Overrated places in the UK

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

Whitby, I went once on a misty cold day in July. A junkie was singing and the paving stones were damp. There was a massive queue for fish and chips. I wanted to kill myself.

The Lakes, I went there once on a misty cold day in July. A lady in a pristine bungalow folded a tea towel and glowered at me. A Polish waiter served me a microwave meal. I wanted to leave and never return.

@RockingMyFiftiesNot afraid most of my examples are from many years ago, and pretty much Sun holidays Grin we had fun though!

Are you Alan Bennett? Brilliant writing. Grin

Southport. Don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned so I guess it isn’t rated in the first place, but whenever it’s a nice day my mum says ‘Why not go to southport!’

Reality is the tide is always far, far out, so there is no sea so much as miles of sludge. The pier bit is bleak. Yes, some nice old shop fronts, but inside will be a charity shop, a cheap tea shop... or closed. My favourite thing there is Waterstones.

Intrigued by op’s altrincham is polluted comment. Not more than anywhere nearby from what I’ve noticed. I grew up there and live a few miles away. I think it’s massively overhyped and consequently overpriced, but it does have leafy streets and lovely old buildings so I’m still a fan.

This Mancunian goes to Dunham Massey because I prefer it to tatton park, which has cars and cyclists everywhere Grin

Liverpool is underrated if anything. Never had so much FUN as when I worked there, and I loved the old buildings and watching the cruise ships come in on my lunch break.

In what way did Chester let people down?? Apart from the person who was almost mugged. That I understand could lead you to take against a place!

LolaSmiles · 12/05/2021 20:30

York. It used to be nice, but the last few times I visited it was full of drunk hen and stag parties by 3pm and much more crowded than I remember.

Skyliner001 · 12/05/2021 20:30

Cotswolds

SuziQuatrosFatNan · 12/05/2021 20:31

The best thing about Southport is that you can see Blackpool tower in the distance....

I love Chester. We camp in our van on the Roo Dee car park!

😂😂😂 Ok genuine question, those of you saying Brighton is full of wankers, what does that mean exactly? I sincerely want to know as we are thinking of moving there 😳😳😳😳
If you go to Brighton in the summer and go to the beach between the piers it will be full of people down from that there London. Everyone who lives in Brighton knows not to go there. That's why the people who live there don't hate Brighton, they don't go to the touristy places. I've been to the pier once in twenty years. I think it's a great place to live, loads going on, especially for families, beautiful countryside, but perhaps not for the visiting because it's awful hard to park.
StaffRepFeistyClub · 12/05/2021 20:34

Elmbridge - full of old people, stale ideas, mini dictators! Same old people on all the committees who throw a hissy fit if they don't get their own way. NIMBY central

Fullyhuman · 12/05/2021 20:34

@SmidgenofaPigeon

@SquirrelFan

Scilly Isles are brilliant for non-drivers as no one takes a car there (ferry is foot passenger only). You check your bags in on the ferry and they take them to your B&B/holiday house. It is utterly beautiful there.

YesThisIsMe · 12/05/2021 20:34

I like most of the places mentioned on this thread. Even Oxford Street, which is really handy to get to because the shops are open so late, there are loads of nice places to grab a bite to eat one block back and John Lewis is an oasis of calm and sanity.

The exceptions are Loch Ness which is pretty but sodding freezing and the Lake District which is pretty but full. They need to install these signs on every junction from the M6.

Dungeness is the equivalent of a three hour black and white film from Albania about goat farmers with no explosions of car chases. Saying you appreciate makes you look deep and as if you have sophisticated tastes. As it happens I’ve spent a lot of time there and genuinely love it, but then I am very deep and sophisticated…

Back in 1993 I needed up at a rave near stone henge watching the sun come up over it, absolutely epic 😂

BiscoffAddict · 12/05/2021 20:35

I also Manchester think is very grimy and nowhere near as nice Liverpool.

EarthSight · 12/05/2021 20:35

Bourton-on-the-Water. They call it the Venice of the Cotswolds but when you arrive it's mostly coach loads of pensioners wandering around, wondering what on earth there is to do. Yes, it's nice, but if I were a trip organiser I definitely wouldn't leave a coach load of people there for the entire afternoon.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 12/05/2021 20:37

@Fullyhuman that one is definitely on my list Smile

3totheright4totheleft · 12/05/2021 20:37

Kynance Cove. Thousands of people, NT charge loads for parking, and once you've scrambled down there there's nowhere to sit as it's all rocks! Found a much nice and flatter beach nearby.
Love Brighton though, but that's because I went to uni there so I know where everything is, which I like when it comes to corralling the family.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/05/2021 20:37

Was going to say Brighton but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Brighton exactly, but it isn’t anything like the way it’s described! Not multi cultural at all for one thing.

Also, it’s quite brutally “equalist”. Only cyclists and dog owners really catered for. Driving discouraged but bus routes are rubbish and no thought given to large elderly population. Crazy bike lanes on pavement on the busy sea front, with cyclists mowing down the elderly and others if they happen to stray. Parking permits strictly in order of waiting list, with no consideration given to need.

I used to live there! But that said the actual geography of the place is lovely. And there’s a good choice of shops, bars, restaurants etc.

cheeseychovolate · 12/05/2021 20:38

Stonehenge, definitely overrated
Trentham Gardens

EarthSight · 12/05/2021 20:38

@newtb

Wilmslow and Alderley Edge
@newtb Are those even 'rated' though? Surely not as tourist destinations?
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/05/2021 20:39

Brighton does have a proper beach though! Pebble beaches are fantastic!

Tangledtresses · 12/05/2021 20:39

Durdle door in Dorset
Awful bloody perilous walk down a cliff to a shingle beach, and then you have to hike back up with a tired 3 yr old

wheresmymojo · 12/05/2021 20:40

but I’m clouded by the woman in the Ivy who was being very explicit about what she wanted to do to one of the waiters in earshot of my four year old. It was a gathering for a cat fancy group, but the conversation was grim.

I don't know why but this made me laugh out loud...it's like some kind of weird comedy skit Grin
