Overrated places in the UK

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:12

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

@FizzyPink

Oh dear, we’re booked to go to the Isle of Wight in a few weeks and this is the second thread it’s been slated on Confused

My contribution is the Cotswolds. You have to drive a lot to get around and there’s not really very much to see in each village. Plus the crowds make it pretty difficult to see anything anyway.

@FizzyPink ignore the haters. I even managed to take a teenager to the Isle of Wight and we had a great time.

We took bikes and cycled the old railway track, we did go-karting, lots of boot fairs, visited the 2 NT places by the Needles. Very interesting Victorian vs. 1960s space race. Went on the isle of wight railway - I had tried hard to get the teenager into work experience - didnt quite happen but I am still working on it! Osborne house is fabulous (I had to drown out teenager boredom noises - lalala I'm not listening worked, followed by the bananas song - that worked a treat). We had a really good time.

Even stayed in a helicopter!

We will go back. Love it.

Brighton

Bearnecessity · 12/05/2021 20:17

I am surprised at all the Brighton haters too I lived there from 1994 to 2000 people were raving about it and gagging to move in.....it must have gone seriously down hill. I must have had the good times....

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 12/05/2021 20:17

@YouKnowItsTrue you don't do Oxford Street, that's how. Anyone who actually lives in London avoids it like the plague. It's purely for tourists and out of towners.

Iwaskissinvalentino · 12/05/2021 20:17

l knew Brighton would get a hammering. I live in Brighton and I love it but it's true, full of wankers.

I met someone last week who had just moved from London and said she had lived in North London for a bit but some of the people were a bit annoying and pretentious. Errrr.... Welcome to Brighton!

WhyMeLord · 12/05/2021 20:17

This may have already been mentioned but Stonehenge, the visitor centre, car park etc is 'owned' by English Heritage but the land it sits and that surrounds it is owned by the national trust, if you are a national trust member you can get in free despite it being an English Heritage monument. We spotted this in tiny writing on a sign as we were queuing to pay then got in free (and exchanged the car parking fee again the cost of the audio guide), it paid for half the cost of our annual NT membership in a single trip! (and I thought it great, so there Wink)

AFS1 · 12/05/2021 20:17

@Gottalovesummer

Bristol

I've been visiting for years as have family and friends there.

It gets raved about as a cool place to live but I just can't see why.

It’s a fantastic place to live, but I don’t really see the appeal in visiting it, if I’m honest. When people come to visit us, it’s often a bit of a struggle to think of where to take them!

@SuziQuatrosFatNan

Places like Bath, Edinburgh and York that market a People's Friend Magazine vibe and are full of hen parties and shops selling the most atrocious shit.

Brighton for not having a proper beach and featuring lots of wankers.

The Lake District. It's pretty but there's dogs everywhere. Just too many fucking dogs.

Can I just ask what does it mean to market "a people's friend magazine" totes confused please explain thanks
Ellpellwood · 12/05/2021 20:18

I lived in Bath for a year and always wonder how people fill a 3-day weekend. It's nice to walk around and take photos but ultimately it's got a Wetherspoons, TK Maxx, Primark and WH Smiths like any other town. And it's really small!

spongedog · 12/05/2021 20:18

My personal fave place that I think is beyond overrated in the UK is the Lake District. Always rains and its cold. No thank you. We visit friends in the NW - they always offer the Lake District. No thanks! I would like to see more of the towns and cities. I loved Liverpool, would like to get to know Manchester better and dont know anything about Preston, Bolton, Salford etc.

SimonJT · 12/05/2021 20:18

@SteveArnottsCodeine

London. Go there and I guarantee you'll either be mugged or not appreciated.
I’ve lived in London since the age of 17, I’ve never been mugged. Someone did attempt to mug me in Chester once though.

I’m confused about “not appreciated” what do you mean (english not my first language)?

Angelil · 12/05/2021 20:18

Hay-on-Wye.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 12/05/2021 20:19

@MasterBeth God it’s been raved about to me, both by family members (I judge you Aunty D) and friends who have visited from abroad. What am I missing?!

newtb · 12/05/2021 20:21

Wilmslow and Alderley Edge

Sunny68 · 12/05/2021 20:21

@therearenogoodusernamesleft

You can see Stonehenge for free from the public paths at the back Grin

I disliked Liverpool and Birmingham - they're not well designed cities and lack character.

Brighton always depresses me because of the drugs issue.

Stratford Upon Avon is soulless.

Leamington spa - everyone looked really rundown

.... as opposed to the drug issues in London, Manchester, Bristol or Surrey??? 🤔
Darbs76 · 12/05/2021 20:22

I love London. Bored of London, bored of life.

I’d say Cornwall - great beaches but signal is terrible! Haha

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 12/05/2021 20:22

@Angelil

Hay-on-Wye.
Oooh I used to go there a lot, can I ask what disappointed you? Was it for the festival? Sorry to be nosey Smile
MumofSpud · 12/05/2021 20:23

100% Brighton - has a really grim weekend there a couple of years ago.

MumofSpud · 12/05/2021 20:23

Oh and Edinburgh

Thank you . I didnt know that. Bloody cheek - they dont make that obvious.

And yes it is very interesting on the audio tour.

IndigoC · 12/05/2021 20:25

Yes, Stonehenge, up there with Pisa for overrated tourist attractions.

I was also disappointed in the Peak District. I expected something on par with the Lake District. It was not...

Workingfromhomeishell · 12/05/2021 20:25

Buckinghamshire

watingroom2 · 12/05/2021 20:25

If you think stonehenge is shit - check out car henge !

I love London and Worthing

Songbyrd · 12/05/2021 20:25

Cambridge definitely. Lived there for a year and found it really elitist and unfriendly, barely any nightlife, narrow overcrowded streets etc etc

spongedog · 12/05/2021 20:26

I managed 2 years ago on my own! I came down for an event and wanted to see the sites! I did get fed up though with everything blocked off for filming!
