To think Scotland will now get their independence in next few years after election result?

Just that really...SNP did absolutely brilliantly. Shows that the majority of the Scottish people are behind them. Am I right in thinking they will get their independence in a couple of years?

There no serous alternative. They are the least worst option. Many Scots, myself included, have never felt so politically homeless. So yes, they got more votes than any other part but nothing that indicates that Scotland would vote for independence

Userg1234 · 09/05/2021 22:15

Please as an English man it will be fantastic. Scotland cannot afford to be independent...free university places, free prescription....with having to take their share of the covid debt, the reduction of fossil fuel use...can't wait...what a laugh. They forget that they begged for union because they were bankrupt.

hattiecattie · 09/05/2021 22:18

@Userg1234 oh please 😂

Lightout · 09/05/2021 22:18

Someone please push me against the wall and kiss me passionately, make me weak at the knees I beg of you.

Pml

Nicola sturgeon wishes

hattiecattie · 09/05/2021 22:19

@Userg1234 if we are relying on England how come England can't afford the same?

Willow79 · 09/05/2021 22:23

I'm Scottish and I voted for independence first time round in my early 20s. I'm now late 20s and would do the same again.

The Tories will be in power for a long time to come - Labour are absolutely useless. The polls clearly show we are on different paths.

cocacolacastleoflurve · 09/05/2021 22:25

@Willow79 I'm the same! Early twenties then - late twenties now - would vote the same.

Iyland · 09/05/2021 22:25

Am also a bit hmm, at the " oh we can't afford it" bit. 65 countries have managed perfectly well without the UK babysitting them.

And I'm totally confused as to why - if we're such a drag on the UK economy and a black hole into which money is just being endlessly shovelled - are they so keen to keep us?

If I were English and believed Scotland was such a burden to their economy I would be hammering on the Westminster government's door to dissolve the union from THAT side of the border.

Graffitiqueen · 09/05/2021 22:29
@Graffitiqueen not sure if you're purposefully missing my point.
🙄 no you seem to be the one missing the point.

Willow79 · 09/05/2021 22:29

@cocacolacastleoflurve 2 of my friends who voted no have also said they would vote yes now. They are incensed every time someone like Michael Gove says Scots don't want another referendum.

I also know 2 former yessers who are now on the fence, having been put off by recent SNP policies and in fighting. Tbh I don't blame them, but I hope they come round.

bp300 · 09/05/2021 22:30

@Pugdogmom

I also know plenty who vote for SNP but don’t want independence. But if a vote was called they should learn from previous and make it minimum 65/70% want change and not just over!

And yet, we left the European Union on a lot less. It really isn't up to anyone to dictate what the percentage should be. If the majority of Scots want it, that's what should happen.

Am also a bit Hmm, at the " oh we can't afford it" bit. 65 countries have managed perfectly well without the UK babysitting them.

Well you couldn't afford it with your own currency. I suppose theres the option of becoming part of the EU and joining the Euro.

And the fact you have a penis is relevant how?

sst1234 · 09/05/2021 22:32

Boris only has to say ‘you can’t have sterling as your currency’ and Sturgeon will be violently wriggling around like a salted slug. We all know how that played out last time. The stark realities of independence are far more profound than SNP playing politics with this issue.

Livoey · 09/05/2021 22:32

I think the vote is tighter than it probably appears - probably 50/50 and could go either way. A referendum poses huge risks for Boris and Nicola Sturgeon. If they vote for independence, Boris will preside over the break up of the union. If they vote against, they’ll most likely never get another opportunity.

Do people who want independence understand Scotland will have to pay for all this themselves? I mean, obviously they must, but how do they think that happens?

I did wonder why that was relevant too.

If they vote against it, they’ll be back for another 5 years later. Once in a lifetime means keep going until you get the answer you want.

Because he could wave it to make a point.

Hard to do that with a foof.

Itwasjustresting · 09/05/2021 22:42

No chance. She had the best opportunity in the gap between the Brexit vote and the UK actually leaving the EU - but she didn’t take it.

What has changed now? SNP still need the Greens for a majority, so no difference to the previous parliament.

And I say this as someone who wants an Independent Scotland and until recently was an SNP member.

They are all too cosy with the current devolved situation. But I think the Tories intend to strip Holyrood of further powers.

She had the chance and she missed it.

Equally, a lot of Labour supporters are pro Independence.

There are certainly pro-Indy people who might call themselves Labour supporters, but other than maybe a second preference in the council elections they haven't actually voted Labour in years. Why would they, when the SNP run every election as though it's a mini referendum?

Maireas · 09/05/2021 22:47

Surely an independent Scotland wouldn't have sterling, it'd be the Bawbee.

cocacolacastleoflurve · 09/05/2021 22:48

Also when 37% of registered voters vote for Brexit its democracy. When SNP and Greens win a majority on a Indy mandate it's 'dismantling'. The hypocrisy is astounding

delilahbucket · 09/05/2021 22:49

I think there will be a referendum but I don't think she'll get the result she thinks she will. After that, hopefully she'll move on, because let's face it, she isn't interested in anything else about what her job entails.
