Overrated places in the UK

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:12

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

Llangollen. I live nearby and it has a really seedy underbelly, and the pubs are as rough as fuck. Proper look at someone the wrong way and get a glass in your face.

Pyewackect · 12/05/2021 20:00

Dublin isn't in the UK. The city isn't great to visit unless you know where to go and what to do. Which most tourists don't. Then it's pretty awesome.

You could prbably say that of anywhere mentioned on here.

MasterBeth · 12/05/2021 20:00

@OnceUponAMidnightBeery

I’d also avoid Swindon, it seemed completely soulless. But it did make a good cheap-ish base from which to travel to other places.

Hereford is quite depressing now, a lot of empty shops after the last year. And way too much traffic. Shame as it used to be a vibrant, eclectic town centre, with a great mix of mainstream and independent shops.

How is Swindon overrated? No-one ever said, “When you visit the UK, you must visit Swindon!”
JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 12/05/2021 20:01

I know it’s a ‘which place is overrated’thread but I have to say I absolutely LOVE Liverpool. Never not had a good time up there. Love when my scouse mates come to visit me down South. Much love for that city and it’s people.

Back on topic. Kent. Never had a good time. Every time we’ve been DH and I have scratched our heads as to where the term ‘Garden of England’ came from unless it was referring to growing ‘extreme patriots’ Hmm. Tonbridge Wells is pretty though.

AndromedaGal · 12/05/2021 20:01

Stratford Upon Avon. Just didn’t see what all the fuss was about. Dirty, overpriced restaurants, no feeling of character, ugly layout. Soulless place.

Glastonbury in and of itself is sooooo overrated. Loads of drugged up people wandering around in the mud, you have to walk bloody miles to get to a music tent, too expensive, full of wankers, just wanted to go home. And I was only 19, I was so excited to be going at the time. It’s had its heyday.

Brighton is full of wannabes who think they’re alternative & contemporary. It’s really irritating although the restaurants are second to none. The vibe is amazing there however.

Love the Isle if Wight, it’s charming & pretty & the stuck-in-the1950’s thing is part of its unique appeal. It’s a great place for kiddies, as you can have a proper old fashioned seaside holiday, buckets & spades & ice-cream on the pier. I find it so peaceful there

Do people actually research places they visit before they go? Some of the comments on here suggest not - either because they have been surprised when they got there the there wasn't much to do (a quick google would have told you that, so maybe a place to stop over on the way somewhere else), or because they haven't visited the places in that areas that are worth visiting, or expect to be able to see everything from the car rather than on foot.

We were talking to friends who really didn't like a holiday destination we loved, because they thought place X where they stayed was a dump. We agreed with that but asked them about all the other places we'd been to and loved (all easily accessible by car or public transport) and they hadn't been to anywhere but the 'dump', in a whole week. But still tell anyone who will listen not to go there because 'there is nothing to see or do'.

sergeilavrov · 12/05/2021 20:02

@MasterBeth I don't know, my dad used to like going there every few weeks for a go on the roundabouts. He'd probably do a full weekend break there if my mum would let him.

littlepattilou · 12/05/2021 20:02

@DanielODonkey

Re: mancunians being best people in the world. That is part of the issue with Manchester. Mancunians telling everyone about how great they and the city are with absolutely no evidence to show it. It's a really overrated.
I'm afraid I agree a bit with this too. ^

Been to Manchester twice in the past 4 years. Wasn't impressed. I much prefer Liverpool!

Maybe Manchester is more aimed at/geared up to the young. I'm a 50-something old codger, and so is DH, and we felt out of place there. Everyone seemed super trendy, glam, and about 30 years younger!

Bloodypunkrockers · 12/05/2021 20:03

Perth

Dirty, town centre full of junkies and newly released prisoners

Neonprint · 12/05/2021 20:04

Sorry not sorry to be that person but the snobbery on here is fucking gross.

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 12/05/2021 20:05

You can see Stonehenge for free from the public paths at the back Grin

I disliked Liverpool and Birmingham - they're not well designed cities and lack character.

Brighton always depresses me because of the drugs issue.

Stratford Upon Avon is soulless.

Leamington spa - everyone looked really rundown

fishonabicycle · 12/05/2021 20:05

I bloody love the peak District and have been there lots of times!

SteveArnottsCodeine · 12/05/2021 20:06

London. Go there and I guarantee you'll either be mugged or not appreciated.

girlmama32 · 12/05/2021 20:08

Edinburgh during festival season and Christmas time, too many people crammed into what are usually lovely areas.

I’ve lived in London for over 10 years and never once been mugged and I’d hope I’m appreciated Grin
Angelica789 · 12/05/2021 20:09

I’ve never got on with Manchester.

Bath is an interesting one. I think it is pretty but there’s just a dearth of culture there. There’s nothing beneath the surface. If you spend a couple of hours walking around and seeing the famous sights then there’s absolutely no need to stay longer.

lynsey91 · 12/05/2021 20:09

@3scape

Cornwall. But then pretty much the whole of the UK. Now you're allowed 'out' I just cannot think of a single place compelling enough to visit.
What a sad and depressing post.

I would hate to be as negative as you.

We live in a beautiful country with lots of interesting places to visit. I have a long list of places me and DH want to go - some we have been to before and some new places

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 12/05/2021 20:10

I used to love York, but it's been ruined by stag/hen parties, and the races.

I lived there for 40 years and go back all the time. Never been mugged.

We never get bored of London. So much to see and do

Steamfan · 12/05/2021 20:12

Rhyl, Talacre, Colwyn Bay, Chester, Liverpool

Sugarplumfairy65 · 12/05/2021 20:14

York. It's impossible to navigate in a wheelchair and the council have recently stopped blue badge holders from parking anywhere near the city centre.

CoastAlong · 12/05/2021 20:14

Also Tobermory. Talk about a wasted opportunity! It looks lovely in pictures and was a big destination for families for a while because of Balamory. You get there and it's just one pretty street, the rest is just desolate, odd depressing/closed cafes, smelly waterfront and pubs where the grumpy locals stare at you when you dare to go in.

You maybe visited on a bad day. The locals in Tobermory are usually very welcoming to visitors.

Hairbrush123 · 12/05/2021 20:14

Mmm. How long do you have?

Brighton: I’ve been once and I won’t rush back. Awful beach, quite dirty even in touristy parts, really bad homeless problem, the buildings looks like they’re falling apart. I honestly fail to see the appeal.

Manchester: the shopping centre (Arndale) is awful, again parts of the city looks quite dirty, quite mediocre compared to Liverpool IMHO. I won’t be rushing back there. I’ve never understood the appeal of manchester other than football.

Sunny68 · 12/05/2021 20:14

😂😂😂 Ok genuine question, those of you saying Brighton is full of wankers, what does that mean exactly? I sincerely want to know as we are thinking of moving there 😳😳😳😳
