Overrated places in the UK

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

Snowdonia

looptheloopinahulahoop · 12/05/2021 17:25

Most coastal towns. They are usually not all that, especially in the winter.

Anywhere that the aspirational middle classes flock to like Whitstable, West Wittering and Cornwall. Nice but not that that nice.

My son would agree with Gemma and The Queef about Stonehenge Grin I think a big fence needs to go up alongside it to stop all the aforementioned Cornwall-bound tourists stopping to look at it and holding everyone else up.

It's a bit harsh to say the IOW is a big version of Rhyl! The IOW is very pretty. Rhyl, not so much but it's near lovely scenery.

JadedStrumpet · 12/05/2021 17:25

Bath. I really wanted to love it but honestly can't see what the fuss is all about.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/05/2021 17:26

Definitely Stonehenge.

tigerbread20 · 12/05/2021 17:27

Was so underwhelmed by Edinburgh, walked round for 4 days thinking "why have I bothered flying up here"

Tambora · 12/05/2021 17:27

Malvern
Bath
Oxford
Cambridge
Weston Super Mare
Brighton

Centre parcs

LubaLuca · 12/05/2021 17:28

Bath. It's okay, but nowhere near as special as I thought I'd find it.

dodobookends · 12/05/2021 17:28

@DrManhattan You beat me to it!

Blyatiful · 12/05/2021 17:29

Harrogate. Up it’s own arse.
Brighton. Dirty and sleazy with a shit beach.

ExpatInBritain · 12/05/2021 17:31

Everywhere. Still love the UK but I've never gone anywhere people rated highly and found it as impressive as they went on about. Still lovely but perhaps I had higher expectations.

DrManhattan · 12/05/2021 17:31

@dodobookends
There may be more who agree xxx

BrumBoo · 12/05/2021 17:31

The IOW is very pretty.

It's hardly outstanding, and as I said some of its main features, like beaches, are rubbish! In my visits, I've never seen anything that's worth the ferry ride that you can't get in another part of the UK. At least based in Rhyl you can get to the mountains, castles, blue flag beaches, or decent cities without huge extra travel - Rhyl has more positives!

midsomermurderess · 12/05/2021 17:32

Cornwall. I'm glad I went, it scratched an itch, so to speak, but it wasn't worth the trip all the way there and back. Some of the villages rather reminded me of the East Neuk, just 40 minutes anyway from me, and if you want dramatic coastlines, crashing waves, well you can't beat Scotland. If you're from London or the Midlands, then maybe it is a bit wow.

LST · 12/05/2021 17:32

I'd say Devon. Nice enough, but it was a trek and Wales is just as good!

MadMadMadamMim · 12/05/2021 17:32

For me, anywhere that's busy and overcrowded. Which is a pity, because I like History and I'm interested to see places like Anne Hathaway's cottage, the Bronte Parsonage and Beatrix Potter's cottage.

And almost all of these places are swamped with tourists.

You can put a tick next to almost any town/city/county that is popular and I'll probably avoid it simply because I hate crowds.

I don't really get the appeal of Spa towns in general but people like them.

Thats my argument with Devon and probably Cornwall (though I've never been) for the journey North Wales has everything I need!
minniemomo · 12/05/2021 17:33

@JustCatting

I did live near there, didn't like living there but ok to visit (an American making me miss my hourly bus with her insistence for a photo and grabbing my pram when I said no I didn't have time was there final straw)

SuziQuatrosFatNan · 12/05/2021 17:34

Places like Bath, Edinburgh and York that market a People's Friend Magazine vibe and are full of hen parties and shops selling the most atrocious shit.

Brighton for not having a proper beach and featuring lots of wankers.

The Lake District. It's pretty but there's dogs everywhere. Just too many fucking dogs.

FizzyPink · 12/05/2021 17:34

Oh dear, we’re booked to go to the Isle of Wight in a few weeks and this is the second thread it’s been slated on Confused

My contribution is the Cotswolds. You have to drive a lot to get around and there’s not really very much to see in each village. Plus the crowds make it pretty difficult to see anything anyway.

Chickychickydodah · 12/05/2021 17:34

London.
Too expensive, overrated and dirty...

sapnupuas · 12/05/2021 17:35

@Gemma2019

Stonehenge. It's a bit shit.
I knew there was somewhere I'd been that I thought was shite.

Stonehenge. Thank you.

Just. Big. Stones.

Tittybittybangbang · 12/05/2021 17:36

I thought Totnes and Stroud would be nicer than they were given I knew loads of people moving there.

Slub · 12/05/2021 17:36

Stratford on Avon
