Overrated places in the UK

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

There was a phenomenal amount of dog shit when we visited the Lakes, but overall I liked the place. Spent a lot of time looking down to make sure I didn't step in shit though.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 12/05/2021 18:07

@SquirrelFan we are trying Conwy in June... trains to Llandudno and a few other bits and Betws-y-coed where the National park is...we just want to base ourselves somewhere nice where we can walk or take public transport! We’ll walk miles but it seeks like a road always gets in the way. Unless it’s a city break which we’d really just do for a weekend it always seems so tricky to actually holiday somewhere properly without a car...But I have high hopes for this one 😅

MrsBunHat · 12/05/2021 18:07

Edinburgh, I'm sure its lovely and I must be missing something.

I live there and it's beautiful, old and atmospheric (in parts) but I've never quite got on with it or understood the vibe. There's something uptight and unimaginative about it. It's not... warm. (I don't mean the weather, though that too) I can't move away yet but I will!

I liked Stonehenge but the cafe was shockingly pants.

Also Tobermory. Talk about a wasted opportunity! It looks lovely in pictures and was a big destination for families for a while because of Balamory. You get there and it's just one pretty street, the rest is just desolate, odd depressing/closed cafes, smelly waterfront and pubs where the grumpy locals stare at you when you dare to go in.

Tagaagajavdv · 12/05/2021 18:07

Yorkshire, I’m from there. People who aren’t from there tell me how ‘nice’ it is. It isn’t

WouldBeGood · 12/05/2021 18:08

The fucking Highlands and Islands. Bleak as fuck.

MamaWeasel · 12/05/2021 18:09

Def. cornwall!

transformandriseup · 12/05/2021 18:10

There is beauty in all parts of the UK but over commercialised tourist attractions are always a let down. Lands End is one of them.

Zzzzzzxxx · 12/05/2021 18:10

Oh I lived in Bristol. I couldn’t wait to move out of the place. It was the worst place I’ve ever lived

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 12/05/2021 18:11

@Puttingouthefirewithgasoline

Stratford upon Avon, lost its old charm and many pubs are neglected and run by chains. Imagine if they were independent or in a small chain that could make the most of the incredible history.
Even the smaller one's are soulless & don't really care for the history. For many years Stratford has had the only pub in the U.K. called The Salmon Tail, so called because the fields were owned by the Salmon family & that end tapered to a tail shape. It's been taken over by a small chain, they've changed the name & are giving it an 'Irish theme' because of it's proximity to the racecourse signed a bitter ex local Grin
MishMashMummy · 12/05/2021 18:11

The Lake District. It’s just a less impressive and much more crowded attempt at the Scottish highlands.

Shmithecat2 · 12/05/2021 18:11

The history behind Stonehenge is far more interesting than the monument itself. Although I do remember visiting it a few times (lived near by) years ago before it was all fenced off. The stones are pretty impressive close up.

IrmaFayLear · 12/05/2021 18:12

There are simply too many people going to holiday-type places. I think I’ll go on holiday this year to Luton or Basingstoke.... I may be able to walk along pavements there in peace and find a spot in a cafe....

TheQueef · 12/05/2021 18:13

@TheAlphaandtheOmega

I thought Stonehenge was English Heritage not NT, maybe it's both.
Aye might be.

One of those ridiculous cons.

WouldBeGood · 12/05/2021 18:13

@IrmaFayLear I had a thread asking for just such destinations in order to avoid the hordes. 😃

bloodywhitecat · 12/05/2021 18:14

Another vote for Cambridge.

motherloaded · 12/05/2021 18:15

England

ok for a weekend, not so much for an actual holiday

Purplebunnie · 12/05/2021 18:15

Brighton is awful.
Just as a note Stonehenge is not NT its English Heritage

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/05/2021 18:15

I was disappointed by Bath and Oxford.

Portsmouth, did one of those tourist buses and it seemed to mainly consist of telling us what was there 'before the war'. They seemed to have only build back f***g ugly.

BumCat · 12/05/2021 18:15

I agree with the Isle of Wight! Gave me the heebie-jeebies.

Brighton is shit, too. But I’ve already said that on here in the last few weeks. Grin

RevolutionRadio · 12/05/2021 18:15

Blackpool, Whitby

SmidgenofaPigeon · 12/05/2021 18:16

@SuziQuatrosFatNan thanks for the Northumberland tip- that’s good to know Smile

Tambora · 12/05/2021 18:16

DH (going somewhat further afield) nominates the Grand Canyon.

SafferUpNorth · 12/05/2021 18:16

Land's End.... grim, commercialised tourist trap. In a lovely spot though. Overall I love Cornwall but Lands End is just depressing.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 12/05/2021 18:16

Smidgenofapigeon Norfolk. I know lots of people who love it, but it just doesn't appeal.
The Isle of Wight

footprintsintheslow · 12/05/2021 18:17

@LIZS

Snowdonia
