Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

It tastes (and smells) like bloody engine oil. Should be compulsory in Phil Mitchell’s garage.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 09/05/2021 23:14

Custard tarts.Jelly like almost savoury tasting 🤮

Everything I ate in France a few years ago. We drove to Italy on holiday and spent three nights in France as part of the journey. Stopped in Rheims and Strasbourg, as well as taking detours to small towns. All the food was extremely disappointing. We spent a night in Rheims on both the way there and back, went into the centre each time, as you do as a non-local. Faced with massively overpriced chain-looking places with uninspiring menus. Poor choice for vegetarians. On the second of the nights DH had a kebab in the street, which was apparently far better than anything else he’d had in a restaurant, and I ended up eating a gigantic pre-made cake after we struggled to find anything non-meaty. In Strasbourg we had crepes - frankly not great, and again, expensive. We thought we’d found the real deal when stopping at a small local restaurant for a fixed price lunch menu. Once again, not fantastic and very dear. Although at least that was cooked fresh unlike most of the other stuff we ate.

I’m sure if I’d known where to go, I’d have eaten well. But what a contrast with Italy - have been going for about twenty years now, and I can’t easily recall a mediocre meal. Excellent is the default. My french experience also compared really unfavourably with places not known for their cuisines like Bosnia and Romania.

Smokeahontas · 09/05/2021 23:16

Another one - piccalilli. Looks & tastes like radioactive waste.

QueenPaw · 09/05/2021 23:18

taramasalata. My dad was crunching through a tub with celery Envy
Take those two vile things away from me
Coriander tastes like soap
Pernod/anything aniseed but that's self inflicted
Fruit in cheese, also fruit in chocolate. I get a nice apple with cheese, or a pear. But if I want a slab of cheese or chocolate, don't ruin it with fruit!

I love goats cheese, crispy seaweed and sushi though

Lockdownlumpy · 09/05/2021 23:21

Any cheese with little bits of fruit in it.

Violife fakey 'cheese'. Foul.

Celeriac gratin. Recipe makes it sound lovely, creamy cheesey, celeriacy, but just vile.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2021 23:21

I think Pimms is horrible. You always get handed one at a boiling hot summer wedding with grass or something floating in it and you have to act grateful. When you just want a huge glass of Coke with lots of ice.

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 09/05/2021 23:32

Twisted kitchen wild garlic and rocket ravioli. It was delicious, but I found out to my detriment the next morning that is made from actual FUCKING LAXATIVES!!!

JustAddCoffee91 · 09/05/2021 23:33

Grapefruit!!
The name makes it sound so delicious, but no!
It's a horrid ball of fermented perfume!!

phodopus · 09/05/2021 23:36

Guacamole flavoured doritos. They tasted like soap.

OhWhyNot · 09/05/2021 23:43

Wagyu steak yes it was very nice but I’m not sure what I was expecting but it wasn’t as amazing as I had been lead to believe (and I love steak)

S’mores. It’s an American campfire sweet treat. A cracker sandwich of chocolate and marshmallow. The crackers are not particularly nice and the chocolate is horrible but my nephew and ds rave about them

Was very disappointed when I first tried an Oreo. I still can’t quite understand why they are the national biscuit. I love biscuits but will pass on these

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 09/05/2021 23:50

@cupsofcoffee

Hershey's chocolate. Cadbury's chocolate. Chicago Town pizza. Spinach. Herbal tea. Any instant hot chocolate drink.
The best not chocolate is Clipper in the big pinky purple 1kg tub. I have it on subscription from Amazon as my DD gets through about one a month!!
ohforarainyday · 09/05/2021 23:50

Itsu Seaweed Thins Sea Salt are revolting.

Agreed; inedible!

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 09/05/2021 23:50

Oh FFS HOT chocolate!!

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 09/05/2021 23:52

Aperol Spritz. Everyone on here raves about them, as do friends who go on posh holidays, so I bought a bottle and thought I’d give it a go. Tasted like earwax.

YouKnowItsTrue · 09/05/2021 23:55

I also noticed an odd taste with all American baked goods. To me there's a taste of chemicals and too much sugar. I remember when my dad visited the first time and was disgusted at American apple pies - even the 'better' ones. They use far too much sugar. I do my own baking now.

Yes I agree with this!! I bought a key lime pie while I was on holiday in Florida, thinking it would taste how it should be. Vile. It had a horrible plastic taste and was way too sweet to eat. It didn’t taste at all of limes. My home made version on the other hand is always delish.

NoProblem123 · 10/05/2021 00:01

Completely agree with the Oreo comment / tasteless nothingless.

And most veggie burgers - better off putting the cardboard box of the meaty ones on your bun.

Lupinhere37 · 10/05/2021 00:02

Goodness; I really thought it was just me who couldn’t stand Hershey’s. I also can’t stand Cadbury’s these days, either.
Don’t get me started on Quorn. Thought I had norovirus, the after affects were so bad. Hideous stuff and tastes vile.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/05/2021 00:06

I had that with seaweed thins. I expected there to be a bit more that was interesting about them!

And I had the same experience with Turkish delight as a pp after Narnia stories!

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 10/05/2021 00:10

When I tried Hershey’s I thought it smelled like diarrhoea. Foul stuff.

Agree with most other things on here too! I remember biting into a delicious looking piece of focaccia or some posh type of bread thinking it would be feta or some mild type of cheese, only to get a mouthful of goat cheese. I honestly nearly threw up on the hosts’ dining table. Was gagging and desperately looking around for something to spit it in!

And I’ve had so many disappointing cakes over the years, but tonight I tried a chocolate and hazelnut cannoli with my pizza takeaway, expecting some delicious crispy creamy confection. Hard crusty shells filled with pure Nutella. Even DD (she of the 1kg a month hot chocolate habit!) had to throw it away as it was “a bit much”.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 10/05/2021 00:14

Not a fan of all the new age meat substitutes. There are amazing original vegan foods with wonderful taste and smell so why the concept of an alternative pretend product? Why not celebrate the best of vegan foods itself and not vegan “meat” substitutes? I really don’t understand the concept of vegan steak, burgers etc. Beyond silly and different concept from gluten or alcohol free niche alternatives. Vegetarian meat substitutes rarely taste as fulfilling as the original!

Waitwhat23 · 10/05/2021 00:20

Agree with a pp about 'proper' mozarella. It's the most horrible texture - slimy and a bit like the white of an egg that hasn't been properly cooked. Cheap mozarella is much nicer!

The best way to do S'mores at home is Chocolate Hob Nobs and melted marshmallows.

I used to hate blueberries but discovered the best ones are the little hard ones which you wouldn't think are ripe - they've got all the flavour. The big squishy ones taste like lightly fragranced cotton wool.

Tillygetsit · 10/05/2021 00:23

@CityCommuter I had a job where I had to bathe in Hershey's chocolate and pretend to enjoy it. Urgh that vile smell! Tastes grim and smells worse.

Dutchesss · 10/05/2021 00:27

ClovesEnvy
And I second Hersheys, it left me with a headache!

MuddySocks · 10/05/2021 00:29

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

A Waitrose cauliflower curry. It tasted like somebody else's burp.

This made me roar 😂
