

Applesonthelawn · 13/05/2021 11:57

Lake District. Really depressing.

FlippinFedUp21 · 13/05/2021 11:57

The Lakes. I live relatively close (easy for day trips) but it's always too busy and I find that stressful. Finding a parking place, everything's expensive, and there are equally beautiful places in the country that aren't totally packed.

FlippinFedUp21 · 13/05/2021 11:57

Apples we posted our hatred of the Lakes and the same time down to the second!

skybluee · 13/05/2021 11:58

While I don't like London because I'm not a big fan of cities and crowds, I fail to see how anyone could honestly think it's over-rated. When you look at all it has to offer it's incredible and is truly a world-class city. I don't want to list all of the attractions but there's a lot it has on offer.

Cambridge

Bristol- i was surprised at how run down the central shopping area is

Shoreditch

notacooldad · 13/05/2021 12:06

I can understand what people are saying about why they think the Lakes are over rated.
I do like going there and its fairly accessible fir me but I think timing is everything. I would not go to the honey spots in the Lakes on a weekend/ bank holiday/ school holidays. I know that is very limiting for a lot of people. Out of peak times it is different. 2 years ago I went up Campbell at 4'oclock in the afternoon in May and had the fell to myself.
Another thing is to go away from the popular tourist attractions of you like exploring. Within the distance of a relatively few miles there's a different world to the packed out streets of Windermere or Ambleside.

Barmouth. Full of dog shit all over the pavement, couldn’t enjoy walking anywhere because it was so dirty.
