Just that really...SNP did absolutely brilliantly. Shows that the majority of the Scottish people are behind them. Am I right in thinking they will get their independence in a couple of years?

@cuju2407

I am strongly opposed to independence and I really fear for our future. I really hope people open their eyes to the financial impact it will have on us
Like people did with Brexit?

It's an ideology. People vote on the principle, not the consequence. The consequence is always vague and uncertain. And the opposition are scare mongering liars so...

@cuju2407 better pack yer bags then Grin there's a risk in everything and I understand it's scary but it's well overdue. The day we get our independence will be one of the best days of my life

What?! Have you actually looked at the numbers of votes? More than 50% votes for pro union parties.
Graffitiqueen · 09/05/2021 21:47
@SylviasMotherSaid that is in fact untrue
Well it is actually true. If you believe differently can you quote us the numbers of votes please?

Bathwater · 09/05/2021 21:52

I am against independence (from the borders originally and it would be a total mess day to day if it happened in my own personal opinion). I understand whose that are for it would want another vote but I would like recovery from COVID to be more realised at the very least. There was a lot of hate stirred up last time in my experience, by both sides and it was honestly awful.
I also know plenty who vote for SNP but don’t want independence. But if a vote was called they should learn from previous and make it minimum 65/70% want change and not just over!

TheSandman · 09/05/2021 21:52

@SylviasMotherSaid

The overall vote for Unionist parties was higher than the vote for the SNP.
And yet despite that the Unionists lost seats and the Independantists gained - in a system deliberately set up as rigged as possible to stop any party getting over-all control.

SNP and Green Party (both support Scottish independence) 72 seats

Toured, labour, Lib Dem 57 seats

NamechangedGamechanged12 · 09/05/2021 21:54

I hope so!! I’m personally sick of being run by Westminster. The sooner we get independence the better in my opinion. We didn’t went or vote for Brexit yet here we are 🤬

HOkieCOkie · 09/05/2021 21:57

If the Scottish want independence good luck to them..

Graffitiqueen · 09/05/2021 21:57

That's seats. Not votes. Now tray again with actual numbers of votes.
hattiecattie · 09/05/2021 21:58

@Graffitiqueen but it's seats that matter in getting another referendum so the votes are irrelevant. Also, don't be so condescending.

Really?! How many seats are there in an independence referendum?

jcyclops · 09/05/2021 22:01

Constituency Vote:
47.7% SNP
21.9% Conservative
21.6% Labour
6.9% Liberal
1.3 % Green
0.6% Other

Regional Vote:
40.3% SNP
23.5% Conservative
17.9% Labour
8.1% Green
5.1% Liberal
1.7% Alba

hattiecattie · 09/05/2021 22:02

@Graffitiqueen not sure if you're purposefully missing my point.

BottomOfTree · 09/05/2021 22:02

No I don’t think every vote for the snp for the Scottish parliament would translate into a vote for independence. It’s very different things. Many Scots votes snp to run Scottish govt because they are the “best worst choice” conservatives never do well here and Boris isn’t well liked (and generally it’s accepted Nicola made a better job of covid, at least pre vaccination stages, than Boris did!) and labour is just too awful to vote for anymore (uk wide except maybe wales).

I also don’t think Nicola wants it anytime soon. If she’s looses another referendum she’ll be out abs she doesn’t want that (she’s just survived all those Alex enquires after all!). I don’t think there is much of an appetite for indyref2 in the general population. The first referendum caused a lot of unsettled feeling in the country. Most of us just want a decently run Scottish govt to get on with sorting the country out post covid. I agree the barr for independence should be a 70% or so vote in favour not just 51%. I think it needs to be forgotten for at least 10 years (personally forever is preferable!)

MyCatIsADentist · 09/05/2021 22:05

Someone please push me against the wall and kiss me passionately, make me weak at the knees I beg of you.

Whoops wrong thread

🤣

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/05/2021 22:06

I bloody hope not.

However if wee nippy doesn’t get her second once in a generation desired indyref result, she’ll just greet for another one. And another. And another.

Thank Christ she doesn’t play football. Could you imagine if it went to penalties?

Vetyveriohohoh · 09/05/2021 22:07

On both constituency and regional lists snp + green got less than 50% when combined. Not exactly a clear mandate even before you take into consideration that not all snp voters are pro independence

jcyclops · 09/05/2021 22:08

Over the last month there have been 14 opinion polls on Scottish independence, only one of which showed a lead for independence.

Pugdogmom · 09/05/2021 22:11

I also know plenty who vote for SNP but don’t want independence. But if a vote was called they should learn from previous and make it minimum 65/70% want change and not just over!

And yet, we left the European Union on a lot less. It really isn't up to anyone to dictate what the percentage should be. If the majority of Scots want it, that's what should happen.

Am also a bit Hmm, at the " oh we can't afford it" bit. 65 countries have managed perfectly well without the UK babysitting them.

hattiecattie · 09/05/2021 22:11

But they still got the most as a stand alone party so they're doing well let's be honest

StoneofDestiny · 09/05/2021 22:12

Scotland should do it in their own time and when it's right for them. I certainly support an independent Scotland.

Pugdogmom · 09/05/2021 22:14

not all SNP supporters are for Independence
No, but majority are. Equally, a lot of Labour supporters are pro Independence.
