Cutting grass at 8:30 on Sunday morning?

As a one off, because we have a bouncy castle coming, we are cutting the grass at 8:30 on a Sunday morning. Next door have just shouted out of their window. 🙈
AIBU? It’s not something we have ever done before or plan to repeat. I kind of think one off things you suck it up a bit? Same as the odd occasion their dog is barking outside my bedroom window at 11pm.

If the OP is in England then odds are it was raining yesterday, so no they couldn't.

Well before the day of the bouncy cancel arriving anyway. If you've ordered a bouncy castle it's reasonable to think you'd check the weather forecast and prep the garden.

Well the neighbour will know it’s a one off if it hasn’t happened regularly before surely

They didn't know OP wasn't going to start mowing the lawn at 8:30 am on Sundays.

There are people on here who are up at that time but there are likely to be people who are not so you should assume certain hours are out of bounds for unnecessary noise IMHO eg after 9 at night and before 9 on a weekday morning, maybe later on weekends / Sundays.

RickJames · 09/05/2021 08:46

I live in Germany, here your neighbours would have called the Police who would come round, order you to stop and fine you Grin

I think that's a bit extreme but I appreciate that it stops people making a racket every Sunday (just because they've got some special and exceptional reason to upset the neighbourhood.)

I'd expect further dirty looks when the neighbours see the castle going up and realise that the peace will be shattered with the screams of excited children all afternoon.

ThatIsMyPotato · 09/05/2021 08:47

You could have warned them. And mentioned the bouncy castle too. I think 9 would have just about been OK on a Sunday.

ThatIsMyPotato · 09/05/2021 08:48

I usually wait until 10 for loud noises like that as I like my neighbours

nicenicenice · 09/05/2021 08:48

If anyone yelled out of a window at me I would get up and do it every single Sunday!

CallmeHendricks · 09/05/2021 08:49

Well I've just been reminded of this time last year on our extra jubilee bank holiday, when next door's builder started work right outside my bedroom window at 5 to 6 in the morning.
I'd have dreamt of 8.30 back then.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/05/2021 08:50

What time is the bouncy castle coming?

Surely the grass was too wet to cut if you have had rain like we have had in the last few days

traumatisednoodle · 09/05/2021 08:50

To the person enjoying a lie in after a busy week, a late night or a night shift, it's a big disappointment.

If you've been om a nightshift then noise between 11 and 4/5 is the worst can't really complain at that time though....

I think 8:30 is about as early as you can get away with.

DeathAndTaxis · 09/05/2021 08:50

I'm afraid I think that's really inconsiderate. I wouldn't do anything loud in the garden before 10am, and I'd notice of any of my neighbours did.

Lorw · 09/05/2021 08:51

If they are complaining about you cutting grass then they aren’t going to be too impressed with the noisy bouncy castle 😂

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 09/05/2021 08:52

Way too early on Sunday!!
I live on a road, where none of us would dream of getting the mower out until late morning on a Sunday - thank god!

JustMeAndWheatley · 09/05/2021 08:53

Not before 10 on a Sunday unless you have warned them and know that all neighbours in earshot will be up and about by that time.

Bayleaf25 · 09/05/2021 08:53

I wouldn’t have, but I get on with neighbours and wouldn’t want them to do that to us so am judging by my own internal rules I guess.

JustMeAndWheatley · 09/05/2021 08:54

I’d be inclined to go round and apologise later, perhaps taking wine or cake.

cupsofcoffee · 09/05/2021 08:56

I don't think it's a problem but if that's how your neighbours have reacted, I suspect you're about to hugely piss them off with your bouncy castle Wink

NSA2103 · 09/05/2021 08:58

Marginal for me, probably 9.00 is safer.

agreatmistake · 09/05/2021 08:58

I think this is one of those cases where you've assumed everyone else has kids and is awake by 6am anyway, so 8.30am is really late.

Most people without kids are enjoying a lie in at 8.30am on Sunday.

OverByYer · 09/05/2021 09:00

YANBU 8.30 isn’t that early.
If I was having a lie in I may be irritated but not enough to shout about it.

Etinox · 09/05/2021 09:02

It wasn’t dry enough to mow here til 7.30 yesterday- we debated doing it then amd decided not to because of baby toddler neighbours. It’s now glorious and someone is using a hand mower, very quiet and I suspect the rest of us are eying the sky and 🤞 it stays dry...
Joys of living will in suburgatory. If it’s for a child’s birthday can you take some cake round later and explain it was a one off? Good neighbourly relations are worth nurturing.

Sillysop92 · 09/05/2021 09:03

8.30 is ok, I’m usually out of the House by then on a dog walk. It was raining most of yesterday so almost impossible to mow. He’ll get over it.

WildfirePonie · 09/05/2021 09:04

Did you start earlier? Your OP time stamp is 08:31

Morechocmorechoc · 09/05/2021 09:07

My neighbour just woke me up the same way. I've been up with 2 ill kids all week and it was my one chance to sleep. I'm too exhausted to function. So it may seem harmless but to some it ruins their whole week.

CheeseAndHackers · 09/05/2021 09:07

Considering how far noise travels I suspect it's not just one neighbour you've pissed off. YABU.

DoodleLovin · 09/05/2021 09:08

I’d be annoyed. 8.30 is early on a non-work day. You could’ve cut your grass yesterday or during the week 🤷🏻‍♀️

SnoopCatz · 09/05/2021 09:12

Too early for Sunday, but won't compare to the generator and screaming kids later. At least you can now shout out of the window at the neighbours dog.
